It Takeis Two: Episode 1 – George & Brad Takei take us into a heightened version of their world

April 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

it-takeis-two-ep1Last week we posted a teaser for a brand new web series from the wonderful world of George Takei, which promised that It Takei’s Two would bring us into a heightened reality version of the life of him and his husband, Brad.

Now the first episode has arrived and it’s a lot of fun (and very resonant for anyone who’s active on the web) as Brad discovers there are all sorts of mean memes and images of him online. In his fury he attempts to get them taken down and to stop the web being so nasty. However it takes George to point out you can’t please all the people all the time, and that when it comes to the web someone’s always going to take things the wrong way or take random, unnecessary potshots (or at least what seem like potshots to the person they’re about).

Brad still thinks he can win though and heads to Google’s NYC HQ.

Take a look at episode 1 of It Takeis Two below. [Read more…]

Garrett Hedlund & Olivia Wide Confirmed For Tron 3

April 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tron-legacy-olivia-wilde-garrett-hudlundA couple of year ago Disney had massive plans to build a huge Tron franchise, but when Tron: Legacy failed to live up to expectations at the box office many thought that would be the end of all the extensive multimedia plans. However now a third movie is coming, with Joseph Kosinski once more directing.

While it’s seemed certain for a while that Garrett Hedlund would return, that’s now been confirmed and THR adds that Olivia Wilde will be back as Quorra.

Interestingly while all this info is out there, Disney still hasn’t officially announced the movie, even though numerous reports over the past few months have said it’s gearing up to shoot later this year.

There are no story details either, although Kosinski has previously suggested he wanted a third film to expand on and explore some ideas of Legacy, particularly the final minutes.

Predestination (DVD Review)

April 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Ethan Hawke, Sarah Snook, Noah Taylor
Director: Michael Spierig, Peter Spierig
Running Time: 94 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: April 6th 2015 (UK)

Predestination is one of those films where some people are absolutely going to adore it and think it’s one of the best films they’ve ever seen, while others will be left rather cold. It pretty much depends on whether twists and ideas are enough for you, or if you demand absolute logic from your movies.

Ethan Hawke pays a special kind of cop who travels through time on the trail of bad guys, attempting to stop them before major crimes are committed. He’s trying to catch the Fizzle Bomber and is aware that he won’t be able to stop an atrocity in New York City that will kill more than 10,000 people unless he catches up to the killer very soon. Logan Lerman & Sarah Gadon Have Indignation

April 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac 5 Comments

logan-lermanThe extremely long-gestating adaptation of Philip Rother’s American Pastoral is slowly making its way to the screen, with Ewan McGregor set to star and direct. However it’s not the only Roth novel that’s getting a movie version as James Schamus is set to write and direct Indignation, which has just added Logan Lerman and Sarah Gadon to the cast, according to Deadline.

Roth’s Indignation is ‘set in 1951 and focuses on Marcus (Lerman), the 18-year-old son of a kosher butcher in Newark who grapples with anti-Semitism, sexual repression and the escalating Korean War as he comes of age at a Midwestern Lutheran college. Into his life comes Olivia Hutton (Gadon). Blonde and pretty, Olivia is a classmate of Marcus’ at Winesburg College. She goes on a date with Marcus and is attracted to his intensity. She is sexually promiscuous, headstrong and fiercely independent. A daughter to a highly regarded Cleveland surgeon, Olivia had previously attempted suicide and spent time in a mental institution.’

It’s a good fit for Lerman, who many don’t realise is Jewish himself and so has the right cultural background for the role.

Gadon incidentally has also just signed up for the mini-series adaptation of Stephen King’s 11/22/63, which has James Franco in the lead as a time-travelling teacher who sets out to prevent JFK’s assassination.

Shia LaBeouf Gets A Taste For Andrea Arnold’s American Honey

April 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

shia-lebeoufAndrea Arnold has built a great reputation in the UK with Fish Tank, Red Road and Wuthering Heights, and now she trying her hand in the US, although sticking with indie end of the spectrum rather than going full Hollywood. She’s directing American Honey and now Variety reports that Shia LaBeouf is set to star.

Based on a screenplay Arnold wrote herself, the film ‘centers on a runaway teenager who’s selling magazine subscriptions around the U.S. and gets caught up in a whirlwind of hard-partying, law-bending and young love’

It’s not clear who LeBeouf will play in this coming of age tale, or indeed when the movie will shoot, although it’ll be looking for buyers at May’s Cannes Film Festival.

Something Must Break (Cinema Review)

April 6, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Saga Becker, Iggy Malmborg, Shima Niavarani
Director: Ester Martin Bergsmark
Running Time: 81 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: April 3rd 2015 (UK)

Sebastian (Saga Becker) is feeling lost and is contemplating suicide when he meets Andreas (Iggy Malmborg), who is straight but responds to Sebastian’s feminine qualities. After a very brief flirtation they embark on a sexual relationship. Their bond continues to grow, with these two people on the edge of society falling deeply for one another, but while Andreas is fine behind closed doors, he doesn’t know how to handle their relationship when it begins to creep into the rest of his life. Sebastian meanwhile isn’t just a feminine young man, as she is hoping to start living as a woman.

There are all sorts of fascinating ideas and issues swirling around Something Must Break, and the film has a great sense of romance and sexual tension (and release) that works extremely well. However it also has an annoyingly pretentious edge where it withholds motivations, flirts the edges of the ideas it’s dealing with and has a constant sense of seeming extremely pleased with itself. King Of Escape (DVD Review)

April 6, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Ludovic Berthillot, Hafsia Herzi, Pierre Laur
Director: Alain Guiraudie
Running Time: 93 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: March 23rd 2015 (UK)

While it was made in 2009, King Of Escape is getting a new UK release now following the success of director Alain Guiraudie’s last movie, Stranger By The Lake. King Of Escape is in some respects a very different movie, although you can certainly feel the echoes between the two films.

King Of Escape is the sort of film that’s likely to divide audiences, as you really need to ‘get’ it. If you don’t you’re likely to think it’s weird, somewhat inexplicable and more than a little nasty. However the key is to understand that while this appears to be a comedy set in rural France, in many respects it’s a subversive fantasy taking place somewhere where the rules don’t quite match up to what we expect. Gay Short Film Showcase: Stop Calling Me Honey Bunny – Same sex relationship issues explored via giant rabbits!

April 6, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

stop-calling-me-honey-bunnyIt turns out it’s not just humans who have same sex relationship issues, it’s rabbits too – or at least six-foot tall Bunny costume rabbits anyway. We loved Stop Calling Me Honey Bunny when we caught the short film at the Iris Prize Festival. Now it’s been released online and as a bonus, if you watch it before April 20th and email the makers with three sex toys seen in the film, one name will be drawn from all the entries and that person will win a $350 gift certificate to Chez Noir to be used online from anywhere worldwide (cheznoir.ca).

Enter by emailing: [email protected]

Here’s what we said about the film at Iris: ‘In a relationship that’s lost its sparkle, two bunnies take steps to reinvigorate their love life. With scenes that will resonate with anyone in a relationship that survived beyond the honeymoon phase, this is a sweet, funny and slightly cock-eyed look at how relationships can change from constant sexy fun into quieter, more intimate affairs.

‘While there’s nothing ground-breaking or particularly revelatory in this portrait of a lesbian relationship, it’s a touching and affectionate look at the frustrations that come with settling into a long-term relationship. Well-shot, and nicely acted, to the extent where the bunny masks actually seem to enhance the emotive acting by the two leads. You’ll laugh, you’ll cringe and you’ll almost certainly have been in a similar situation.’

Take a look at the film below and then enter the contest.

James Van Der Beek & Anna Camp Only Want Straight People To Buy From Their Shopping Channel

April 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

indiana-shopping-channel-james-van-der-beekIndiana Republicans probably didn’t know what hit them this week. Just a few years ago enacting hideously anti-gay legislation was a win-win for the political party, as it would please their bigoted supporters while liberals would just tut and grumble and not do anything about it.

However after the Governor of Indiana signed a ‘Religious Freedom Act’ – which was actually a fairly thinly disguised attempt to ensure anyone can discriminate against gays as long as they claim it was because of their religion – they faced a massive backlash, not just from those you’d usually expect to decry such a law, but also a raft of major businesses (including Walmart, who until recently didn’t have much of an LGBT rights record), and even other states, who banned their employees from travelling to Indiana on non-essential business.

Now James Van Der Beek and Anna Camp have gotten in on the act with a great Funny Or Die video that does a great job of showing what is so odious about these laws. After all, those behind them always say  laws like this are just about allowing small business owners to follow their religious convictions, but they’re is actually about bigotry and can have massive repurcussions, especially if larger businesses decide to fire gay people or not serve them.

In the vid Anna and James are hosts of the Indiana Shopping Channel, and they certainly don’t want the gays buying their goods. As James puts it, if gays can get tot buy things from them, “What’s next – I’ll leave my wife Cindy and then go shack up with Don in a post-modern house in Palm Springs?”.

Takea look at the video below. [Read more…]
