Universal’s Monster Movies Sign Johnny Depp As The Invisible Man

February 10, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

johnny-depp

While Marvel and DC haven’t generally felt the need to cast massive a-list stars as the leads for their interconnected universe of films (even Robert Downey Jr was on the b-list before Iron Man), it seems Universal thinks they need some real star power for the series of monster movies they’re planning. Tom Cruise is attached to a reboot of The Mummy, and now THR reports Johnny Depp is attached to play The Invisible Man.

Ed Solomon (Men in Black, Now You See Me) is writing the script for the film, with Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan overseeing the creation of the universe, which is also likely to include new takes on Dracula and Frankenstein. Over than that there’s very little info on what they plan to do with HG Wells’ classic story.

It’s previously been suggested The Mummy will be set in the present day, so there’s a good chance The Invisible Man will be brought into the modern era too. Universal’s classic 1933 version starred Claude Rains as a scientist who takes an experimental drug and becomes completely invisible. Presumably the new take will follow the same basic set-up.There’s no word on a director or release date.

Charlize Theron In Talks To Be Fast & Furious 8’s Villain

February 10, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

charlize-theron

Charlize Theron showed off her action credentials last year in the excellent Mad Max: Fury Road, and now she may be heading for another franchise full of revving engines and explosions, as Variety reports that Universal has offered her the role of the villain in Fast & Furious 8. However if she does take the role, there’s little info on who she’d be playing.

We do know it will be a ‘new villain’, which suggests she won’t be connected to the Shaw family, who caused so much trouble in the last two movies in the form of Luke Evans and Jason Statham. Although there’s always a chance they’ve got a sister.

Whatever she’s up to, it will inevitably involve the likes of Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, and Chris “Ludacris” Bridges getting into some souped up vehicles and letting rip. F. Gary Gray is due to direct the movie, which is due out April 2017.

Apropos Of Nothing: British Canoeist Matthew James Lister May Be The Perfect, Furry, Nearly Naked Guy

February 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

matthew-james-lister-pic5-slideSometimes you see pictures of a guy that are so hot they’re literally awe-inspiring. I have to see that’s how I felt when my eyes first saw the shots below of British canoe athlete Matthew James Lister, who is pretty much the perfect specimen of manhood.

Fit, furry, handsome and looking extremely good in just a Speedo, what is there not to like? Even better, Lister is openly gay, and following his career with Team GB he’s become a British Athletes Commission LGB Athlete Ambassador and a Stonewall LGBT Rolemodel.

The pics were taken by London-based photographer Lee Faircloth for Summer Diary Project’s feature story, The Rapids. Quite why Lister hasn’t been in hundreds of photoshoots before is a complete mystery!

Take a look at some of the pics below and be prepared to swoon.

Ryan Reynolds Would Quite Like Deadpool To Get A Boyfriend

February 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

deadpool-slide

In the run up to the release of Deadpool, those involved in making it have been keen to say that the character would retain the pansexuality he had in the comics. However, it didn’t surprise many to hear that this wouldn’t mean Ryan Reynolds would be bedding guys in the movie, and that instead it would rely on the Hollywood standby of suggesting he’d be happy with any gender, while only showing him with a girl (Morena Baccarin).

Reynolds is keen to let the world know though that he’s not the roadblock to showing a more diverse sexuality for the sarcastic superhero. Variety reports that on the red carpet of the film’s New York premiere, he said of Deadpool’s pansexuality, “I love that about Deadpool. I love that he can break any boundary. In the future, I hope we get to do that more.”

Reading between the lines you get the impression he’d have quite liked to have gone further with this movie, which instead restricts its hints to things such as Deadpool mentioning the idea of having a fling with Wolverine, or being open to experimentation during an otherwise straight sex montage.

As for the character ever having a boyfriend, Reynold thinks that would be ‘nice’, adding, “I certainly wouldn’t be the guy standing in the way of that. That would be great.”

Screenwriter Rhett Reese also had a few things to say about it, adding, “We knew that was part of the comics. We wanted to honor that in the movie. But we did it in subtle ways.”

Producer Simon Kinberg meanwhile added, “There’s veiled references to it in this film. It’s in the DNA of the character.”

