Gay Short Film Showcase: Dirty Paws – The relationship between guy & a werewolf gets animated

August 4, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

dirty-pawsIf ever there was a show that lived up to accusations of gay-baiting, it’s Teen Wolf. However even that show has never gone as far as to get two guys in bed together when one of them is in full werewolf mode.

Animator Karina Farek has though, with Dirty Paws, her amusing thesis film for SVA bfa animation.

At first it’s not clear why one man is tieing up his boyfriend (and not in a kinky way), but once the full moon is out, it becomes clear that one of them is a lyncanthrope. However, the duo have learned how to deal with that once a month.

It all seems to be going well until the werewolf runs off and his boyfriend has to find him. Take a look at the animated short below, along with a blooper reel.

Kevin Bacon Thinks We Need More Penises In The Movies

August 4, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kevin-bacon-psaMost people agree that film has a tendency to objectify women. So what’s the answer to this to bring about equality? Do we cover the ladies up, or do we disrobe the gents more, so at least everyone is being objectified?

Kevin Bacon thinks the latter, or at least he does in this parody PSA, which was made for Mashable to promote his new movie, Cop Car. In it, Kev sure doesn’t like how scared Hollywood is of showing the ‘d’, and so he offers to play all the roles that demand male genitalia (which in his mind, is all male role), from evening up the female nudity in Game Of Thrones with a bit of dick, to actually show some peen in 50 Shades Of Grey.

It’s a fun little film, and while it’s obviously made to amuse it does make a few good points about the disparity between male and female nudity on the screen.

As far as we know, Cop Car doesn’t show off Kevin’s bacon either, but at least he’s standing up for the cause. Take a look below. [Read more…]

Stonewall Trailer – Jeremy Irvine fights for gay rights in Roland Emmerich’s movie

August 4, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

stonewall-trailer-slideIt’s certainly worth making a new movie about the Stonewall riots, as while most people have heard of them, even many gay people have no idea what actually happened, beyond the fact it’s the place where the modern gay rights fight is said to have started.

While this trailer suggests Roland Emmerich’s movie might have a slightly simplified take on the events of Stonewall (it is keen to say it’s inspired by events of June 1969, rather than being based on real characters), it still looks like it might be pretty interesting and entertaining.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘STONEWALL is a drama about a fictional young man caught up during the 1969 Stonewall riots. Danny Winters (Jeremy Irvine) is forced to leave behind friends and loved ones when he is kicked out of his parent’s home and flees to New York. Alone in Greenwich Village, homeless and destitute, he befriends a group of street kids who soon introduce him to the local watering hole The Stonewall Inn; however, this shady, mafia-run club is far from a safe-haven.  As Danny and his friends experience discrimination, endure atrocities and are repeatedly harassed by the police, we see a rage begin to build. This emotion runs through Danny and the entire community of young gays, lesbians and drag queens who populate the Stonewall Inn and erupts in a storm of anger. With the toss of a single brick, a riot ensues and a crusade for equality is born.’

Joey King, Jonny Beauchamp, Caleb Landry Jones, Atticus Dean Mitchell, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Ron Perlman co-star. The movie is out in the US on September 25th. [Read more…]

Fantastic Four Extended Preview – The superhero quartet are back and revamped

August 4, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

fantastic-four-final-poster-slideThere have been rumours of trouble surrounding the production of the reboot of Fantastic Four, which has led some to write it off already. However reports from a couple of preview screenings have been pretty good, and it may end up surprising even the studio (which seems uncertain about the film).

Now we get our best taste yet with a four-minute extended preview of the movie, which you can take a look at below. It actually looks pretty good – more serious than the last take on the Marvel characters, but still with a sense of fun.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘FANTASTIC FOUR, a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.’

The film is in UK cinemas August 6th. [Read more…]

Saluting The Gay Screen Sissy In A Great New Video

August 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

edward-everett-hortonIn the past the ‘sissy’ was virtually the only representation of queer male sexuality that ever made it to the screen, and even then from the 1910s to 1950s the idea that they preferred boys to girls had to be hidden. The result was a complex stereotype, that in some movies was a comic character audiences loved to laugh at (and in some cases laugh with), and in others was a dangerous, destructive force out to destroy the ‘normal’ people.

However the rise of gay rights saw the sissy shunned, seen as a derogatory strereotype that de-humanised and de-sexualised gay people. However in the last few years there’s been a bit of a re-evaluation of these characters (which has come in tandem with a re-evaluation of the place of camp in gay culture), with some starting to see them as pioneers and a part of our past we should appreciate rather than denigrate, as well as something that should have a future in film and TV.

One of those with a soft spot for sissies in Matt Baume, who’s produced the great video below that looks at the history of this long-standing stereotype, covering everything from the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard Of Oz and Dr. Smith in Lost In Space, through to the more modern takes on the archetype, such as Jack in Will & Grace.

