Luke Evans Offered Fast Six Villain Role?

May 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It seems the idea of Brits being villainous in Hollywood movies isn’t dead, as a few months ago it was rumoured Jason Statham was being sought to play the bad guy in Fast & The Furious 6. It appears that didn’t work out, but they still want someone from the UK, as Twitch reports the role has now been offered to Immortals and Three Musketeers actor Luke Evans. It’s still on the level of being a rumour at the moment, but may well turn out to be true.

There’s no news on exactly who Evans would play, although it would play into rumours that after the US, Japan and Mexico, the franchise is heading to Europe for part six.

Evans has seemed poised on major stardom for a year or two now, but hasn’t quite made it yet. However if he gets this part, along with his role in The Hobbit, it could tip him further towards the a-list (and we’ll ignore for the minute whether he’s gone back into the closet or not in order to try and further his Hollywood career). Fast & The Furious 6 is due out May 2013.

Jon Favreau To Star In Identity Thief

May 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In the last few years, Iron Man and its sequel have made Jon Favreau one of the top directors in Hollywood. However he still make occasional trips in front of the camera, such as Couples Retreat and as one of the aliens in John Carter. Now he’s in talks for another acting role, this time in the Universal Pictures comedy Identity Thief.

The movie is about a man (Jason Bateman) whose life is turned upside down when his identity is stolen by a woman (Melissa McCarthy). Variety reports that if the deal goes through, Favreau will play Jason Bateman’s boss. Amanda Peet is also attached to star.

Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses) is directing from a screenplay by Steve Conrad (The Weather Man), with Craig Mazin (The Hangover Part II) providing the most recent rewrite. Shooting is schedule to begin in the new few weeks.

Hunger Games Helmer Gary Ross To Direct Houdini Biopic

May 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Hunger Games director Gary Ross recently backed out of making the sequel, Catching Fire, with one of the stated reasons being that there was another, more lucrative movie he was interested in. Now we know what that film probably is, as THR reports that the director has entered negotiations to direct The Secret Life of Houdini.

There hasn’t been much info on this project since February 2011, when screenwriter Noah Oppenheim signed on to adapt the biography the boon, The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America’s First Superhero by William Kalush and Larry Sloman. The book is partly a traditional biopic of Harry Houdini’s exploits as a world-famous magician, but also alleges he was working as a British spy at the same time. The studio is looking to launch a franchise behind this adaptation, by creating a character they see as a hybrid of Sherlock Holmes and Indiana Jones.

Interestingly Francis Lawrence, who stepped in to direct Catching Fire, is also attached to director a Houdini, although his is at Sony while Ross’ is at Summit.

Pariah Director Dee Rees Sets New Film, This Man This Woman

May 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While Pariah is yet to debut in the UK, its tale of a young, black woman dealing with her identity and sexuality has made huge waves in the US, winning gongs at the Independent Spirit Awards, Sundance and elsewhere.

It’s ensured there’s been a lot of interest in director Dee Rees, and now Variety reports that she’s attached to a new movie, This Man This Woman. Producer Mike Lobell has been developing the movie for 17 years and is now pushing forward with Rees set to helm.

Frederic Raphael (Eyes Wide Shut) wrote the script, which is about a divorced couple who’ve been struck by tragedy  and start to rekindle their relationship when they seated next to one another on a plane.

It’s not the only project Rees is working on, as she’s teamed up with Viola Davis to develop a TV series for HBO, as well as putting together a southern-set thriller called Bolo and a script titled Large Print, about a recently divorced insurance salesman. It’s not clear whether any of these deal explicitly with homosexuality, which was a theme that ran through many of her shorts. Lobell and Rees will now seek high profile talent before trying to get funding for This Man This Woman.

Pierce Brosnan Faces The Coup

May 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Getting caught up in a violent coup would be quite an intense thing to have to deal with, but it would good if you had James Bond there to help you. A few days ago it was revealed that Owen Wilson was attached to a film called The Coup, and now THR reports he’s got some company in the form of Pierce Brosnan.

The Coup is a thriller about an American family, headed by Owen Wilson, who move to Southeast Asia and finds themselves embroiled in a violent coup where rebels mercilessly attack the city. According to producer Steve Alexander, “Having Pierce step into the role of a mysterious and ultimately heroic government operative is the perfect compliment to Owen’s everyman dilemma. We’re thrilled to have him on board.”

If he’s a government operative, does that mean he’ll be playing on his status as an ex-007? John Erick Dowdle (Devil, Quarantine) will direct from a script he co-wrote with his brother Drew. Filming will begin in October in Southeast Asia.

Michelle Rodriguez Returns For Machete Kills & Fast & The Furious 6

May 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Actress Michelle Rodriguez is certainly going to be keeping fit this summer in sequels, as she’s signed deals to star in the high-octane madness of both The Fast and the Furious 6 and Machete Kills, according to Variety.

The actress made a cameo appearance as Letty during the end-credit scene in Fast Five, and she returns as a main cast member in this new installment. Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, and Dwayne Johnson are also confirmed for this sequel. Haywire star Gina Carano is also in talks to join the cast.

Michelle will also reprise her role as Luz from Machete in director Robert Rodriguez’s sequel. Danny Trejo is back as the title character, and we reported last week that Mel Gibson is in talks to portray the villain. Rodriguez start shooting Machete Kills later this month in Austin, Texas, and will move right to The Fast and the Furious 6, which begins production in Europe next month.

Both movies are set for release next summer.

Sharlto Copley On For Open Grave & Confirmed As Oldboy Villain

May 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For someone who had no intention of being an actor at the time of District 9, Sharlto Copley has built quite a career for himself. A couple weeks ago we reported that he was in talks to play the villain in Spike Lee’s remake of Oldboy.

