Land of Storms Trailer – Sexual awakenings and a gay love triangle in Hungary

January 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

From the first few seconds of this trailer, you’d think everyone in Land Of Storms spends their time hitting and slapping one another. However the rest of the promo reveals a less violent and potentially more interesting LGBT-themed movie.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Land of Storms is about the sexual awakening of Szabolcs, a young man who plays on a German soccer team, as does his roommate, Bernard. After an ugly argument, Szabolcs returns to Hungary where he meets Áron and a mutual attraction between the two boys develops. But when Bernard also shows up, a turbulent love triangle develops.’

TLA Releasing should be bringing out the film later this year. [Read more…]

Michael Pena In Talks For Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man

January 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Michael-PenaJust a day after it was announced that Michael Douglas had joined the cast of Ant-Man, another actor is in the mix, as THR reports that Michael Pena is in early talks for the Edgar Wright film.

It’s not known what role American Hustle and End Of Watch’s Pena is up for, but he’ll join Douglas and Paul Rudd in the movie. Douglas is Hank Pym, the inventor of the Ant-Man tech which can shrink him to insect time, while Rudd will be Scott Lang, who becomes the hero after getting hold of Pym’s technology.

The only thing known about Pena’s role is that Marvel was looking for a “tough Latino” who has to be ready for a lot of physical play. The likes of Javier Bardem and Clifton Collins Jr. were also considered.

Girls’ Adam Driver Joins Andrew Garfield In Martin Scorsese’s Silence

January 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

adam-driverAfter the release of each Scorsese movie for the last few years, it’s been said he would make Silence next. The fact he constantly kept putting off making the movie even led to a court case where some of the producers claimed it was taking too long and Scorsese’s hold on the material was preventing them from actually getting the film made.

However now it seems it’s really going to happen (although it has slightly been delayed from when it was going to shoot last summer). Way back in May 2013 Andrew Garfield signed up to star, and now he has some company, as Showbiz411 reports that Girls actor Adam Driver has joined the movie.

Set in the 17th Century, Silence follows Father Rodrigues (Garfield), a Portuguese Jesuit priest who travels to Japan to confront his mentor, after rumours surface that he has abandoned the church. Ken Watanabe will portray Father Rodrigues’ Japanese interpreter. It’s believed Driver will play another Jesuit priest.

Martin Scorsese co-wrote the screenplay alongside Jay Cocks (Gangs of New York), with shooting planned for this summer.

Nick Nolte Is A Late Addition To Darren Aronofsky’s Noah

January 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

nick-nolteYou’d think that with only two and a half months until the release, it would be a little late for Darren Aronofsky to be adding new actors to Noah. However he’s tweeted, ‘just added the legend nick nolte as the watcher samyaza in #noah . long live the nephilim! it was an honor.’

The reason he can come in so late is that Samyaza will be a largely CGI creation, so Nolte will presumably be providing the voice.

The ‘nephilim’ are mentioned in The Bible in Genesis 6:4 where they are described as “sons of God” and “daughters of men.” This has led some to say that they were the offspring of angels/demons and people, although Aronofky’s film takes the other interpretation of them, with Samyaza the leader of the Grigori, a.k.a. Watchers, angels who fell from grace after they were consumed by lust for mortal women.

The film will apparently also follow the legend that the nephilim are giants, and it’s believed Samyaza will have six arms. The nephilim/grigori are an interesting part of Jewish/Christian mysticism that has a long, rich history, but is rarely mentioned today. Mark Margolis was previously linked to the role, although it may be he did the motion capture while Nolte will be the voice. The film is out in March.

Magic: The Gathering Film Planned With X-Men Writer Simon Kinberg Producing

January 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With the Hobbit cleaning up at the box office and Warcraft hoping to hit it big in 2015, Fox has decided it needs to get into the fantasy game with a movie based on a popular franchise – Magic: The Gathering. The studio has signed a deal to bring the popular card game to the big screen, according to THR.

magic-the-gatheringThey’ve also hired Simon Kinberg to produce the adaptation and oversee the development, although no screenwriter or director has been attached yet. Kinberg has written the likes of Sherlock Holmes and X-Men: Days Of Future Past, so he may take on the job himself, but at the moment he’s just down to produce.

Magic: The Gatherin debuted in 1993 and involves a number of different cards featuring wizards, creatures, weapons and spells that have various levels of strength, which players use to defeat one another. The cards themselves, some of which are rarer than others, have become valuable commodities on the collectors’ market.

