With Instinct Alan Cumming Will Play The First Gay Lead In A US Network Drama

January 8, 2018 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

In the past few years there have been a few gay lead characters in comedy series on shows aired by the major US networks, and quite a few more – both comedies and dramas – that have had LGBT supporting characters. However, there’s never been a drama with a gay lead character – until now, that is.

Alan Cumming is due to be the first when Instinct starts airing on CBS in the States.

He’s set to play Dr. Dylan Reinhart ‘a gifted author and university professor living a quiet life teaching psychopathic behavior to packed classes of adoring students. But when top NYPD detective Lizzie Needham (Bojana Novakovic) appeals to him to help her catch a serial murderer who is using Dylan’s first book as a tutorial, Dylan is compelled by the case, comes out of retirement and taps into his old skill set. Though Dylan and Lizzie initially clash, when it comes to catching killers, they realize they will make an ideal team if they both trust their instincts.’

Cumming has been keen to praise CBS for taking a chance on a gay lead, especially in the Trump era. Deadline reports that at a TCA Winter Tour event, he said, “I applaud everyone at CBS for having the courage to put that on, in the climate that might not be the best time to do it… the President is actively condoning, by his silence, violence and persecution against the LGBT community.”

He adds, “I think it’s the perfect time and needs to be done.. it’s all that more important we should have a character with a healthy same-sex marriage.”

However, he was also keen to let it be known that, “I’m also conscious of the fact that, most times, when we see gay characters on American television, their gayness is the prime thing.” However he feels that with Instinct it’s “refreshing” that Reinhart’s sexuality is “the fourth or fifth most interesting thing about the character.”

The show is yet to receive an airdate, but is expected to debut this Spring or Summer. It’s not known yet if we’ll see it in the UK. [Read more…]

After Louie Trailer – Alan Cumming gets an unexpected younger lover in the gay-themed movie

June 20, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We really liked After Louie when we caught it a few months ago at the BFI Flare London LGBT Film Festival. Now a trailer for the movie has arrived, so you can get a better taste for the film.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘After Louie follows Sam (Alan Cumming), an artist and activist from ACT UP who lived through the early years of HIV/AIDS — a man scarred and still struggling with survivor’s guilt. Cemented into an oppressive past, he is bewildered by a younger generation of carefree gay men with their uninhibited use of social media, sexting, and seeming political indifference. But when he meets the seductive young Braeden (Zachary Booth) at a bar late one night, their pants quickly come down and, eventually, so does Sam’s ossified guard. As the pair become increasingly intimate, an intergenerational relationship blossoms between them-one capable of reawakening Sam’s artistic soul and reviving his wilted heart.’

After Louie (BFI Flare Review) – AIDS, generational changes, gay life & Alan Cumming

March 21, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Alan Cumming, Patrick Breen, Sarita Choudhury, Wilson Cruz, Zachary Booth
Director: Vincent Gagliostro
Running Time: 100 mins
Certificate: NR

After Louie is one of the higher profile titles at this year’s BFI Flare London LGBT Film Festival – largely because it stars Alan Cumming. He plays Sam, an artist working on a documentary about his friend, William, who died during the AIDS crisis. However, he discovers that few people are that interested in his project.

He meets the much younger Braeden (Zachary Booth), initially assuming the young man must be a rent boy, and so pays him for sex. Braeden also has a boyfriend, but starts to see more of Sam. They start to challenge each other’s assumption, with Sam angry that the younger generation don’t seem to care about the AIDS crisis and the battle against heteronormative culture he and his friends engaged in. Braeden meanwhile shows him that his generation have a very different experience of the world – and HIV – and that while Sam’s generation’s battles helped pave the way for that, it’s impossible for younger people to truly comprehend what it was like to watch so many people die amidst a society that didn’t care and in many cases attacked them. Hurricane Bianca Trailer – Bianca Del Rio goes a little bit Tootise in the gay-themed film

August 24, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Hurricane-Bianca-slideBianca Del Rio has used her status as a winner of Rupaul’s Drag Race to go on to bigger and better things, and that includes starring in her own star-studded movie, Hurricane Bianca. Now the trailer has arrived, having debuted over at Buzzfeed.

Things are a little bit Tootsie, with Bianca’s non-drag persona Roy Haylock starring as a teacher in Texas, who gets fired when it’s discovered he has a gay dating profile. It’s then time for a bit of revenge, with Roy returning to the school as the outrageous Bianca, who’s out to wreak a little havoc.

The great cast also includes Rachel Dratch, Alan Cumming, RuPaul, Margaret Cho, and Drag Race’s Willam Belli, Shangela, and Alyssa Edwards. There’ll be three special US cinemas screenings of the film in New York on Sept. 19th, San Fransisco on Sept. 20th , and LA on Sept. 21, followed by a Q&A with Bianca and director Matt Kugelman. It’ll then receive a worldwide digital release via Wolfe On Demand on September 23rd, and a US DVD release in October.

Alan Cumming to Star in New LGBT Film, After Louie, Which Is Looking For Your Help

May 8, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

alan-cummingIt’s been announced that bisexual actor and Tony winner Alan Cumming is attached to star in a new LGBT-themed movie from lifelong activist and artist, Vincent Gagliostro, who has been sited by New York Magazine as one of the six most influential players in the gay community during the 80s and 90s AIDS crisis.

