Portrait Of Jason (US DVD/Blu-ray Review)

November 11, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Jason Holliday, Shirley Clarke, Carl Lee
Director: Shirley Clarke
Running Time: 105 mins
Certificate: NR
Release Date: November 11th 2014 (US)

Much of queer history has been lost because by necessity it had to be hidden, but in more recent years there’s been a risk of many things disappearing simply because it’s marginalised and nobody’s been properly taking care of it. Portrait Of Jason was in danger of going that way, despite the fact it’s been acclaimed by many as one of the most important early gay-themed documentaries. Even the legendary Ingmar Bergman described it as “the most extraordinary film I’ve seen in my life.”

However, thanks to the likes of the Academy Film Archive, the UCLA Film & Television Archive, crowdfunding and the sterling work of Milestone Films, the movie has now been restored and given a proper release, allowing a new generation to take a look. [Read more…]

Open Up To Me (Fringe! Festival Review)

November 11, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Leea Klemola, Peter Franzén, Ria Kataja, Emmi Nivala, Alex Anton
Director: Simo Halinen
Running Time: 95 mins
Certificate: NR
Release Date: November 9th 2014 (Fringe! Screening)

You could be forgiven for thinking that the only type of film and TV that Scandinavian countries make are moody thrillers, but that’s solely because the more diverse cinema that comes from that area doesn’t get much of an international release. And on the evidence of Open Up To Me, that’s a shame.

Maarit (Leea Klemola) has transitioned from male to female and is now trying to find her new place in life, something not made easier by the fact that she’s now estranged from her former wife and daughter. She wants to help people and an unexpected opportunity arises when she almost accidentally poses as a therapist for teacher Sami (Peter Franzén), who’s in the midst of a marital crisis. [Read more…]

Dick: The Documentary (VoD Review)

November 11, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Director: Brian Fender
Running Time: 60 mins
Certificate: NR
Release Date: Out Now

I think it’s fair to say that when director Brian Fender set off to make Dick: The Documentary he didn’t have a budget to rival Avatar or Man Of Steel. But then he didn’t need one, because what he did was take a very simple but surprisingly underexplored idea  – getting men to talk about their penises – and realised that doing something flashy would detract from looking directly at it (if you’ll pardon the expression).

The entire documentary is simply a selection of guys who strip naked, stand in front of a wall and discuss their dicks. We never see any of their faces, which is a smart move as while on the surface it makes the whole thing seem slightly voyeuristic, it ensures that the guys involved are less inhibited as they know that even though it’s being filmed they have anonymity. It also ensures the viewer sticks with the subject at hand and that the participants remain somewhere between individuals and archetypes. [Read more…]

Hopeful Romantic Trailer – Telling a gay-themed story of love and heartbreak through music

November 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hopeful-romantic-pic1Over the weekend the short film Hopeful Romantic made its debut in LA with the cast and crew – including George Takei – heading along to take a look at this unusual fusion of music and the movies.

Writer, star and creator of the short’s music, Matt Zarley, writes, ‘When I first started writing the music for this, I was deeply in love. The original plan was to write a simple little EP of love songs. I was so happy and I wanted everyone to know it. A few weeks into the process, my relationship ended abruptly without warning. I was devastated. It was hard for me to access a lot of positive loving feelings at the time. Out of that temporary writer’s block, I wrote “Constantly”. As I was finishing that song, I began to rethink my project. What was originally gonna be a 5 song EP of love songs suddenly took a turn. I had decided to construct a narrative…a journey with music being the guide.

‘Having had an extensive background in Broadway and musical theatre, it seemed natural to finally merge my two worlds together. Much of what I was writing about was also what I was experiencing in real life. Thru this creative journey, I began to heal myself. In the end, my faith and belief that there’s someone out there for all of us was restored. Holding onto the eternal cliche that “everything happens for a reason” couldn’t hold more truth for me now. I’m convinced that had I not loved as deeply as I did and had I not been so devastated, this project surely wouldn’t have happened. For that, I’m thankful for my once broken heart.’

Take a look at the trailer below. The film is currently being submitted to film festival, so maybe it’ll come to one near you soon. You can find out more on the short’s website. [Read more…]

November 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

romeo-and-romeo-slideBack in July we featured a trailer for Romeo & Romeo, but that was actually made before the movie had shot, to give a taste of what it was all about. Now the film is the the can and the trailer for the feature proper has arrived, which you can take a look at below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In this LGBT thriller, Zak Lawson was a pop star who came out of nowhere, and reached the top of the billboard charts at the age of 14. Years later Zak faces the past head on, finding out burried secrets which test his sobriety.’

Tyler Bradley writes, directs and stars. A 2015 release is planned, but to get a feel for the film take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

The World According to Homophobes Documentary Seeks Funding To Look Into The Minds Of The Anti-Gay

November 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

world-according-to-homophobes-preview-picWhy do homophobes think the way they do? Sometimes it’s difficult to get your head round some of the arguments they make, and it’s easy to just dismiss them as assholes, but is there more to it than that and where does it stem from?

For example many blame religion for homophobia, but is that just a crutch homophobes lean on so they don’t have to challenge their attitudes to something that makes them uncomfortable (after all, most are more than willing to ignore other bits of the bible that don’t fit with modern life)? Is homophobia innate in some people, or is it solely learned behaviour?

