You can keep Joan Rivers and the others who normally line up on a red carpet to interview stars, as last night’s BAFTAs had Miss Piggy! Now her pre-show interviews with the likes of Jon Hamm, Gary Oldman, Michael Fassbender and Daniel Radcliffe on online, and you can watch them here.
Christopher Plummer Continues Awards Run At The BAFTAs
After weeks of waiting, the stars gathered at London’s Royal Opera House for the annual BAFTA film awards, with all eyes on leading contenders The Artist and Tinker Tailor to see which would walk off with the most gongs.
On the LGBT front, Christopher Plummer didn’t disappoint, winning Best Supporting Actor for playing an aging gay man in Beginners. There were also a couple of gongs for The Help, helmed by gay director Tate Taylor.
In the end it was The Artist that had the most to celebrate though, walking off with seven awards, including biggies such as Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Jean Dujardin, ensuring the movie is now in prime position to match that feat at the Oscars in two weeks time.
Tinker Tailor didn’t completely lose out though, as it picked up Outstanding British Film and Best Adapted Screenplay. Other major prizes went to Meryl Streep for Best Actress and Octavia Spencer for Best Supporting Actress. There were also a couple of awards for Senna, and Paddy Considine celebrated picking up Outstanding Debut For A British Writer, Director Or Producer.
John Hurt, who’s no strange to playing gay in the like of The Naked Civil Servant and Love & Death On Long Island, was given a much-deserved honorary award for Outstanding Contribution To British Cinema. BAFTA’s highest honour, the Fellowship, was handed to Martin Scorsese, who impressed with a speech that was pretty much a love letter to British cinema.
It was a good night with many deserving winners, although some will once more be upset about Drive being shut out. Take a look below for all the winners, and it’s now only two weeks until Christopher Plummer wins at the Oscars (fingers crossed).

Cloudburst To Open 26th London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival
It’s not too long now until the 26th BFI London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival opens on March 23rd (running until April 1st), and now the first element of what promises to be a very interesting programme has been announced, with the news the Opening Night movie will be Cloudburst.
The film stars a pair of Oscar winners – Olympia Dukakis (Moonstruck) and Brenda Fricker (My Left Foot) – as septuagenarian lesbian lovers Stella and Dottie. It’s an interesting subject, as the older generation of gay people has largely been ignored, with rare exceptions such as the recent Beginners. However as those who came of age after Stonewall start to reach pensionable age, it may well be a subject we see addressed more and more.
According to the BFI, ‘This very funny film shows older women in love and deals with some of the harsh realities of ageing with wit, humour and a great deal of affection. Following their nursing home break out, Stella (Dukakis) and Dottie (Fricker) flee their hometown in Maine and head to Canada to get married, picking up an ally along the way in this most unlikely of road movies.’
It marks the third time director Thom Fitzgerald has helmed a film that’s opened the festival, as The Hanging Garden did so in 1998 and The Event was the opener in 2004. It’s a triple whammy no other filmmaker has matched. He commented, “I’m thrilled and tickled that the BFI has chosen Cloudburst to open its 26th London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. To me, the BFI is more than a national treasure; it’s a cultural icon of worldwide significance. It represents the best in film exhibition and preservation. I deeply appreciate its programmes.”
We’ll find out the full programme for the LLGFF on February 23rd, but they’ve certainly picked an interesting opener.

I was seven-years-old when the original Star Wars movie came out, but for some reason after watching the first trilogy, I missed Phantom Menace on the big screen (I think I was off my tits at Mardi Gras in Sydney) and just never bothered to see the subsequent films. So I was really excited to be invited to the 3D theatrical re-release of the 1992 prequel, which is set 32 years BBY (before the battle of Yarvin)

This Means War Nine-Minute Preview
Studios know that at the moment it’s an uphill struggle to sell movies that aren’t a sequel or based on a known property. As a result Fox is really pushing This Means War, with things like Valentine’s Sneak Peaks and now a nine-minute preview popping up online, so you can get a really good feel for the movie, which stars Tom Hardy, Chris Pine and Reese Witherspoon. Here’s the synopsis: ‘The world’s deadliest CIA operatives are inseparable partners and best friends until they fall for the same woman. Having once helped bring down entire enemy nations, they are now employing their incomparable skills and an endless array of high-tech gadgetry against their greatest nemesis ever – each other.’ It hits cinemas March 2nd, when we’ll find out if audiences respond to Fox’s efforts to get people excited about the film.
The Bourne Legacy Trailer
Matt Damon may be gone, but the Bourne franchise lives on with Jeremy Renner taking over as a new agent who came out of the same program as Jason Bourne. Now the first trailer for the movie has arrived, and to be honest it doesn’t reveal a huge amount about the movie, except that Edward Norton’s going to try and brainwash Jeremy Renner, and that ‘Jason Bourne was just the tip of the iceberg’. Robert Pattinson Tries To Seduce Us In Bel Ami Poster
On March 9th Robert Pattinson is setting out to work his way up Parisian society via the beds of wealthy and well-connected women! Well, his character in Bel Ami is anyway, and now he trying to seduce us to watch the movie via a brand new quad poster that’s just been released.

Weekend Wins Best Screenplay At Evening Standard British Film Awards
Although the BAFTAs completely ignored it in favour of more commercial but often far less worthy fare, thankfully gay Brit-flick hit Weekend has been getting its dues at the likes of the British Independent Film Awards and the London Critics Circle Film Awards. The latest to honour the movie is the Evening Standard British Film Awards, which last night gave Weekend writer/director Andrew Haigh the Best Screenplay gong.
Andrew attended the ceremony alongside the film’s producer Tristan Goligher and Cinematographer Ula Pontikos. Andrew described the win as “amazing and unexpected; this past year has just been incredible. I just want to thank the actors, Tom [Cullen] and Chris [New], who really brought so much to the script and I share this with them.”
Haigh also won the British Breakthrough Filmmaker award at last month’s London Film Critics’ Circle Awards and the film won two British Independent Film Awards, for Achievement In Production and Most Promising Newcomer for actor Tom Cullen.
Weekend follows the relationship between Russell (Cullen) and Glen (New), over the course of a weekend. On a Friday night after hanging out with his straight mates, Russell heads out to a nightclub, alone and on the pull. Just before closing time he picks up Glen. Over the next 48 hours, Russell and Glen become inseparable, gradually forming a tight bond that neither of them could have predicted – one that may change their lives forever. The film has currently grossed over £200,000 at the UK box office and will be released on Blu-ray and DVD in Britain on March 19th, 2012.
Aside from Weekend, other more than worthy Evening Standard British Film Award winners include the Best Actor going to Michael Fassbender for Shame & Jane Eyre, and Olivia Colman getting Best Actress for her astonishing performance in Tyrannosaur.
New Amazing Spider-man Trailer Arrives
Director Marc Webb is keen to sell The Amazing Spider-man as ‘untold stories’ about the superhero rather than a remake of the Sam Raimi series, but the more we see, the more it looks like a very different beast to when Tobey Maguire was behind the mask. For a start it’s getting back to the wisecracking Peter Parker rather than the po-faced one of Raimi. Now a new trailer is letting us have our best look yet at the film, introducing us more to the story and action, as well as giving us our first look at the villainous Lizard. It certainly looks like it’s gonna be spectacular! The movie hits cinemas July 3rd.
