James Franco To Helm Film About Cult Classic ‘Bad’ Movie The Room

February 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

james-francoAlthough it’s reputation is slightly unfair, Tommy Wiseau’s 2003 cult classic The Room has become a bit of a legend as the worst film ever made (it is bad, but there are worse out there).

Now James Franco and his Rabbit Bandini Productions have picked up the rights to the book The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside the Room, which is all about the making of Wiseau’s movie. The Room star Greg Sestero wrote the book alongside journalist Tom Bissell.

Wiseau directed, produced, and self financed the project, which was only released in Southern California during the early 2000s, before word spread that it was something that needed to be seen to be believed. It’s achieves cult status, especially amongst young actors in Hollywood, who realise it’s bad but having a sneaking respect for the fact it got made at all.

James Franco has been a longtime fan and supporter of the movie, and recently reviewed Sestero’s book for Vice Magazine. Franco commented of Tommy Wiseau.”[He is] part vampire, part Hollywood dreamer, part gangster, part Edward D. Wood Jr., and super lonely.” He also described The Disaster Artist as a mix of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Night and The Master

Now Franco will direct and co-produce a film version of the book, with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s Point Grey Productions. Ryan Moody is writing the screenplay. James Franco might also star alongside his brother Dave Franco, but that hasn’t bee firmly decided yet. (Source: Deadline)

February 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

anne-hathawayLast November Reese Witherspoon entered talks to join The Intern, replacing the previously attached Tina Fey. However now Witherspoon has moved on too due to scheduling issues, but they may have found a good replacement as THR reports Anne Hathaway has joined the workplace comedy.

The movie is about the owner (Hathaway) of a fashion website, who starts a community outreach program seeking ‘senior’ interns. She’s thinks that high school and college seniors will apply, however she gets a surprised when she discovers that her intern is a 70-year-old man (Robert De Niro), who proves to be surprising asset to her company.

Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway have already conducted a table read for the director, which is said to have gone extremely well. Nancy Meyers (Something’s Gotta Give) is set to direct.

John Travolta & Salma Hayek Up For A Three Dog Life

February 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

John-TravoltaFor a while it seemed like every other movie had John Travolta in it, but in the last year or two he’s cut back a bit. However he has now signed up for a new role – which should allow his to stretch his acting muscles – as Variety reports that Travolta and Salma Hayek will star in the drama A Three Dog Life.

The movie will be based on the best-selling memoir by Abigail Thomas. It follows Thomas (Hayek) after her husband, Rich (Travolta), gets hit by a car. His brain is shattered and he has no memory of his past life. Subject to hallucinations, rage and terror, he is forced to live in an isolated institution to control the side effects of his near-death accident. In order to be close to her husband, Abigail reinvents her life and moves from New York City to the small country town, with her new family of three dogs.

Nick Guthe (Mini’s First Time) will direct the movie, working from his own screenplay. The movie is currently been sold at the European Film Market.

The Lego Movie Tops The US Box Office, With Monuments Men In Second

February 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lego-movie-poster2In the run up to the release of The Lego Movie, many wondered whether it would work, but as the ecstatic reviews came in, in seemed Warner Bros might have something special. Audiences seem to have agreed as the film has had a huge US opening, taking $69.1 million in its first three days in cinemas.

It’s the second biggest February opening ever after The Passion Of The Christ and one of the best starts for an animated movie ever. With the film receiving huge amounts of praise it should continue to do well over the coming weeks.

The Monuments Men opened in second spot with $22.7 million. It’s the biggest start for a George Clooney directed film, although with a strong marketing campaign some had expected it to do better. It’s about in line with other recent adult dramas though.

The only other new entry in the top 10 was Vampire Academy, which placed seventh with $4.1 million. Like Beautiful Creatures and Mortal Instruments, it’s another film based on a popular young adult book series that many thought might have franchise potential, but with much buzz it’s sunk without trace.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of February 7th-9th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The LEGO Movie $69.1 $69.1
2 The Monuments Men $22.7 $22.7
3 Ride Along $9.3 $105.1
4 Frozen $6.9 $368.6
5 That Awkward Moment $5.4 $16.8
6 Lone Survivor $5.2 $112.5
7 Vampire Academy $4.1 $4.1
8 The Nut Job $3.8 $55.0

February 9, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Bavo-Defurne
In the 1990s Bavo Defurne made his name with a series of gay-themed short films that were successful enough that they were collected together into DVD compilations. However then there was a bit of a gap until he returned in 2012 with his first feature film, North Sea Texas, the story of teenager Pim and his burgeoning sexuality in 1970s Belgium.

It’s a great movie and was such a success in the UK that it’s no being re-released on Double Play Blu-ray and DVD, giving us our first chance to see the movie at home in HD. To mark that release, we caught up with Bavo to talk about the movie and what he’s going to do next. [Read more…]

Sabotage Red-Band Trailer – Arnold Schwarzenegger teams with Sam Worthington for some action

February 8, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s return to the movies probably hasn’t been as big a success as he’s hoped, with lacklustre attendance for the likes of The Last Stand and Escape Plan. However he’ll be hoping that by returning to what looks like a bit of a lean, mean action movie, with a good director (David Ayer – Training Day, End of Watch) and a strong cast including Sam Worthington, Josh Holloway, Terrence Howard and Harold Perrineau, more people will be interested.

