Minions (Blu-ray Review)

November 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Allison Janney, Jennifer Saunders
Director: Kyle Balda, Pierre Coffin
Running Time: 91 mins
Certificate: U
Release Date: November 16th 2015 (UK)

I severely doubt that when the creators of Despicable Me came up with the Minions as a bit of comic relief they ever thought they would become the phenomenon they have. Indeed, you could be forgiven if you’d forgotten those films were about Gru, due to the massive wave of Minions merchandise in the shops, and now a spin-off movie that has massively eclipsed its predecessors, becoming only the third animated film ever to gross more than a billion at cinemas worldwide.

The film takes us back to the origins of the little yellow creatures, who have been look for the evilest boss to follow around for millions of years, from prehistoric fish to the T-rex. However, the last few hundred years have been tough, with the Minions losing all their masters and retreating from the world and hiding away at the South Pole. [Read more…]

Starring: Daniel Brocklebank, Jonny Labey, Suzanne Collins, Craig Stein
Director: Leon Lopez
Running Time: 87 mins
Certificate: 15

Brookside and Hollyoaks actor Leon Lopez heads for the writer and director’s chair with Soft Lad, which follows David (Jonny Labey), a young gay guy who is having an affair with the older Jules (Daniel Brocklebank). What seriously complicates things is that Jules is David’s brother-in-law, and they are having sex behind David’s sister’s back.

David wants more, but Jules is still in denial about his sexuality (even if he can’t hold his jealousy about David in check) and both know there will be major fallout if the secret comes out. After an argument with Jules, David meets Sam (Craig Stein), who offers him the relationship he really wants. However, Jules’ lies cause more problems than David ever expected. [Read more…]

The Moment It Becomes More Than A Hookup – The first part of the gay mini-series debuts

November 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

moment-is-became-moreBuzzfeed Yellow has released the first part of a new gay web mini-series, which takes a look at (as the title suggests), people negotiating the point between where it’s just about a bit of fun and sex, and when it becomes more than that.

The Moment It Becomes More Than A Hookup follows two guys who’ve been hooking up for a few weeks. One of them is looking for something more and thinks he may have found it. However, the other is still deep in the closet and seemingly confused about what he’s actually looking for. But will he let the other guy sleep over?

It appears future episodes will look at other ‘moments’, such as when the relationship becomes official, and when they try to go long distance.

Take a look at The Moment It Becomes More Than A Hookup below.

Apropos Of Nothing: Great Pics Offer A Few More Reasons To Buy The Warwick Naked Rowers Calendar

November 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

naked-rowers-2016-pic7-slideA few weeks ago we featured the video the University Of Warwick Men’s Rowing Club, aka the Naked Rowers, released to help promote their 2016 calendar. Well, we thought it would be worth following up with a few pics of the hot guys, which come from both their calendar and the limited edition 220-page coffee table book they’re also releasing (which ain’t cheap, but will raise plenty of cash for charity).

I do wonder though, when a student applies to the club which is more important – an ability to row, or being comfortable getting photographed naked? After all, the Naked Rowers have become a bit of an international phenomenon, raising thousands of pounds for their Sport Allies charity from people around the world.

Of the charity, which uses sport to combat homophobia, naked rower Lucas Etienne told Huffpo, “All of us have gained so much from having sports in our lives,” Etienne said. “The idea that people could be gay and not get that privilege is unfair, and we want to do something about it.”

Tristan Edwards adds, “A lot of the problems around homophobia in sport come from the enforcement of gender norms… people saying what a man is or what a woman is. We don’t want to be put into a box in terms of what a man ‘should be’ in sport. This is how we think you can act.”

Oh, and just in case you were wondering, they do actually do some rowing, with Edwards saying, “The last two years have been the most successful we’ve had as a club.”

Take a look at a selection of pics below, and you can order the 2016 calendar, films and more here. [Read more…]

Gayby Baby Trailer – Aussie kids with LGBT parents get a documentary

November 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gayby-baby-slideAlthough some people still have problems with same sex parents, there are plenty more out there ready to say there’s no real issue – and that includes most of those raised by LGBT people.

Gayby Baby looks into ‘the lives of four kids – Gus, Ebony, Matt and Graham – whose parents all happen to be gay. As they each wrestle with the onset of puberty, the outside world wrestles with the issue of marriage equality, and whether or not kids of same-sex families are at risk.’

Maya Newell’s documentary is due to have its New York premiere on November 18th at the DOC NYC: The New York Documentary Film Festival, but if you want to get a taste, you can watch the trailer below.