So why is the film so reticent to show Deadpool being pansexual rather than just hinting he doesn’t only like girls? The suggestion many have put forward is that Fox already thought it was taking a risk with a wisecracking, foul-mouthed, violent, R-rated superhero movie with sexual content, and that adding anything too ‘gay’ would have been a step too far. Big movies like this are still reliant on foreign box office, and with many countries still very homophobic (and with some still liable to ban a film if it has same sex content), there’s a fear in Hollywood that that ‘gay stuff’ will dent the global box office. Indeed, some in Hollywood aren’t even worried about foreign box office, as they have concerns, whether valid or not, that large swatches of the US population won’t show up if they think it’s going to be too ‘gay’.

If Deadpool is a success, it may encourage the studio behind it to be a little bolder with a sequel once they know it’s definitely got an audience, especially as those involved in making it seem happy to do so. However at the moment it’s going to be extremely difficult to break entrenched attitudes amongst studio executives, meaning that even minor queer characters in blockbuster-type movies are still exceptionally rare, and showing them actually doing something that isn’t straight is almost unheard of.

It’s All A Bit Where’s Wally In A Quartet Of Posters For Pixar’s Finding Dory

February 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

finding-dory-poster1-slideSomeone in the Disney/Pixar marketing department has decided to take the title ‘Finding Dory’ very literally, with four new posters invite us to look for the Blue Tang, who’s hidden somewhere in the ocean. However, it’s certainly a good way of showing us that this will be new but still taking us to a familiar Finding Nemo world.

Here’s the short synopsis: ‘Disney•Pixar’s “Finding Dory” reunites everyone’s favorite forgetful blue tang, Dory, with her friends Nemo and Marlin on a search for answers about her past. What can she remember? Who are her parents? And where did she learn to speak Whale?’

The movie will in in cinemas this summer. You can take a look at the teaser trailer by clicking here, and have a gander at the new poster below.

High-Rise Trailer – Tom Hiddleston gets naked in a retro-futuristic apartment building

February 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

high-rise-trailer-slideHigh-Rise got slightly mixed reports at its film festival screenings (although some people absolutely adored it), but there’s no doubt it looks like a really interesting movie – and everyone who’s seen it has praised its ambition and visual style. That style is certainly on show in the new trailer for the movie, which you can watch below.

Some of you will also be pleased to know that the trailer gives us a look at a bit of near nudity from Tom Hiddleston, who seems to have a thing for naked sunbathing in the movie.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘1975. Two miles west of London, Dr. Robert Laing moves into his new apartment seeking soulless anonymity, only to find that the building’s residents have no intention of leaving him alone. Resigned to the complex social dynamics unfolding around him, Laing bites the bullet and becomes neighbourly. As he struggles to establish his position, Laing’s good manners and sanity disintegrate along with the building. The lights go out and the lifts fail but the party goes on. People are the problem. Booze is the currency. Sex is the panacea. Only much later, as he sits on his balcony eating the architect’s dog, does Dr. Robert Laing finally feel at home…..’

Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller, Luke Evans and Elisabeth Moss star, with Ben Wheatley directing this adaptation of JG Ballard’s novel. High-Rise arrives in UK cinemas on 18th March.

Lupita Nyong’o May Team With Selma Director Ava DuVernay For Intelligent Life

February 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lupita-nyongo

It looks like Selma director Ava DuVernay may soon be a very busy woman, as Deadline reports that she’s being courted for both Disney’s A Wrinkle In Time and Colin Trevorrow’s Intelligent Life. And if she takes the latter, she may already have a star, as it’s suggested Lupita Nyong’o is in talks for the movie.

Until recently it looked like Jurassic World’s Trevorrow was going to direct Intelligent Life himself, but now he’s looking to pass the reins and is likely to offer the job to DeVernay very soon. The movie is about a UN worker in a department designed to represent mankind if there was ever contact with aliens, who falls for a mystery woman who turns out to be an alien. Nyong’o would be the alien lady.

A Wrinkle In Time meanwhile is based on Madeleine L’Engle fantasy classic novel, about ‘a young girl whose father, a government scientist, has gone missing after working on a mysterious project called a tesseract, which involves being transported to a fifth dimension with mysterious inhabited planets.’

It’s not known whether DeVernay will have time to make both movies, or whether she’ll have to pick one over the other.