It’s an interesting video with a bit of history, a bit of sociology, as well as an appreciation that the British do the sissies better than anyone else! Take a look below, it’s well worth it, and may make you think again about what these camp characters did for us, both the good and the bad. [Read more…]

Roland Emmerich Talks About The Difficulty Of Getting His Stonewall Movie Made

August 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac 4 Comments

stonewall-pic9-slideWe’ve come a long way in regards to the depiction of LGBT characters on the screen, but despite the success of Brokeback Mountain and a couple of gay-related movies making waves each year, it’s still extremely difficult to fund films where sexuality is the core of the story.

Even someone like Roland Emmerich – who can usually get $100 million plus budgets together to make films like 2012 and The Day After Tomorrow – found it almost impossible to get his planned take on the Stonewall riots funded. You’d have thought with a story people have heard of and a director as well known as Emmerich it wouldn’t have been tough, but it was.

Roland has been telling Vulture about the difficulties, saying, “It was an uphill battle, but we finally did it. We wanted to do it in New York on location, and that failed miserably because it was so expensive.”

He also wanted to ensure it was an ensemble story, but that added extra diffifculties.”If you can cast a central character with one or two famous actors, you have a good chance to get the movie financed,” he says, “but in my case, I knew there was not really one central character in the Stonewall riots.”

Emmerich also had something to say in response to criticisms that have already surfaced about the unfinshed film, based on the fact the synopsis suggests the events of Stonewall will be seen through the eyes of a young, white character called Danny (Jeremy Irvine) – leading to accusations of white-washing and ignoring the trans* people who were central to events in New York in 1969. However, he insists that while Danny may be the way into the story, the movie isn’t ignoring the the diversity. “I think we represented it very well,” he says. “We have drag queens, lesbians, we have everything in the film because we wanted to portray a broader image of what ‘gay’ means.”

It’ll certainly be interesting to see how he does handle it, and hopefully the critics will wait until they’ve seen the movie before writing it off. Emmerich certainly seems devoted, as it’s rumoured he found it so difficult to raise the funds to make the movie through normal channels that he ended up providing some of the budget himself. The film’s out in the US in September.

Arrow Is Getting A Gay, African-American Superhero – Curtis Holt/Mr. Terrific

August 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Echo-KellumEver since it began on TV, Arrow has had a large gay fanbase. It’s something it hasn’t been afraid to play-on, with bucket loads of shirtlessness, teasingly homoerotic responses in interviews and an attitude that has seen some accuse it of gay-baiting. However, there hasn’t actually been a vast amount of LGBT characters and activity on the screen (indeed the first season of The Flash had more than three seasons of Arrow).

Now though, executive producer Marc Guggenheim has revealed, “We’re often asked when we’re going to add another LGBT character to the show and our version of Mr Terrific happens to be gay for anyone that cares about that kind of stuff.”

Echo Kellum (Ben and Kate) will play Curtis Holt/Mr. Terrific, a character that’s been part of the DC Comics universe since 1997 (there was a previous Mr. Terrific, aka Terry Sloane, although it’s believed Arrow will concentrate on the more modern take). However, it’s interesting that while nearly all screen versions of comic characters have either retained the sexuality they had on the page or straightened them up, this time around they’re making him gay, something he’s never been in other incarnations.

Indeed in the comics it was the death of his wife and child that turned Holt from billionaire, Gold Medal-winning Decathlete into a supehero. It’ll be interesting to see how that changes in Arrow. All that’s known so far is that he will will join the show as someone who works with Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards).

Greg Berlanti has previously spoken about his desire to have an LGBT character as a series regular rather than as a guest star (which is what they’ve been on both Arrow and The Flash), but it’s not known whether the plan is for Holt to be that regular character.

Insurgent (DVD Review)

August 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Miles Teller, Kate Winslet
Director: Robert Schwentke
Running Time: 119 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: August 3rd 2015 (UK)

Divergent arrived last year with a lot of fanfare and the hope on the part of its studio that it would become the new Hunger Games. While it did fairly good business at the box office, it didn’t exactly leave much of an impression. Now its sequel, Insurgent, arrives, which like its predecessor mainly leaves the viewers with the impression that, ‘Well, that happened’.

Following the events of the first film, Tris (Shailene Woodley) and many others are on the run. Meanwhile Jeanine moves on with her plan to take control of all the factions. Although she continues to see the divergents – those with multiple personality traits – as dangerous, she also knows she needs them, as it is only divergents who can open a box left behind by the city founders, which she believes will help her cement her power and end the divergent issue completely. Deadpool Teaser – Ryan Reynolds’ merc with a mouth has a message for us

August 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

deadpool-pic1-slideThe trailer for Deadpool should arrive tomorrow, but ahead of that he’s got a message for us, which seems designed to show that this will be a far more irreverent, sarcastic superhero movie, that sticks far closer to the tone of the character in the comics than how he was in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life. Starring Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Gina Carano, T.J. Miller and Ed Skrein’.