Gay Surrogacy/Adoption Documentary Ghosts of the République Seeks Funding

November 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ghosts-of-the-republiqueWhile gay people can now get married in quite a few countries, if they want to add children to their family many still face an uphill struggle (just look at the US judge this week who took a child from its foster parents against all advice, just because those parents were lesbians). The documentary Ghosts of the République set out to look at the journey of two married French men adopt a baby through international surrogacy.

It’s particularly apt to have the doc set in France, as they do not recognise international surrogacy, so children born this way are often considered parent-less and cannot easily become citizens – hence why the title refers to them as being ‘ghosts’.

Director Jonathon Narducci has launched a Kickstarter to get the doc completed, which hopes to raise $58,000.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Ghosts of the République is a documentary film following the compelling story of a newlywed gay couple in France who are forced to break French law during their journey to have a child. Without support from the government, Nicolas and Aurelien have turned to the U.S. to have a baby through a surrogate. Their surrogate gave birth to a healthy baby girl on October 15th, but the future of their unborn baby’s life is largely unknown.

‘Hand in hand with the stress of bringing their baby back to France, Nicolas and Aurelien must face the very real possibility that their baby will not be recognized as their own, or even as a citizen, when they return home. Will they be recognized as parents? Will they be accepted by society? Or will their child grow up as one of the increasing number of “Ghosts of the Republique”: Children in France who are not recognized by the law. Children with no legal parents. Children who are lost in a system that fails to acknowledge them as part of any family.’

Take a look at the fundraising video below, and if you like what you see, head over to Kickstarter.

First Pic Of Chris Pine On The Wonder Woman Set Arrives

November 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

chris-pine-wonder-woman1Back in May Chris Pine signed on to play an important role in Warner/DC’s planned standalone Wonder Woman movie, and now he’s on the set all ready to be Steve Trevor.

An image of him in costume for the role has popped up on Twitter, showing that as has been speculated, the movie will definitely be set in the past (some had wondered if it would be brought to the present day due to Wonder Woman’s appearance in next year’s Batman vs Superman). That said, rumours suggest the second half of the film may move to the present day, although it’s not known if some sort of time travel device will allow Pine’s character to come along for the ride.

In the comics, Steve Trevor  crash lands on the Amazons’ home island of Paradise during World War II. Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) falls for him after she nurses him back to health, and then when he returns to America she follows him – becoming Diana Prince, who in true comic fashion, Steve doesn’t realise is the same person as the hero, Wonder Woman.

Wonder Woman is due out June 2017.

Tracy Morgan Up for Lee Daniels’ Richard Pryor Biopic

November 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tracy-morganFollowing his terrible vehicle accident, it’s taken Tracy Morgan a long time to get his health back and be ready to start working again. He’s made a few TV appearances, including hosting SNL, and now he’s ready to book a full acting gig, as the 30 Rock star is in talks to play legendary comedian Red Foxx in the long-gestating biopic of Richard Pryor.

The film has been in the works for years, but got new life recently with Lee Daniels (Precious, Empire) taking the director’s chair, Bill Condon (Dreamgirls) and Danny Strong (Empire) writing the script, and Mike Epps playing the iconic Pryor.

Foxx and Pryor played important roles in each others’ career, with Pryor getting his start as the opening act and Foxx’s comedy club. Then, once Pryor became famous, he repaid the favour by helping get Foxx onto Hollywood’s radar, resulting in the iconic sitcom, Sanford & Son.

Oprah Winfrey is also on board as Pryor’s grandmother, with Eddie Murphy and Taraji P. Henson as his parents and Kate Hudson as his wife.

Doug Liman In Talks To Direct Channing Tatum In X-Men Spin-off Gambit

November 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

doug-limanThe X-Men spin-off Gambit seemed to be motoring along, but then hit a buffer finding a director, with numerous people turning it down, then Rupert Wyatt signing on, only to leave shortly afterwards. There was even talk of Channing Tatum leaving the title role.

However now the producers will be hoping they’ve sorted the problem, as THR reports that Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Edge Of Tomorrow director Doug Liman is in talks to make the movie.

There’s no news on the specific plot, but Josh Zetumer has written the script, which will concentrate on the mutant who, as Wikipedia says, ‘has the ability to mentally create, control, and manipulate pure kinetic energy to his desire. He is also incredibly knowledgeable and skilled in card-throwing, hand-to-hand combat, and the use of a staff. Gambit is known to charge playing cards and other objects with kinetic energy, using them as explosive projectiles.’

The problems have meant that the original February 2016 release date definitely won’t happen, and while it’s currently dated for October 2016, don’t be surprised to see that slip into 2017.
