Test Trailer – A young dancer experiences gay life in the early days of the AIDS epidemic

June 2, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Set in the free-spirited San Francisco of 1985 in the early years of the AIDS epidemic, Chris Mason Johnson’s Test follows young aspiring dancer Frankie (dancer Scott Marlowe in his acting debut) as he confronts the challenges of being an understudy in a modern dance company where he’s taunted to “dance like a man!”

Frankie embarks on a budding relationship with hunky Todd (Matthew Risch, HBO’s “Looking”), a veteran dancer in the same company and the bad boy to Frankie’s naiveté.As Frankie and Todd’s friendship deepens, they navigate a world of risk, but also a world of hope, humor, visual beauty, and musical relief.

The film features captivating dance sequences especially choreographed for the film by acclaimed US choreographer Sidra Bell. The film won Grand Jury Award — Best Screenplay and Best U.S. Dramatic Feature at Outfest.

Test arrives on VoD platforms in the US on June 6th thanks to Filmbuff and on DVD on June 17th, courtesy of Wolfe Video. [Read more…]

Sheffield Doc/Fest Reveals Its Queer Screen Gay Documentary Strand

June 2, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dog-documentary1The Sheffield Doc/Fest runs from June 7th-12th and includes a wide range of documentaries of all types. That includes its Queer Screen strand, which features seven LGBT-themed docs ranging from The Case Against 8, about the battle over California’s Gay Marriage ban, to the more self-explanatory Peter De Rome Grandfather of Gay Porn.

There’s also the UK premiere of the intriguing sounding The Dog, which is about the true story behind Dog Day Afternoon. The film paints a fascinating picture of John Wojtowicz (the inspiration for Al Pacino’s character in the 1975 film), who talks very frankly and with a lot of humour about the burgeoning gay scene in 1970s New York and the events that led to him robbing a bank in an attempt to pay for his partner’s sex change.

The Dog premieres at Sheffield Doc/Fest on 8th June and then screens at the BFI in London on the 9th. Both screenings will include a Q&A with the directors of the film, Frank Keraudren and Allison Berg, who spent 10 years following Wojtowicz to make the film. You can watch the film’s trailer below.

Other films in the Sheffield Doc/Fest Queer Strand include What Is Left?, Born To Fly, Regarding Susan Sontag and Goodbye Gauley Mountain: An Ecosexual Love Story. Find out more over at the Sheffield Doc/Fest site.

Brothers Episode 1 – The web series about four trans men debuts and is looking for funding

June 2, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In the past few years there have been some big changes for trans people, not least that social and technological changes (not least social media) have made it easier for them to tell their own stories and control their own narratives, rather than it having to be filtered though non-Trans media.

Even so, trans people in fiction still tend to be written, directed and even plated by cisgender people. Brothers is a bit different, as the web series is the brainchild of trans writer/director Emmett Lundberg, with the main four men the show is about, all played by trans guys.

The premiere episode has now been released, which you can watch above. To get the other seven eps of the first season in the can, the show has launched an Indiegogo campaign, with the hope of raising $60,000. You can read a little more about the show below, then head to Indiegogo to help out.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Meet Jack, Davyn, Aiden and Max.

‘Jack, a transgender man living in Brooklyn, has recently started sleeping with a cisgender* man after exclusively dating women his entire adult life. His friend Davyn is on the verge of proposing to his longtime girlfriend, Amy. Aiden, the youngest of the group – pre-testosterone and pre-surgery – is aiming to raise money for his top surgery as the date approaches. Max, the eldest, has been on hormones longer than both Jack and Davyn, but hasn’t had the financial resources to obtain his top surgery.

‘There is a definite lack of trans masculine stories being told; stories that reflect us and the people we know. This is where you come in. BROTHERS follows the daily lives, the ups and down, ins and outs of what it means to live as a transgender individual in today’s urban society.

‘Do you know a Davyn? Are you an Aiden? These are our friends, our teachers, our coworkers, our husbands, our BROTHERS.’

