Trans Director Lana Wachowski Turns Model For Marc Jacobs

January 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lana-wachowski-marc-jacobsThere aren’t many movie directors who’ve ended up gracing the catwalks or becoming one of the faces for a designer’s new season of clothing, however now The Matrix and Cloud Atlas’s Lana Wachowski can add model to her resume, as she is helping to front Marc Jacobs’ new Spring/Summer 2016 ready-to-wear collection.

The designer comments of the decision to hire the trans director, ‘The spectrum of individuals photographed in our Spring/Summer 2016 ad campaign represent a celebration of my America. In collaboration with photographer David Sims and stylist Katie Grand, the people featured in our campaign personify this collection of fashion through their individuality. Collectively, they embody and celebrate the spirit and beauty of equality.

He adds, ‘I was first introduced to Lana via YouTube in December 2012. The speech Lana gave to accept the Human Rights Campaign, Visibility Award, (October 20, 2012) was utterly profound in its script and her articulate, brilliant and timeless delivery. She expressed thoughts and ideas that have filled my head and heart always but had never been so eloquently captured in language that was so tangible, intelligent, poignant and full of possibility. I found myself referencing Lana’s words in my daily life and sharing her speech with close friends.

‘In the days before our Spring/Summer ’16 fashion show and through a fateful series of communications, much to my incomprehensible delight, Lana accepted an invitation to our show in New York City and thus I took her, “fashion show virginity”. Lana’s ineffable beauty captured by David in this portrait reminds me of the personal sentiment she shared with me about, “learning you can make important friends at anytime in your life”.’ [Read more…]

Hunger Games Actress Amandla Stenberg Reveals That She Is Bisexual

January 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

amandla-stenbergIt’s not too many year ago when the idea of coming out at the beginning of your acting career would have been seen as almost inevitably career killing. However now more and more young actors are feeling the ability to be open about their sexuality, and that includes Amandla Stenberg, who revealed she is Bisexual during a Snapchat takeover for Teen Vogue.

Stenberg is perhaps best known for playing the pivotal Rue in The Hunger Games, and has also been seen in the likes of Colobiana, Sleepy Hollow and most recently Mr Robinson. At the end of the Snapchat session, Stenberg said, “It’s a really, really hard thing to be silenced and it’s deeply bruising to fight against your identity and to mold yourself into shapes that you just shouldn’t be in.

“As someone who identifies as a black bisexual woman, I’ve been through it, and it hurts, and it’s awkward and it’s uncomfortable, but then I realized because of Solange and Ava Duvernay and Willow and all the black girls watching this right now, there is absolutely nothing to change. We cannot be suppressed. We are meant to express our joy and our love and our tears and be big and bold and definitely not easy to swallow.”

She adds that problems with diversity and representation need to be fought against, “And not just women of color. Bisexual women, gay women, transgender women, mentally ill women – I am sick of all the misogyny and homopobia and transphobia I see around me and I know you are, too.”

You can take a look at Stenberg’s comments, via her Tumblr, below. [Read more…]

Aaron Sorkin Planning Molly’s Game As His Directorial Debut

January 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

aaron-sorkin

Although he’s a bit of a love him or loath him figure to some, Aaron Sorkin has made an incredible name for himself as a screenwriter (Jobs, The Social Network) and on TV (The West Wing, The Newsroom), but it’s only now that he’s planning to turn director. Variety reports that Sorkin is teeing-up Molly’s Game as his directorial debut.

He’s actually been involved in a film version of Molly Bloom’s memoir for over a year, as he signed up to write the screenplay in November 2014. Now though he’s hoping to direct as well, with Danny Boyle having vacated the director’s chair.

Molly’s Game is set in the world of high-stakes poker, with the story following Bloom who ‘was a top-tier skier who headed to Los Angeles after not qualifying for the Olympics and became an an organizer of underground poker games for Hollywood players including Ben Affleck, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire before being arrested by the FBI.’

Her downfall was getting involved (or according to her pressured) by the wrong people, including the Mafia who wanted a slice of the action after she moved from LA to New York, as well as turning what was a lucrative but legal operation into something that was classed as illegal gambling, after she started taking a cut of the pot rather than just relying on tips. It’s not known when the film about her will be released.

