Trumbo Trailer – Bryan Cranston gets Blacklisted by Hollywood

August 13, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

TRUMBO-bryan-cranstonThis could be one of the films that will be reaping in the nominations come awards seasons, if its backers get their way. With a prime November US release planned, it’s main issue may be if Hollywood voters see it as too critical of their industry.

Now we get our first taste with a trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The successful career of 1940s screenwriter Dalton Trumbo (Bryan Cranston) comes to a crushing end when he and other Hollywood figures are blacklisted for their political beliefs. TRUMBO (directed by Jay Roach) tells the story of his fight against the U.S. government and studio bosses in a war over words and freedom, which entangled everyone in Hollywood from Hedda Hopper (Helen Mirren) and John Wayne to Kirk Douglas and Otto Preminger.’

That’s a roundabout way of saying that in 1947, Trumbo was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) during their investigation into Communist influences in Hollywood. He refused to testify and ‘name names’, and subsequently became one of the ‘Hollywood 10′ screenwriters who were blacklisted by the studio system.

However he continued to write under pen names, winning two Oscars in the 1950s under other names for Roman Holiday and The Brave One. When he was hired to write Spartacus, Kirk Douglas insisted he be allowed to do so under his own name, which helped put an end to blacklist once and for all. [Read more…]

man-from-UNCLE-retro-posterSpying has never looked so good. That is certainly the case in THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E, the action-packed, sexy and stylish movie hitting cinemas Friday 14thAugust.

Henry Cavill (“Man of Steel”) stars as Napoleon Solo opposite Armie Hammer (“The Social Network”) as Illya Kuryakin in director Guy Ritchie’s action adventure The Man from U.N.C.L.E., a fresh take on the hugely popular 1960s television series.

Set against the backdrop of the early 1960s, at the height of the Cold War, “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” centres on CIA agent Solo and KGB agent Kuryakin.  Forced to put aside longstanding hostilities, the two team up on a joint mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organization, which is bent on destabilizing the fragile balance of power through the proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology.  The duo’s only lead is the daughter of a vanished German scientist, who is the key to infiltrating the criminal organization, and they must race against time to find him and prevent a worldwide catastrophe.

With its vintage cars, iconic fashion and sharp humour it is more than your average spy film and it is sure to be the summer’s most stylish spy flick.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (Cinema Review)

August 11, 2015 By Mike Martin Leave a Comment

Starring: Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Alicia Vikander, Elizabeth Debicki, Hugh Grant
Director: Guy Ritchie
Running Time: 117 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: August 14th 2015 (UK)

Turning one of the most beloved 1960s spy TV series into a movie was always going to be a gamble, but in the blokey hands of Guy Ritchie all is safe. It’s everything you’d hope for – stylish, great clothes, cool soundtrack, a decent enough plot about saving the world from a sociopath, and full of period detail.

Where it falls down is in the crucial chemistry between the leads – Armie Hammer does well as the grumpy, disapproving Soviet agent Kuryakin, but Henry Cavill as Napoleon Solo is so wooden you wonder why someone doesn’t mistake him for a park bench and sit on him. There is no chemistry at all between either of them and Alicia Vikander, whose ‘aren’t I pretty’ routine is becoming slightly wearing. [Read more…]

Tom Hardy Putting Together 100 Bullets Comic Adaptation

August 11, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tom-hardyTom Hardy may have had to step away from the comic book adaptation Suicide Squad due to his commitment to the overrunning The Revenant shoot, but he’s not completely leaving the comic world as he’s set to produce a film version of the Vertigo Comic, 100 Bullets.

THR says of the property, ‘Running for 100 issues from 1999 to 2009, the acclaimed comic centered on an enigmatic man named Agent Graves as he presents different people, for reasons unknown, with a gun, the identity of the person who ruined their lives … and a hundred rounds of untraceable ammunition. Over the course of the series emerged a large crime saga that won accolades in the form of Eisner and Harvey Awards for Azzarello, Risso and the comic. The plot for movie is being kept locked in a briefcase but insiders say the plan is to stay true to the comic.’

It sounds like the film Hardy was talking about recently when he teased a return to the DC Comics world (Vertigo is a DC imprint), where he said, “It contains elements of all kinds of stuff. From Ocean’s Eleven, to Batman, you can get all the wrappers out and it would be a big, really cool, Technicolor Pulp Fiction. It’s a psychological fuckfest, it’s absolutely awesome. It’s as if you would take Transmetropolitan and make it happen, but it’s not that out there [as in a futuristic cyberpunk world]. It’s something which is much more real world. It could be like Heat, it could be fucking awesome.”

At the moment Tom is purely set to produce, although it’s being put together as a movie for him to star in, although he won’t fully commit to that until development is a bit further down the line.

Leonardo DiCaprio & Martin Scorsese Reuniting True Crime Tale Devil in the White City

August 11, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

leonardo-dicaprioMartin Scorsese is a director who likes to have muses, but it seems Leonardo DiCaprio may see the famed director as his muse, as he’s brought the helmer in to direct one of his passion project, and adaptation of Erik Larson’s true-crime thriller, The Devil In The White City, according to Deadline.

Leo has long wanted to bring the book to the screen, but even with his backing it’s been a tough sell, but with Scorsese also backing it, it’s finally got some traction, with Paramount winning a major bidding battle to take on the movie.

In the movie, ‘DiCaprio will play one of the most prolific serial killers in Chicago history, the 19th century equivalent of Hannibal Lecter.’ He would be the legendary Dr H.H. Holmes, a man who has already inspired many movie characters and is most famed for his ‘murder castle’, a hotel he had built complete with secret passages, tube and various contraption which allowed him to kill people at his leisure.