However, to get it to the screen it needs your help, as a Kickstarter is now running through June 2nd, in the hope of raising $72,500. After Louie explores the contradictions of modern gay life and history through Sam (Cumming), a man desperate to understand how he and his community got to where they are today. The movie also Justin Vivian Bond (Shortbus, Kiki and Herb: Live at the Knitting Factory), Zachary Booth (Damages, Keep The Lights On), David Drake (The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me), and NYC icon, Joey Arias.

Many important figure-heads in the NYC artistic community are speaking up for the film, including author and playwright, Larry Kramer who says, “this move needs to be made.” Pulitzer Prize-Winning author Michael Cunningham comments, “Vincent Gagliostro is not only enormously gifted, he’s also been a radical, fearless and compassionate voice for decades, speaking for countless people whose stories would otherwise go undeard.”

Here’s the synopsis: ‘After Louie explores the contradictions of modern gay life and history through Sam (ALAN CUMMING), a man desperate to understand how he and his community got to where they are today. As an AIDS activist and member of ACT UP in the 1980s and 90s, Sam witnessed the deaths of too many friends and lovers. Battle-wounded and struggling with survivor’s guilt, Sam now resents the complacency of his former comrades and derides what he sees as the younger generation’s indifference to the politics of sex, and of death.

‘An unexpected intimacy with a much younger man, Braeden (ZACHARY BOOTH), challenges Sam’s understanding of contemporary gay life. Through this unconventional romance, he is forced to deal with the trauma that so informs his past, their present, and an unknown future.’

Vincent Gagliostro comments, “My film After Louie is a portrait of what happened to us — the generation who endured the AIDS epidemic, a generation whose shared history continues to haunt us. In confronting the end of a traumatic era and provoking a conversation between generations, I dare us to dream of a new and vibrant future, again. After Louie will be a testament to the joys of the fully lived life and the inseparability of art and living.”

If you want to help get the movie made, watch the crowdfunding video below and then head over to Kickstarter. [Read more…]

Alan Cumming Is Planning A TV Series About A Gay New York Restaurateur

September 28, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

alan-cummingFor the last few years Alan Cumming has been extremely good on The Good Wife. Indeed he’s been a little too good, as he’s so talented it’s felt a little silly that he’s been playing a seond fiddle character. Now though it looks like the bisexual Scottish actor might be getting a show of his own, as Deadline reports that US TV network Showtime has signed on to help him develop his passion project – a series about gay New York restaurateur, Florent Morelle.

Described as a half-hour dark comedy project, the show is currently titled Florent, and will be ‘Inspired by the true story of Morellet, who in the early ’80s opened a restaurant in NY’s wild and woolly Meatpacking District, Florent will explore the light and dark of that time, as well as the craziness of a place that become a destination for everyone from NY’s literati to the neighborhood hookers and hustlers, the NYPD, and the burgeoning LGBT community — all through the eyes of Florent, played by Cumming (with advice from the real restaurateur himself). Morellet ran his idiosyncratic French diner for 23 years, until his landlord drastically increased his rent.’

The series was previously set up at The Sundance Channel, but Showtime has now taken it over. Cumming is still playing Eli Gold in The Good Wife, and is currently contracted for the whole of upcoming season. However if Florent moves forward, he will segue over to that after his commitment to the legal show is over.

Maladies Trailer – James Franco turns troubled actor in a new movie

February 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

James Franco is a very busy man, writing, directing and/or starring in more movies than most actors could humanly fit in. Now the trailer for a new one has arrived, Maladies, where he plays a troubled actor.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A daring new film from internationally acclaimed multimedia artist Carter, Maladies charts the struggles of an unstable former soap opera star (James Franco) in 1960’s New York as he tries to restart his floundering creative career. Hoping to find clarity and new purpose as a writer, he holes up with his eccentric sister at the seaside home of their best friend (Catherine Keener). But as he disappears further into his own mind, reality begins to slip through his grasp. Featuring an award-winning ensemble, including David Straithairn and Alan Cumming, Maladies is a heartfelt but defiantly unconventional exploration of the creative mind.’

It’s out in the US in March.

Any Day Now (DVD)

January 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Alan Cumming, Garret Dillahunt, Isaac Levya, Frances Fisher, Gregg Henry
Director: Travis Fine
Running Time: 97 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: January 13th 2014 (UK)

To many people Alan Cumming is the guy who pops up in supporting roles in the likes of The Good Wife, Goldeneye and X-Men 2. Some have never quite got past him as an insanely camp air steward in the Scottish sitcom The High Life. However he’s far more than that, as the fact he has both a Tony and an Olivier award attests. Here he gets to take centre stage opposite Raising Hope’s Garret Dillahunt in a moving and extremely well made movie.

It’s the 1970s and Cumming is Rudy Donatello, an out and proud gay man who performs in a drag act. His life takes an unexpected turn when he discovers that the kid living next door, Marco (Isaac Levya), has been abandoned by his junkie mother. [Read more…]

Sir Billi (DVD)

September 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Sean Connery, Alan Cumming, Ruby Wax, Miriam Margolyes
Director: Sascha Hartmann
Running Time: 75 mins
Certificate: U
Release Date: September 16th 2013

After having a hideous time on the set of The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Sean Connery said he’d never make a movie again. However he’s come out of retirement to lend his voice to Sir Billi, presumably attracted by the fact that this is Scotland’s first feature-length animated movie (Connery is, after all, determined to be the most Scottish person in the world, despite the fact he hasn’t lived there for decades). He might also have liked the fact it’s a film about an octogenarian. [Read more…]