Hasbro purchased the franchise in 1999 and they going to keep a close eye on development of the movie, with the company’s Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis producing alongside Simon Kinberg. There’s no hint on when we might see the film.

Will Johnny Depp Be Marvel’s Doctor Strange?

January 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Johnny-DeppWhile they had Robert Downey Jr. for Iron Man, Marvel has generally shied away from getting a-list stars to lead its other franchises, not least because they’re keen on keeping the costs down. However, Latino Review reports that Johnny Depp has taken a meeting to discuss the actor taking on the role of Doctor Strange.

Depp is known to be a comic book fan and is apparently very interested in jumping into the Marvel Universe. If he does sign on it would keep him in the Disney family following the likes of Lone Ranger and Pirates of The Caribbean. He is attached to another Pirates movie, but that’s currently trapped in development.

The biggest sticking point at the moment is Depp’s schedule. He’s a busy man with a lot on his plate and a Marvel contract would likely want to tie him into more than one film so he can become a full part of the interconnected superhero universe. It would also require a script rewrite, as it’s apparently been written with someone around 30 in mind, while Depp is 50.

Doctor Strange is a former neurosurgeon, a practicing sorcerer, and serves as the Sorcerer Supreme, the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. Joseph Gordon Levitt was previously attached to the role, but he’s currently concentrating on a different kind on comic book movie, based on Neil Gaiman’s Sandman.

Max Landis Rewriting Houdini Biopic To Add A Touch Of Lovecraft

January 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Max-LandisSony Pictures has spent the last couple of years developing a biopic of Harry Houdini. However it’s still not ready to go in front of the cameras, as Max Landis has come aboard to rewrite the script for the movie.

When it was first announced, Francis Lawrence was attached to direct from a script written by Scott Frank. However the project fell apart when the director left to make The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. At that time the suggestion would be a more relatively conventional telling of Houdini’s story (as opposed to a rival biopic based on a book that says Houdini was a spy), focussing on his attempts to discredit a beautiful spiritualist, although he begin to believe in her.

However this new take on the story will have an H.P. Lovecraft influence.

Landis is best known for writing the 2012 found footage hit Chronicle. He also wrote the script for 20th Century Fox’s Frankenstein, which stars Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy and will be out later this year.

Michael Douglas Joins Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man As Hank Pym

January 13, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

BEHIND-THE-CANDELABRA-michael-douglasWell this explains a few things. When Paul Rudd was announced for Ant-Man, the assumption was that he would be playing Hank Pym, the original incarnation of the character, but Marvel didn’t actually confirm that. Then a couple of weeks ago director Edgar Wright hinted at multiple Ant-Men.

Now we know why, as Marvel has announced that that Michael Douglas will play Pym, which means Rudd will be Scott Lang, who in the comics becomes Ant-Man after stealing Hank’s tech. Variety suggests Pym will be the villain of the movie, but as the official Marvel report doesn’t mention that, it would seems to be a mistake.

Marvel’s Kevin Feige said, ‘With Hank Pym’s rich history in the Marvel Universe, we knew we needed an actor capable of bringing the weight and stature to the role that the character deserves. We felt incredibly relieved when Michael Douglas agreed to step into the part with the charm and fortitude he brings to every character he inhabits, and couldn’t be more excited to see what he will do to bring Hank Pym to life.’

If the movie follows what Wright has previously said, we’ll see some of action of Pym is the 60s, before moving to the present day and seeing the origin of Scott Lang as Ant-Man, and how he ends up teaming up with the older Pym. However no story details have been confirmed. The movie is due out July 2015.

Kristen Wiig & Alexander Skarsgard Up For Diary Of A Teenage Girl

January 13, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

alexander-skarsgard05Kristen Wiig has seemed slightly ambivalent to the potential success Bridesmaids brought her, as while he’s appeared in supporting roles in the likes of Walter Mitty and Anchorman 2, most of her other post Bridesmaids movies have been quirky movies that may have been interesting but were never going to become massive box office hits.

Now she’s signed up for a new movie, as THR reports that she’s signed on Marielle Heller’s coming-of-age tale, Diary Of A Teenage Girl, starring alongside Alexander Skarsgard and M.I. High’s Bel Powley. As Heller’s script came via Sundance Institute Directors and Screenwriters Labs, it may be another quirky project for Wiig.

The movie is ‘based on Phoebe Gloeckner’s graphic novel of the same name and follows a teen artist (Powley) living in San Francisco in the ’70s who attempts to navigate her way through an affair with her mother’s boyfriend.’

The film is has already started shooting in San Francisco.