The Imitation Game’s Graham Moore will write the script, although it’s not clear when it might shoot.

Apropos Of Nothing: The Calendar Boys Of Project Soaked Are Looking Good In Their Underwear

August 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

project-soaked-slideIt’s coming up to the time of year when an array of calendars line up to arouse us with their images of scantily clad men, all of whom have stripped down and are looking extremely good in the hope of raising a bit of money for charity.

One of the first off the blocks this year is Project Soaked, which features 14 guys who’ve stripped down to nothing but their underwear, then got under the water and soaped themselves up for a 2016 calendar.

The men include porn star Paddy O’Brian, who along with the other guys is hoping to raise over £10,000 for the Prostate Cancer UK charity’s Men United movement.

“I’m delighted to be raising awareness and much needed money to help beat prostate cancer,” photograper Mark Lister told Gay Times. “The more I read and the more I spoke to people about it, the more I realised that most men don’t actually know what the prostate is or what it does.”

You can take a look at some of the teaser pics below, and if you like what you see, head over to the Project Soaked website to order your copy. [Read more…]

17 year-old Lucas Helth Postma from Denmark becomes the youngest Iris Prize finalist. Boy, his accomplished short film is one of three from Denmark competing for the 2015 Iris Prize. The film tells the story of 16-year-old Emilie who has always been a boy inside although his mother cannot accept the way he feels. During an Easter lunch he decides to do something drastic, which has its consequences.

The films will screen during this year’s Iris Prize Festival which takes place from October 7th – 11th in Cardiff, Wales, (UK). The winner of the Iris Prize will be announced on Sunday 11th October 2015 during the Iris Awards hosted by Amy Lamé.

“Once again the shortlist for the Iris Prize represents the best of the best. 20 of the short-listed films have been nominated by our partner festivals, including for the first time ShanghaiPRIDE in China. These film festivals from around the world have their fingers on the pulse of upcoming LGBT filmmaking talent. I’m confident that amongst this year’s shortlist of live action, documentaries and animated films we have yet another winner deserving of the Iris Prize,” said Andrew Pierce, Festival Chair.

“Iris is recognised for supporting talented film makers from all over the world. Seven shorts, made with the prize, have been produced since we launched in 2006. “British films have always been well received at the Iris Prize Film Festival and we are delighted to be screening 10 of the best British LGBT shorts this year. I’m delighted that Pinewood Studios has agreed to sponsor this important prize, they represent everything which makes the British Film Industry the envy of the world,” said Andrew Pierce.

The films will be judged by a five strong independent jury, who will be announced later in the year.

Win The Gay-Themed Stand On DVD!

August 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Stand-dvd-coverThe gay-themed Stand is released on DVD in the UK from August 10th courtesy of TLA Releasing, and we’ve teamed up with them to give away three copies of the movie in this competition!

After taking a wrong turn in their car, a young gay Russian couple witnesses what they believe is a vicious gay bashing; their quandary over what to do about it propels them—and this suspenseful drama—into ever more dangerous territory. The slow-burning film is highly topical, given the intense worldwide outrage over Russia’s mistreatment of gays and the country’s 2013 federal law prohibiting homosexual “propaganda.” Anton and Vlad make a handsome pair, sharing a loving and natural chemistry in the comfortable privacy of their Moscow apartment. For Anton, the burden of what they may have witnessed outweighs Vlad’s fear of probing too deeply into the incident. Convinced of the police’s indifference—recent events make this a terrifyingly plausible scenario—Anton talks his skeptical lover into launching their own amateur investigation into the hate crime. Their risky search for the truth has unexpected and grim consequences.

To be in with a chance of winning one of the three copies of Stand on DVD that we’ve got to give away, answer the question below and fill in your details, then press submit! The competition closes on August 24th, 2015, so get answering and good luck. [Read more…]

Zac Efron In Talks For His Most Shirtless Role Yet – Baywatch The Movie

August 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

zac-efron-slideThe Rock has been attached to a planned movie version of Baywatch for a while, and now he may have some company, as THR reports that Zac Efron is in talks to co-star.

Yes, Efron has managed it, finding the most shirtless role he could possibly have – he’s spent several years trying to find excuses to show off his abs, and now he’s got a film where he probably wouldn’t need to wear a shirt all!

The film take on the extremely popular (at the time) 1990s TV series follow a ‘by-the-book and very serious lifeguard (Johnson) who is forced to team up with a young rule-flouting hothead (Efron) in order to save their beach from environmental destruction at the hands of an oil tycoon’.

It sounds as if Horrible Bosses director Seth Gordon is going for a bit of a 21 Jump Street vibe, which isn’t surprising considering how successful that TV to movie adaptation was. The hope is to shoot the film early next year (probably starting in February).

Director: Alex Winter
Running Time: 84 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: July 27th 2015 (UK)

The world of Internet fame is a strange thing. The bigger names of Youtube have millions of fans, people throng to their videos, books and other paraphernalia and some of them make millions of dollars from it – however outside a very specific demographic, names like Tyler Oakley and Joey Graceffa mean absolutely nothing. It’s almost like there’s a parallel world which most older people aren’t even aware exists.

Comedy duo Smosh (aka Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla) were one of the first, having the most viewed video on Youtube and the most followed channel back in the days when the video sharing site was still growing into the behemoth that it is today. And now they’ve got their own movie. [Read more…]