Keira Knightley May Join Will Smith In Collateral Beauty

February 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

keira-knightley

Last June Hugh Jackman signed up to star in Collateral Beauty, with Jason Segel and Rooney Mara soon joining. However, soon Jackman was out and Will Smith was in, and now it appears there’s been another casting shift, as THR reports Keira Knightley is taking on the role it seems was previously filled by Rooney Mara.

The film is about a New York advertising executive (Smith) who experiences a deep personal tragedy. When his colleagues devise an unconventional plan to break him out of his depression, the plan works, but not in a way that anyone imagined. The likes of Helen Mirren, Ed Norton, Michael Pena and Naomie Harris are also attached to star.

THR adds that ‘One of the movie’s conceit concerns actors playing walking embodiments of Love, Time, and Death. Knightley would play Love’.

The movie starts shooting in the next couple of weeks in New York City, with David Frankel directing from a script by Allan Loeb. A December 2016 US release is already set, which suggests they’re already thinking this may be an awards contender.

Shawn Balentine Becomes Hollywood’s First Out Gay Stuntman

February 8, 2016 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

shawn-balentine-patton-oswaltUntil now Shawn Balentine was best known as one of those people who are important to the movies, but who we’re not supposed to notice – a stunt double. He’s stood in for the likes of Jack Black, Oliver Cooper, and Patton Oswalt when when derring-do was needed and the actors (or their insurance company) demanded it.

However Ballantine has now decided to reveal that he’s gay, becoming the first Hollywood stunt person to make such a public statement. He revealed the news in a lengthy Facebook post, saying, ‘There are so many layers that make a man, and even though I wear my heart on my sleeve, I rarely allow even my closest friends or family to see all of me. I’ve always just wanted to be Shawn the happy-go-lucky guy who never showed the vulnerability underneath. And I’ve always wanted my niece Rachel and nephews to be so damn proud to call me Uncle Shawn along with my sisters and Pops and Mom.
Now it’s time to peel back the layers. I’ve been waiting until I was ready to come out as gay man on my terms. I’m ready now.

‘This process has been painful along the way, including my Pops saying,“How and where did I go wrong? But I still love you either way, Son.” After not speaking for a while, he’s now proud to call me his son. My sister Sharol (who was killed by a drunk driver and I dedicate my sobriety to along with my niece and nephews) was always the one I confided in the most. But she’s no longer here for me physically, but her memory gives me strength. She was so strong and brave facing down lupus and raising an awesome daughter and son (who also died because of someone’s road rage, not even a mile from where my sister died). My oldest sister Peggy, with a infectious spirit for fun, raised two kick-butt sons and showed me how to see the good things in life. And through all this, my moms, whose sick right now, has been there for me.

‘I know I could lose friendships over this and work too. In the world where I work as a Stuntman/Stunt Coordinator this might be viewed as a big deal and that’s a big reason why I’ve held on to this layer for so long. I’ve been to the edge and back, praying and losing days of sleep over this decision, but if this helps even one or two out there from feeling alone, being blackmailed, or told to your face that someone doesn’t approve of your spiritual practices then I’m here for ya and have one HUGE shoulder you can lean on because I’ve been in your shoes. You will NOT go to hell or get stoned to death; which I was told just last week.

‘From this day forward I will no longer look at myself in the mirror ashamed of hiding this layer. I don’t give a damn if you like me or you don’t I’m not the kind of guy who wants to talk about being gay all the time or go marching down the street. But I need to be honest with myself and with all of you. I need to get this off my chest because this is the layer I’ve never wanted to let you know existed.

‘I have been blessed to be mentored by and learn from great instructors, coaches, sensei’s, and teachers from 4H, martial arts, the US Army, college and the professional world. My heartfelt thanks to Richard Plowden, Joe Bauer, Kathy Powers Forsythe, Walt Rodd, Jordan Ciambrone, Matt Mallen, Nicholas Daines, Ronnie Kerr, Tammie Baird, Brett Lynch, Scott G Shriner, Ed Lavelle, Peter King, Norman Howell, Neal Baer, the Amazing Patton Oswalt for allowing me to be his stunt double/doppelganger and most importantly to Marty Hornstein who always taught me to be who I am. And to all of my friends who have supported me, especially during this challenging period I give you my deepest thanks.

‘I didn’t choose to be gay; it’s simply who I am. I have been blessed to have fortitude and to not care anymore what anyone thinks. Finally, at my age, I’ve been able to expose this layer to all of you. I’m perfect just the way I am. And it feels damn fine to let see this layer of my life. Welcome friends, to knowing the real Shawn.’