Colton Haynes Wants Gender Pay Equality (And Not Just For Male Models) In A New Vid

January 7, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

colton-haynes-funny-or-dieMost of the interest in Colton Haynes on the internet this week has been on whether or not he came out as gay, but the Arrow and Teen Wolf actor is keen for us to take a look at another issues – gender pay inequality. In a new Funny Or Die video, Haynes plays himself in male model made, as someone who has just discovered the massive disparity in the wages on male and female models.

In that case it turns out the top female models and paid 95% more than the top male models – and Colton is outraged. Men being paid less that women for the same work! However then he needs someone to help him learn that men earning more than women is far from the norm.

You can take a look at the humourous video below.

John Boyega Shoots Down Star Wars Gay Romance Theories

January 7, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

star-wars-poe-finn-oscar-isaac-john-boyega

Ever since Star Wars: The Force Awakens hit cinemas, a lot of people have wondered whether there was more to the relationship between Finn (John Boyega) and Poe (Oscar Isaac)  than just friendship – particularly one scene where they run towards each, which many have commented looked like they would end up kissing.

Since then the rumours have intensified, stoked by a comment Oscar Isaac (perhaps jokingly) made where he said he was playing the relationship between the two of them for romance. That’s led to speculation that in the coming movies it will develop into a real queer romance (despite pretty scant evidence that’s what’s planned).

However it looks like that isn’t where things are headed, and indeed that isn’t officially what’s going on in The Force Awakens – although perhaps it was for one of the actors. It’s John Boyega who’s shooting down the rumours, resulting in a Tweet from Shortlist’s Chris Mandle which reads ‘Sad news: John Boyega confirmed to me the Finn/Poe romance is not canon and it only exists “in Oscar’s head” :(‘

To be honest, it was always unlikely Disney was planning to make two of the main characters in Star Wars queer, at least in a way that was more than subtext. However to give you a little hope, it’s unlikely Boyega has seen the scripts for Episodes VIII and IX, so there’s always a chance the House Of Mouse has a secret up its sleeve – but don’t hold out too much hope.

Sad news: John Boyega confirmed to me the Finn/Poe romance is not canon and it only exists "in Oscar's head" 🙁

The Animals Are Here In Great New The Jungle Book Triptych Posters

January 7, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jungle-book-triptych-completeIt’s just four months until Disney hopes that turning another one of its classic movies live-action will pay off at the box office. This time it’s The Jungle Book that’s being revamped, with Jon Favreau directing and the likes of Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley, Idris Elba, Lupita Nyong’o, Scarlett Johansson, Giancarlo Esposito and Christopher Walken providing the voices of the animals.

Disney has now released a great triptych poster, which you can see above, along with its constituent parts below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Directed by Jon Favreau (“Iron Man”), based on Rudyard Kipling’s timeless stories and inspired by Disney’s classic animated film, “The Jungle Book” is an all-new live-action epic adventure about Mowgli (newcomer Neel Sethi), a man-cub who’s been raised by a family of wolves. But Mowgli finds he is no longer welcome in the jungle when fearsome tiger Shere Khan (voice of Idris Elba), who bears the scars of Man, promises to eliminate what he sees as a threat. Urged to abandon the only home he’s ever known, Mowgli embarks on a captivating journey of self-discovery, guided by panther-turned-stern mentor Bagheera (voice of Ben Kingsley), and the free-spirited bear Baloo (voice of Bill Murray). Along the way, Mowgli encounters jungle creatures who don’t exactly have his best interests at heart, including Kaa (voice of Scarlett Johansson), a python whose seductive voice and gaze hypnotizes the man-cub, and the smooth-talking King Louie (voice of Christopher Walken), who tries to coerce Mowgli into giving up the secret to the elusive and deadly red flower: fire.

‘The all-star cast also includes Lupita Nyong’o as the voice of the fiercely protective mother wolf Raksha, and Giancarlo Esposito as the voice of wolf pack’s alpha male Akela. “The Jungle Book” seamlessly blends live-action with photorealistic CGI animals and environments, using up-to-the-minute technology and storytelling techniques to immerse audiences in an enchanting and lush world. The wild adventure swings into cinemas in 3D on April 15, 2016.’