Now we can take a look with a red-band trailer for Sabotage.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In “Sabotage”, Arnold Schwarzenegger leads an elite DEA task force that takes on the world’s deadliest drug cartels. When the team successfully executes a high-stakes raid on a cartel safe house, they think their work is done – until, one-by-one, the team members mysteriously start to be eliminated. As the body count rises, everyone is a suspect.’

The movie due out March 28th in the US and May 9th in the UK. [Read more…]

Tom Hardy In Talks For Black Mass, With Johnny Depp Confirmed For The Crime Flick

February 8, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Tom Hardy in Inception

Tom Hardy

A few weeks ago it was revealed that after stepping away from the Whitey Bulger biopic Black Mass last year, Johnny Depp was circling the project again. He got interested again after shooting of the movie was delayed and the director swapped from Barry Levinson to Scott Cooper. Now Deadline reports that Depp has finalised his deal to play the Boston crime.

They also report that Tom Hardy is in talks to play FBI agent John Connolly. Joel Edgerton was previously attached to play Connolly, but he is no longer involved in the project. There’s no news on how close Hardy is to signing.

Mark Mallouk and Jez Butterworth wrote the original script,  adapted from Black Mass: The True Story Of An Unholy Alliance Between The FBI And The Irish Mob by Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neil. The story James ‘Whitey’ Bulger, a major player in organised crime, who became an FBI informant with the help of his childhood friend, the FBI agent John Connolly. Bulger wanted to rid his neighbourhood of Italian mafia elements. While that may sound like a good thing, it actually just strengthened the grip Bulger’s Winter Hill Gang’s grip had on the community.

The FBI eventually double-crossed Bulger, causing the criminal to go into hiding for more than a decade, before he was eventually caught hiding out in California in 2011.

Shooting is is scheduled to begin in May.

Will Smith Won’t Come Back For Independence Day Sequel

February 8, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

will-smith-independence-dayFor years there’s been talk of sequels to Independence Day, which came closer to reality a few months ago when Fox set a release date for a follow-up to Roland Emmerich’s 1996 hit. However there was still no news on whether Will Smith would agree to return as Steven Hiller.

Over the years he’s both suggested he would and that he wouldn’t, as even after it appeared that Fox had decided to move forward, he still hadn’t made up his mind. Now Deadline reports that Smith has ‘pretty much decided’ he won’t be back and has informed 20th Century Fox of that fact.

That’s not the end of the movie though, as knowing Smith was undecided Roland Emmerich had screenwriter James Vanderbilt (White House Down) work on two versions of the script, one which centres on Will Smith’s character, and one that doesn’t (speculation is that it’ll move to his son instead). The director and Dean Devlin wrote the first draft of the script, before turning the writing duties over to Vanderbilt.

Apparently the actor’s decision is still not “set in stone,” but it’s looking unlikely he will be back, even though he could probably do with a big blockbuster, considering Men In Black 3 is his only major success since 2007.

The Independence Day sequel is currently set for release on July 1, 2016, almost exactly 20 years after the first movie.

New Yves Saint Laurent Trailer – Pierre Niney takes on the gay fashion legend

February 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s the year for Yves Saint Laurent in film, with two biopics of the designer likely to be released. One, currently titled Saint Laurent, stars Gaspard Ulliel (Hannibal), Louis Garrel (The Dreamers), Jérémie Renier (In Bruges) and Lea Seydoux (Inglourious Basterds). However before that one we’ll get New Yves Saint Laurent, with Pierre Niney in the title role. A new UK trailer for that film has now been released and you can take a look at a few images from the film below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Paris, 1957. 21 year old Yves is catapulted to international stardom as the successor to Christian Dior who has recently died.  At his first catwalk show he meets Pierre Bergé, who will become his lover and business partner, and begins a relationship that will change his life forever.  Just a few years later however he’s subjected to the public humiliation of being fired.  Refusing to succumb to his critics and self-doubt, he creates the Yves Saint Laurent fashion house and presents the first-ever ‘ready to wear’ collection, shocking the world of couture.

‘YVES SAINT LAURENT follows the designer as he attempts to democratise fashion against the backdrop of Sixties’ liberation, battling his personal demons to build an empire that would be renowned for liberating women all over the world.

‘Directed by Jalil Lespert, starring Pierre Niney as Yves Saint Laurent and Guillaume Gallienne as Pierre Bergé, Charlotte le Bon as Victoire Doutreleau, Laura Smet as Loulou de la Falaise, Marie de Villepin as Betty Catroux and Nikolai Kinski as Karl Largerfeld.

‘YVES SAINT LAURENT features real locations in Paris and Morocco and original clothes from the Yves Saint Laurent haute couture collection archive.’

The film, which is based by Pierre Bergé, will hit UK cinemas on March 21st.