Patton Oswalt has expressed his support, saying, ‘He’s a top-shelf professional stuntman and an amazing person. He’s also the first professional stuntman to come out of the closet. He wrote this smart, touching, and funny post about what’s he’s been going through and where he is now.”

‘I could not be prouder of the guy. I’d walk through fire for him. Which is fair, considering he’s walked through explosions, walls and, on BROOKLYN NINE NINE, a kiddie pool full of tomato sauce.’

Take a look at Balentine’s post below.

Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates Trailer – Zac Efron teams up with Adam Devine (and yes, takes his shirt off)

February 8, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mike-and-dave-need-wedding-dates-poster-slide2016 appears to be the year of Zac Efron comedies that don’t look all that good, but which hope to lure people in on the promise that he’s been in gym a lot of working out hard and will show us the results. We’ve already had Dirty Grandpa, and this summer will bring both Bad Neighbours 2 and Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates. The last of those now has a trailer.

And as expected, despite the presence of Efron, Adam Devine and the excellent Aubrey Plaza and Anna Kendrick, it looks a bit naff. But even the poster shows there will be Efron nipples!

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Hard-partying brothers Mike (Adam Devine) and Dave (Zac Efron) place an online ad to find the perfect dates (Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza) for their sister’s Hawaiian wedding. Hoping for a wild getaway, the boys instead find themselves outsmarted and out-partied by the uncontrollable duo.’

The movie will be in cinemas in August.

Jason Bourne First Look – Matt Damon is back kicking ass (and shirtless) as the former spy

February 8, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

jason-bourne-matt-damonIt seems the new Bourne movie is dropping the name convention of ‘The Bourne…’ and will just be called Jason Bourne, but other than that it’s business as usual. As this first look shows (which premiered during the Super Bowl), Matt Damon back in action, with plenty of action and fisticuffs. Indeed, if anything, it wants to show he’s even more badass this time around.

There’s still not too much info on the plot, but do know that it’s set in 2016, 12 years after the 2004 setting of The Bourne Ultimatum. Jason has apparently been off the grid in that time, but comes out of hiding in order to find our more about his past. Although as the First Look suggests, he already has more of his memory back – but that doesn’t mean he knows the full truth. Bourne 5 will be out this summer.

Jason Bourne will be in UK cinemas on July 19th. Watch the First Look teaser below.

New The Jungle Book Trailer – Into Disney’s live-action take on the Kipling classic

February 8, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jungle-book-full-triptych-posterWhile most studios were just dropping 30 or 40 second trailers for their upcoming movies, Disney decided to tie into the big game with a new, full trailer for their upcoming, live-action take on The Jungle Book. You can take a look at it below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Directed by Jon Favreau (“Iron Man”), based on Rudyard Kipling’s timeless stories and inspired by Disney’s classic animated film, “The Jungle Book” is an all-new live-action epic adventure about Mowgli (newcomer Neel Sethi), a man-cub who’s been raised by a family of wolves. But Mowgli finds he is no longer welcome in the jungle when fearsome tiger Shere Khan (voice of Idris Elba), who bears the scars of Man, promises to eliminate what he sees as a threat.

‘Urged to abandon the only home he’s ever known, Mowgli embarks on a captivating journey of self-discovery, guided by panther-turned-stern mentor Bagheera (voice of Ben Kingsley), and the free-spirited bear Baloo (voice of Bill Murray). Along the way, Mowgli encounters jungle creatures who don’t exactly have his best interests at heart, including Kaa (voice of Scarlett Johansson), a python whose seductive voice and gaze hypnotizes the man-cub, and the smooth-talking King Louie (voice of Christopher Walken), who tries to coerce Mowgli into giving up the secret to the elusive and deadly red flower: fire.

‘The all-star cast also includes Lupita Nyong’o as the voice of the fiercely protective mother wolf Raksha, and Giancarlo Esposito as the voice of wolf pack’s alpha male Akela. “The Jungle Book” seamlessly blends live-action with photorealistic CGI animals and environments, using up-to-the-minute technology and storytelling techniques to immerse audiences in an enchanting and lush world.

‘The wild adventure swings into cinemas in 3D, April 2016.’