This is the subject the feature documentary The World According to Homophobes hopes to look at – as long as it can raise the cash it needs through an IndieGoGo campaign where it’s seeking $19,950 (and no, we don’t know why they didn’t round it up another $50).

Director Emanuelle Schick Garcia says, “WATH is filmed in four countries, exploring the perceived gender roles, superstitions, and sexual experiences of a variety of homophobes seeking to uncover the role shame plays in shaping a homophobic view of sex. For example, we sit in on a sex education lesson in Bogota, Columbia where pupils can be expelled for displaying ‘homosexual behavior’. We’ll speak to Columbian paramilitaries who are a part of the government’s reinsertion program (where they receive reduced sentences if they apologize for their crimes). No paramilitary has ever asked for forgiveness for a homophobic crime, including those involved in the case of the three soldiers who raped a 14 year old girl and then cut off her breasts and left a sign on her body that read ‘I am a lesbian’.

“With the help of one of our advisors, Harvard Medical School Psychology Professor James Gilligan who specializes in the psychology of violent offenders, my hope is to educate people around the world by allowing them to see how their homophobic culture was created and just how dangerous it can be.”

I can already imagine that some may not agree with the film’s ideas about where homophobia stem from, but it’s certainly an interesting subject and a thesis that’s worth putting forward.

Take a look at the trailer below, and if you want to help out, head over to IndieGoGo. [Read more…]

Looking Season 2 Teaser – Catching up with Jonathan Groff, Russell Tovey & co.

November 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

looking-s2-slideA few days ago HBO announced a January 11th premiere for the first episode of Season 2 of Looking, where we’ll go back into gay San Francisco. When we left him, Jonathan Groff’s Patrick was in the middle of a semi-love triangle with Raul Castillo’s Richie and Russell Tovey’s Kevin.

Meanwhile Agustin (Frankie J. Alvarez) and Frank’s (O.T. Fagbenle) relationship had hit the skids while Dom (Murray Bartlett) was trying to figure out his love life while also attempting to open a restaurant.

Now it’s time for our first glimpse of Season 2 with a teaser HBO has just posted and which you can watch below. It’s pretty brief but it’s good to see the boys back. (And if you’re in the UK and wondering, hopefully Looking – Season 2 will start on Sky Atlantic in the UK shortly after it begins in the US). [Read more…]

Gerontophilia (DVD Review)

November 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

Starring: Pier-Gabriel Lajoie, Walter Borden, Katie Boland, Marie-Hélène Thibault, Yardly Kavanagh
Director: Bruce La Bruce
Running Time: 82 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: November 10th 2014 (UK)

Gerontophilia has been described by some as the most controversial film ever made by director Bruce La Bruce. That’s quite impressive for a filmmaker whose previous films have mixed Neo Nazis and gay porn, and zombies and gay porn. There’s not any gay porn at all in this one, so why has it courted controversy? Well it’s purely because it’s about one of the last taboos – relationships with a massive age difference.

Lake (Pier-Gabriel Lajoie) is a young man with a girlfriend who ends up getting a job in the old folk’s home his mother runs. He soon discovers he has a strange fascination with the home’s inhabitants, which he realises is a fetish about older men. He gets close to an 81-year-old called Mr. Peabody (Walter Borden), which soon goes far beyond the boundaries of Lake’s job description. As his relationship with Mr. Peabody grown deeper and more sexual, Lake decides he and his lover are going to get out of the home and head off across Canada, towards the Pacific Ocean. [Read more…]

Matt Damon Confirms He’ll Be Back As Jason Bourne

November 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bourne-ultimatum-matt-damonIn September is was reported that director Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon were in talks to make another Bourne movie. While the sources seemed pretty solid, Damon himself wasn’t saying anything about it, and with talks for a fourth Jason Bourne movie having fallen through before, it wasn’t completely certain.

However now Matt himself has confirmed it, telling E! News, telling them, “Yes, next year [we’ll shoot it]. It’ll be in 2016 when the movie will actually come out. Paul Greengrass is going to do another one and that’s all I ever said. I just needed him to say yes.”

Damon is just about to shoot The Martian for Ridley Scott and he’s also recently signed up for Alexander Payne’s Downsizing, so presumably the new Bourne movie will come after those films.

Previously 2016 was set to get a sequel to The Bourne Legacy starring Jeremy Renner, but when Damon and Greengrass came on board, that film took a backseat. It’s not clear yet whether they’ll bring in Renner to star alongside Damon, or whether we’ll have to wait longer for his return to the franchise.

Heterosexual Jill (VoD Review)

November 9, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Jen McPherson, Michelle Ehlen, Keye Chen, Shaela Cook
Director: Michelle Ehlen
Running Time: 80 mins
Certificate: NR
Release Date: Out Now

Heterosexual Jill is the semi-sequel to Michelle Ehlen’s 2007 film Butch Jamie. That earlier film is a kind of reverse Tootsie, where actress Jamie tries to get work as a butch lesbian and ends up being cast in a male role. That leads to a liaison with Jill, who thinks Jamie is a man.

However you don’t need to have watched Butch Jamie to enjoy Heterosexual Jill. The film catches up with Jill five years on. She’s now decided that she wants to be straight and so has joined an ex-gay group in the hope of leaving thoughts of luscious ladies – and most particularly Jamie – behind. [Read more…]
