I, Frankenstein Trailer – Aaron Eckhart is all sewn together and supernatural

October 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

This is one of those trailers that’s so busy trying to look cool that it’s doesn’t realise it actually looks a bit daft. That’s doesn’t mean the film can’t be fun, as long as a portentous tone doesn’t rob it on entertainment value.

The film is based on Kevin Grevioux’s graphic novel of the same name about Adam Frankenstein (Aaron Eckhart), the creation of Dr. Frankenstein, who is still alive centuries after his ‘birth’. Adam is hunted down by a clan of demons who want to learn Adam’s secret in order to reanimate deceased demons and start a new army.

Miranda Otto, Jai Courtney, Bill Nighy and Aden Young also star.

The release date has been slipping from February 2013 to September 2013 and now it’s due next January. [Read more…]

Bill Nighy, Paddy Considine & Dominic West Take On Gay Miners’ Strike Film, Pride

September 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Paddy-ConsidineIn the past, it was quite common for groups of people protesting about different things to come to the aid of each other. Now Matthew Warchus, who’s best known as a theatre director, is planning a movie called Pride about a group of gay activists called ‘Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners’, who decide to raise money to help the families of British miners who were striking in the summer of 1984.

The cast is fast coming together, with Bill Nighy, Dominic West, Imelda Staunton, Paddy Considine & Andrew Scott (Sherlock’s Moriarty), set to star.

The film follows the activists, who after raising the cash, discovers the National Union Of Miners is rather embarrased to accept money from a bunch of queer. Not put off, they decide to travel to a Welsh mining community to hand out the cash personally.

Gay Star News quotes Warchus as saying, “This was a script I just couldn’t say no to. It made me laugh out loud, it surprised and delighted me at every turn, and it ultimately moved me to tears. It’s a truly affirming and inspiring story, funny, honest and moving, and by the end of it you want to punch the air and cheer.”

Stephen Beresford wrote the script, with the current plan being to start shooting next month in London and Wales. There’s no news on exactly who the actors will play.

New Jack The Giant Slayer Trailer – Take a look at Bryan Singer’s fairytale fantasy

November 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s taken a long time to get Jack The Giant Slayer to the screen, largely due to the special effects and creation of the fairy tale world, which saw the shooting delayed and then the film’s initial June 2012 release date slipping. However Bryan Singer’s film is now incoming, with a March 22nd 2013 release date set and a new, fantastical trailer having popped up online.

The trailer certainly suggests this is going to be an overtly family friendly affair, with liberal doses of comedy and a tone that suggests this won’t have the darkness of some recent fantasy movies. The film is a liberal retelling of the classic Jack & The Beanstalk tale, in which the long-standing peace between men and giants is threatened, as a young farmer (Nicholas Hoult) leads an expedition into the giants’ kingdom in hopes of rescuing a kidnapped princess.

Alongside Hoult, the likes of Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Bill Nighy and Ian McShane star. To be honest we’re not entirely convinced by this trailer, as it seems a little silly, but we’ll reserve judgement.

How does Santa deliver presents to all the children of the world in one night? It’s a conundrum we’ve all pondered and while spoilsport scientists have tried to say it’s impossible as he’d have to go faster than the speed of light, the fact is he can do because he’s magic. However he might also have a lot of technology on his side, which is what Arthur Christmas suggests. [Read more…]

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (DVD)

June 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Dev Patel, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson
Director: John Madden
Running Time: 118 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: June 25th, 2012

Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Celia Imrie, Penelope Wilton, Dev Patel, Ronald Pickup – if you assemble a cast like that, you could get them to read the phone book and it would be entertaining. It would be tough to get them to make something that wasn’t at least worth a look, and thankfully although The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a relatively slight tale, it’s never less than charming.

Dench, Smith, Nighty, Wilkinson, Imrie, Wilton and Pickup play a group of aging Brits, who for one reason and another respond to an advert for The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. The ad promises an Indian idyll where retirees can live out their days in luxury that brings to mind the days of the Raj. After a rather problematic journey to the hotel, the reality turns out to be rather different than what was promised, with the hotel falling to bits and little of the advertised luxury. [Read more…]

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (Cinema)

February 20, 2012 By Stephen Sclater Leave a Comment

Starring: Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Penelope Wilton, Celia Imrie, Tom Wilkinson
Director: John Madden
Running Time: 123 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: February 24th, 2012

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel doesn’t have the catchiest title I have ever heard. However, based on the novel by Deborah Moggach, the film stars the ‘crème de la crème’ of our favourite geriatric British film and TV actors, and is directed by John Madden (Shakespeare In love, Mrs Brown and Captain Corelli’s Mandolin).

After the phenomenal success of Slumdog Millionaire, it was inevitable that at some point mainstream British cinema would be return to India. The premise of the film is that seven elderly people decide to up-sticks from the UK and go to India, moving into a hotel for the ‘elderly and beautiful’. However it doesn’t quite live up to the image of the photoshopped promos! [Read more…]

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel Trailer – Dench, Smith & co. go to India

December 6, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Video: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel trailerWith a cast including Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson, Penelope Wilton, Celia Imrie and Ronald Pickup, you’d expect something ridiculously classy and highbrow, but The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel seems a whole lot more fun than that. Indeed it seems kind of like Carry On Abroad but with loads of Oscar winners. For a disparate group of English pensioners, retirement takes an unconventional turn when they are enticed by The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, a seemingly luxurious sanctuary for ‘the elderly and beautiful’ in Jaipur, India. On arrival, they discover that the hotel falls somewhat short of the idyll promised in the brochure, but they are gradually won over by the ever-optimistic young manager Sonny (Dev Patel), and embark on a new adventure, finding that life can begin again when you let go of the past. The film hits cinemas next February.