Crush Of The Day: Jamie Dornan Tells Interview He Doesn’t Like His Body, But Shows It Off Anyway

June 2, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jamie-Dornan-Interview13Jamie Dornan is a very handsome man, who’s has success as both an actor and a model. However that doesn’t mean he’s free from body issues – even if he agreed to show a lot of it as Christian Grey in the upcoming 30 Shades Of Grey adaptation.

He tells Interview, “I don’t like my physique. Who does? I was a skinny guy growing up, and I still feel like that same skinny kid.” When I noted that he will be unveiling the torso that has made him famous around the world for a movie-going audience, he again laughs over the absurdity of it all. “I’m still auditioning,” he avers. “I don’t really have choices in the material I get. So I have to make the choices in the way I play the characters. And I’m happy to get a chance to play Christian.”

Luckily for us though, he’s not covering his body up too much in the accompanying photoshoot, and even goes so far as to shove his hand down his pants to get is all thinking about what he’s touching.

The incredibly sexy shots were taken by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott, and you can read the full interview here. However before you do that click on the hot pics below for larger versions. [Read more…]

Lupita Nyong’o & Gwendoline Christie Join Star Wars: Episode VII

June 2, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lupita-nyongoA couple of months ago there were rumours that 12 Years A Slave Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o was being courted to appear in Star Wars: Episode VII, but when the main cast list was announced, her name was missing. However now it’s been officially announced that she’s joining the movie.

She’s not the only one, as Gwendoline Christie, best known for playing Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones, will also appear. Christie will also be seen in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay.

Lucasfilm’s head Kathleen Kennedy commented, “I could not be more excited about Lupita and Gwendoline joining the cast of Episode VII. It’s thrilling to see this extraordinarily talented ensemble taking shape.”

As with the other new cast members, there’s no news on exactly who they will play, but they join fellow newbies Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Andy Serkis, Max Von Sydow. The join original cast members Kenny Baker, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher.

The film is already shooting with JJ Abrams directing. The film is due out towards the end of 2015.

Ruben Fleischer To Helm Ghostbusters 3?

June 2, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ruben-fleischerAs we just reported, Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer was on Marvel’s list to replace Edgar Wright as director of Ant Man, but he apparently ruled himself out so he could spend time with his new baby. However if TheWrap is to be believed, once the little one has grown a bit he may return to the director’s chair for Ghostbusters 3.

If true it would keep Fleischer at Sony, where he made Zombieland and 30 Minutes Of Less (although he helmed Gangster Squad for Warner Bros). Having proven he can mix comedy and the supernatural together, he has apparently been sought out by Ivan Reitman, the director of the first two Ghostbusters movies. Reitman stepped down from the helming the third film himself after the death of Harold Ramis, but he is still onboard as a producer.

It’s believed that the third Ghostbusters films will have space for any of the original cast who wish to return (Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson almost definitely will, Sigourney Weaver is likely to, but Bill Murray is still up in the air), but will largely hand the action over to a younger team of spectre hunters.

The film isn’t likely to shoot for some time, and Sony hasn’t commented on the Fleischer rumours.

Adam McKay Won’t Helm Marvel’s Ant-Man After All

June 2, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

adam-mckayOver the weekend we reported that Adam McKay had entered negotiations to direct Marvel’s Ant-Man, but no sure was he in than he was out again. Variety reports that McKay dropped out of his own volition.

Talks began in earnest on Friday, but by Saturday the Anchorman helmer has decided to depart. He’s since said the reason for the quick in-out is that he loves the comics and was keen on making a Marvel movie, but with numerous other projects in the works, be simply couldn’t devote the time needed for it.

Marvel is apparently desperate to keep the film’s July 2015 release date and so will be trying to fill the void as quickly as possible. It’s been suggested that Rawson Marshall Thurber, known for the likes of Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story and We’re the Millers, and Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer are in contention, but no official talks took place.

Fleischer apparently also rules himself out so that he can spend more time with his wife and newborn baby. Expect more news soon.

Tennessee Queer Trailer – It’s not easy being gay in the boondocks

June 1, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment
