Akira Finally Gets The Greenlight

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

If everything had gone to plan, we’d have been watching Akira in cinemas last summer. However while Warner bought the rights in 2008 and put a remake of the manga/anime on the fast track, various problems – from ever-changing directors to difficulty finding actors for the lead roles – has meant that it’s only now that it’s getting the greenlight. Indeed, there have been a couple time where it appeared the whole thing had been cancelled, so it’s almost surprising Warner has given it the thumbs up.

It appears the reason it’s definitely going ahead is that plans for a  $150 million movie featuring at least one hugely expensive a-list star have been scaled back to a $90 million film (but with room left open for more Akira is this one is a success) featuring up and comers. Variety reports that Warner wants to start shooting in late February/early March 2012, with Unknown and Orphan helmer Jaume Collet-Sera directing.

At the moment there are no actors attached, but TRON: Legacy star Garrett Hedlund is the front runner for the lead role of Kaneda.

Harry Potter writer Steve Kloves has been working on the screenplay, with the film moving the action from Tokyo to a futuristic Manhattan. Biker Kaneda tries to save his friend Tetsuo, who’s involved in a secret government project, which involves bringing out someone’s latent psychokinetic powers.

River Phoenix’s Final Film Getting Released

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Better late than never, I suppose. THR reports that director George Sluizer finally plans to finish his dramatic thriller Dark Blood, some 18 years after production was halted 11 days before the end of shooting, due to the sudden and unexpected death of the movie’s leading man, River Phoenix.

The actor was shooting Dark Blood in 1993 when he died of a heart attack (brought on by taking a cocktail of drugs) on Halloween night outside the Viper Room nightclub in LA. Shortly after the incident happened, George Sluizer hid the footage away, fearing that the film would be destroyed. He has now decided that enough time has passed and so he’s pulled the footage out of storage and re-edited it. He believes that he will be able to deliver a final cut of the film with a few tweaks and adjustments, as well as a new voice-over to cover the holes. Sluizer plans to have Joaquin Phoenix record the voice-over, as he believes the two brothers sound alike. The director has stayed in contact with the Phoenix family ever since the death of River Phoenix. That said, it isn’t known if Joaquin will go along with Sluizer’s plans.

Dark Blood revolves around River Phoenix’s character, a hermit who lives on a nuclear test site awaiting what he sees as the inevitable end of the world. A famous Hollywood couple seeks out the site for shelter, and River Phoenix’s character ends up having an affair with the woman.

The title of the film may have to be changed due to a copyright claim, but Sluizer hopes to have the film in theatres next year.

Bad Teacher Team Reunite For New Comedy

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Bad Teacher turned out to be one of the bigger comedy successes of the summer, grossing over $200 million worldwide on a budget of only $20 million. It seems director Jake Kasdan is hoping he can strike it lucky again by reteaming with Bad Teacher screenwriters Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg for a new untitled comedy at Sony Pictures.

According to Deadline, the movie is about the manager of a budget hairdresser, who convinces his best friend to break up with his fiancée. He then unexpectedly falls for the ex-fiancée, and begins trying to juggle his friendship and budding new relationship. Oh great, yet another comedy about an asshole, who we’re supposed to find funny.

Stupnitsky and Eisenberg are also said to have been trying put together a Bad Teacher sequel, although nothing has materialized so far.

Six Minutes of Dark Knight Rises Coming December?

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Fancy seeing six minutes of The Dark Knight Rises this December, rather than having to wait until its July 20th, 2012 release? Well, while Warner isn’t saying anything, it appeared a large chunk of Batman 3 footage will be attached to IMAX prints of Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol.

If this turns out to be true, it would seem a slightly a odd move for Warner Bros., as it’ll mean they’re attaching a highly-anticipated prologue to a Paramount Pictures movie, and therefore helping a competitor. However, Warner doesn’t have any IMAX titles slated for release around Christmas, and Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol will likely skew towards the same audience of The Dark Knight Rises. Plus, to get maximum eyeballs on The Dark Knight Rises footage, in the US the new Mission: Impossible opens in IMAX cinemas on December 16, five days ahead of its general wide release on December 21.

Warner Bros. employed a similar tactic in December 2007, when it attached the opening minutes of The Dark Knight to prints of I Am Legend. Whether this footage will also be attached to UK Mission: Impossible IMAX prints isn’t known, but we’d expect it will be.

Mark Romanek Favourite For Lost Symbol

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

A few months ago Ron Howard decided that after The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons he was done with Professor Robert Langdon and wouldn’t direct The Lost Symbol, the adaptation of the third novel in Dan Brown’s book series. Now it appears Sony Pictures is eyeing Howard’s replacement and wants Never Let Me Go director Mark Romanek, according to Deadline.

Dan Brown himself is currently rewriting the screenplay, working off a first draft by Steven Knight (Eastern Promises). The book brings Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) back to America, where he investigates the death of his mentor, which involves delving into the world of the mysterious Freemasons and the signs and symbols supposedly built into some of Washington DC’s most iconic buildings.

Mark Romanek isn’t officially locked in as the director yet, although negotiations are said to begin very shortly. Tom Hanks is expected to return as Robert Langdon, but his deal has not been completed yet either. Ron Howard will stay on board as a producer of The Lost Symbol, alongside Brian Grazer. It isn’t known when shooting might start.

Channing Tatum May Be A Foxcatcher

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

For several years, Capote director Bennett Miller has been working on the movie Foxcatcher, but he got rather sidelined making Moneyball. Now that movie is out of the way, he’s back on Foxcatcher and recently attached Steve Carell to the lead role. Now the LA Times reports that Channing Tatum may be joining him in the movie. No deal has been signed as yet, but Tatum is apparently in talks.

Based on a true story Carell will play John Du Pont, heir to the Du Pont family, who was convicted of murdering his friend, Olympic Gold Medal winning wrestler, David Schultz – the role that Channing Tatum is up for. No motive was ever established, which may be because Du Pont was diagnosed with schizophrenia, so it was all in his own head. After the shooting, Du Pont then holed himself up in his mansion for two days while negotiating with the police. Indeed it’s the mansion and farm that give the movie its name, suggesting the film will concentrate on this bit of the multimillionaire’s life.

Miller is currently getting the final pieces of financing sorted for the film, with the hope he’ll be able to start shooting early next year.

Guy Ritchie Races To Cannonball Run Remake

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

There’s little doubt that ever since the credit crunch, Hollywood has been looking at all sorts of different ways of funding movies. While product placement has been popular for a long time, it seems they’re going to try and take things a little further with a remake of The Cannonball Run, by attempting to get General Motors to actually put up an extensive financial stake in the film.

Vulture reports that to make the whole thing more attractive to GM, Warner Bros is currently considering Guy Ritchie or Shawn Levy to direct the remake. It is said that Guy Ritchie wants Brad Pitt to star, while Shawn Levy is eyeing the project for Ben Stiller to take the wheel. Ritchie apparently has the inside track on Shawn Levy at the moment, since both Ritchie and Pitt are repped by Creative Artists Agency, GM’s corporate agency, which should make it easier to pull things together.

If the Warner Bros./GM deal goes through, The Cannonball Run remake could showcase the car company’s new line, in much bigger ways than a normal product placement deal would allow for. It’s an interesting idea, but hopefully GM don’t mind their motors being destroyed, which was half the fun of the original Cannonball Run.

The 1981 movie starred Burt Reynolds, Roger Moore, Farrah Fawcett, Dom DeLuise, Dean Martin, and focused on a cross-country road race with outlaw drivers doing anything it takes to win.

Zwart Water Gets Charlize Theron

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

We’re presuming that by the time it reaches cinemas, it’ll have a slightly more zingy title than Zwart Water (Black Water – which is the name of the Dutch Thriller it’s based on), but THR reports Charlize Theron has signed on to star in the Hollywood remake of the movie, with Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Day the Earth Stood Still) directing.

The original Zwart Water, which was released last year, is about a nine-year-old girl who discovers her new friend may actually be the ghost of her mother’s dead twin. Charlize Theron will portray the mom in the remake, who is slightly unhinged and may be hiding a terrible secret.

It isn’t known when the film will go into production.

Nic Cage Is A Black Butterfly

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Nicolas Cage is a man who marches to the beat of his own drummer, which has resulted in some great film and an awful lot of dreck. We’ll have to wait and see which end of that spectrum Black Butterfly ends up on, but THR reports that Cage has signed up to star in the movie, marking German production company Bavariapool’s first English-language production.

Cage will portray Paul, a reclusive author who becomes friends with a shady drifter, a relationship that ends up having fatal consequences. German actress Veronica Ferres (Adam Resurrected) will also star in an unknown role.

Brian Goodman (What Doesn’t Kill You) will direct Black Butterfly, which is based on the French TV movie, Papillon Noir. In that, ex-footballer Eric Cantona starred as the drifter, Jack, while Stéphane Freiss played the author, Richard. Production is scheduled to begin in early 2012 in eastern Germany.

Anne Hathaway Signs On For Les Mis

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

A few weeks ago we reported on rumours that Anne Hathaway was being sought for the movie version of Les Miserables at the request of Hugh Jackman, who’s onboard to play Jean Valjean. Now Deadline reports Hathaway has signed up for the movie, to portray Fantine.

Based on the Victor Hugo novel, Les Miserables centres on Jean Valjean, a prisoner who is on the run, with a dogged policeman named Javert (Russell Crowe) spending years tracking him down during the French Revolution. Fantine meanwhile is an unwed mother whose life has become dedicated to providing for her child, but whose situation gets ever worse as she tries to do just that, and whose story becomes intertwined with that of Valjean. She’s also the character who gets to sing I Dreamed A Dream, which of course was turned into a hit by Susan Boyle.

Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) is directing Les Miserables from a screenplay by William Nicholson. Shooting is expected to start in the next few months, with Jackman making Les Mis before he goes to work on The Wolverine.

Reese & Wernick Writing Micronauts

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

After Zombieland, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick became one of the most in-demand screenwriting teams in Hollywood, with the likes of GI Joe 2 and Deadpool handed to them. Now they’ve got another high concept idea to deal with, as Deadline reports that they’ve been hired to write Micronauts.

A film version has been mooted for nearly two years, when J.J. Abrams came aboard to produce. Micronauts were known as MicroMen when they were first launched by the Japanese toy company Takara in 1974. The Micronauts also appeared in a Marvel comic book in 1979, although it’s unlikely they’ll use too much of the outlandish fantasy storyline of that series. The toys are now owned by Hasbro, which sees a movie version as a priority, partly to help them relaunch the line.

The robot vehicles/toys are designed to be interconnective so you can put them together in various different combinations. The whole thing is a little Transformers-esque, except these robots are very small and come from a miniature alternate universe.

There’s no news on when we might see the film, but Hasbro is apparently very keen to get it up and running as soon as possible.