He’s now been confirmed to play that role and according to Deadline has also finalised a deal to star in Open Grave for director Gonzalo López-Gallego (Apollo 18).

In Oldboy, Copley will play the villainous Adrian Pryce, a billionaire who releases Joe Douchett (Josh Brolin) after keeping him in captivity for several years, and then has to deal with the man’s revenge. Elizabeth Olsen also stars as a case worker who helps Joe figure out his past.

Open Grave has been in development since 2006, with Gonzalo López-Gallego directing from a screenplay by Chris Borey and Eddie Borey. The movie centres on a man who wakes up surrounded by dead bodies and has no idea how he got there. He starts to have bizarre, murderous flashbacks, and begins to think the he is the killer.

It isn’t known when production will begin on either of these projects.

Elijah Wood Signs On For Grand Piano

May 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Elijah Wood has had difficulty fully capitalising on the success he had with Lord Of The Rings, but he’s still around and has now signed on to star in the upcoming indie action-thriller Grand Piano for director Eugenio Mira.

The rather OTT plot centres on a concert pianist (Wood) who returns after a five-year break from performing. However, when he sits down at the piano, he sees a menacing note on his sheet music. He must give the performance of a lifetime or else a mysterious madman will kill him and his wife! The project was described as Speed at a piano.

Production will begin later this summer at Ciudad de la Luz Studios in Alicante, Spain, with another week of shooting scheduled to take place in Chicago. (Source: THR)

Chariots Of Fire Director Helming Midnight Sun

May 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Hugh Hudson hasn’t made a fiction feature since 2000 with I Dreamed Of Africa, but with a re-release due for Chariots Of Fire and lots of interest in that movie due to the London Olympics, he’s decided it’s time to come out of semi-retirement for Midnight Sun.

The film is a family adventure film described as being in the vein of Free Willy and Dolphin Tale, set amongst the ice fields of Northern Canada. The hero is a young boy, Luke, who defies the dangerous elements of nature to reunite an abandoned polar bear cub with its mother. Luke is aided by Muktuk, a half Inuit and half Canadian, who knows the terrain where polar bears live like the back of his hand. But they are soon separated on the floating ice of the high Arctic, and Luke and the cub are left to protect themselves from bear attacks, giant icebergs, and vicious windstorms.

BAFTA and Emmy award-winning cinematographer Doug Allan will lens the wildlife and natural elements of the picture, with production design by Andrew Sanders (Chariots of Fire, The Last Temptation of Christ). The film will start shooting in November 2012, with locations in the Canadian Arctic and Manitoba.

Tom Cruise Attached To Van Helsing Remake

May 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Universal Pictures has signed a two-year first-look production deal with Mission: Impossible III, Transformers & Star Trek writing/producing teams in the entertainment industry, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, and their K/O Paper Products banner.

The duo will kick off their new relationship with Universal by reimagining titles from the studio’s library including The Mummy and Van Helsing, with Tom Cruise already attached to the latter. There’s very little info on what direction they’re planning to take either The Mummy of Van Helsing, although it’s likely to be a grittier take than the most recent version.

“We’re thrilled to call Universal Pictures our home,” said Kurtzman and Orci. “They really understand the importance of building a strong creative team and giving our shared projects their full support. We’re proud to start making movies that will live as part of Universal’s enduring legacy.”

A Few Best Men Trailer – Kevin Bishop & Kris Marshall hang out with Olivia Newton John!

May 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert, we didn’t hear a huge amount from director Stephan Elliot, partly because he nearly died in a skiing accident. However he returned a couple of years ago with the British period comedy, Easy Virtue. Now he’s helmed a full-on Anglo-Australian production with A Few Best Man. When David (Xavier Samuel) journeys to Australia to marry the love of his life, Mia, he invites his three best mates – Graham (Kevin Bishop), Luke (Tim Draxl) and Tom (Kris Marshall) – to travel with him. Having barely met his bride-to-be, they aren’t too impressed at the thought of losing their best friend to married life on the other side of the world but resolve to give him a send-off to remember. After a final carnage-filled stag night the big day arrives and the trio of ill-prepared best men end up giving a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘for better or worse’ as a chaos-filled wedding, complete with a deranged drug dealer, a cross-dressed sheep, a coked-up mother-in-law (Olivia Newton John) and possibly the most disastrous speech of all time, threaten to derail the marriage before it’s even begun! The movie hits UK cinemas August 31st.

The Avengers New York Tribeca Screening Red Carpet Video

May 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Stars from the summer’s most hotly anticipated film celebrated imagination at the New York premiere of ‘The Avengers’. Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Cobie Smulders and Tom Hiddleston reflected on their experience of making the film and bringing the comic book series to the big screen. Bombay Sapphire announces the launch of their Imagination Series Filmmakers Competition at Tribeca Film Festival this week, hosting the exclusive after-parties of Emily Blunt’s ‘Your Sister’s Sister’, Chris Rock’s ‘2 Days In New York’ and the closing premiere, summer blockbuster ‘The Avengers’.

To celebrate filmmakers around the world, Bombay Sapphire, in association with Tribeca Film Festival, is offering budding filmmakers the chance to make their own short film, using their imagination to interpret Oscar-winner Geoffrey Fletcher’s short film script. From the 26th of April, budding filmmakers can view the script at www.imaginationseries.com and can submit their interpretation of the Geoffrey’s script on this site from the 8th of May 2012. A global judging panel, including Geoffrey Fletcher and industry leaders put together by the Tribeca Film Festival, will select five winners from a shortlist of entries who will then go on to produce and direct their own individual films and view these at a star-studded international premiere early 2013.
