For over a year, Mia Wasikowska was set to appear alongside Cate Blanchett in Carol, but now Mia has dropped out. A great replacement has been found though, as Rooney Mara has stepped in to star in the Patricia Highsmith adaptation, according to Deadline.
Carol is based on Highsmith’s novella The Price of Salt, which follows the relationship formed by two vastly different women in the 1950s. One is a girl in her 20s (Mara) working in a department store but dreaming of a more fulfilling life. The other (Blanchett) is a wife trapped in a loveless, moneyed marriage desperate to break free but fearful of losing her daughter in the process.
When the book was published in 1952 it was one of the first to show lesbian relationships as more than just short-term flings, and that is was something that can engender deep feelings.
Todd Haynes (I’m Not There, Far From Heaven) is directing from a screenplay by lesbian playwright Phyllis Nagy. Haynes commented, “We’re over the moon to have Rooney on board. I’ve been a tremendous admirer of her work from the beginning, so the thought of bringing her together with Cate onscreen is thrilling to say the least.”
Filming is set to begin next spring.
