Patrick Stewart Sees The Funny Side After Being Mistakenly Outed

February 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

patrick-stewart-ian-mckellenIt seems if you have a GBF (gay best friend), some people are going to think you’re gay yourself. It’s something Ian McKellen’s bestie, Patrick Stewart, has just discovered after he was mistakenly outed by the Guardian earlier this week.

Talking about Ellen Page coming out, the article initially read, ‘Some gay people, such as Sir Patrick Stewart, think Page’s coming out speech is newsworthy because a high-profile and surprisingly politically aware young actress has decided not to play by the rules that so many closeted Hollywood actors are advised to follow if they are to enjoy mainstream success.’

It was later amended to read, ‘Some people, such as Sir Patrick Stewart, think Page’s coming out speech is newsworthy.’ However by then many had already seen it, but it turns out Patrick isn’t too worried.

He tweeted, ‘Well, @guardian it makes for a nice change…at least I didn’t wake up to the internet telling me I was dead again.’

He added .@Poynter But @guardian I have, like, five or even SEVEN hetero friends and we totally drink beer and eat lots of chicken wings!’

It was also enough to make another Enterprise captain envious, with William Shatner tweeting ‘@SirPatStew @guardian I never get that kind of coverage! I’m jealous!’

Has Ian McKellan Accidentally Outed Lee Pace & Another Hobbit Co-Star?

January 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Lee Pace

Lee Pace

It seemed Ian McKellen thought he was making a fairly innocuous comment. He made it back in 2012 to the German magazine Brash, where he talked about how far gay actors have come in the last 10 year.

He compared the lack of openly gay actor in Lord Of The Rings to The Hobbit, saying “Look only at how many gay actors are in Hobbit—two of the dwarves, along with Luke Evans, Stephen Fry and Lee Pace… In Lord of the Rings  I was the only one, apart from my make-up artist and a guy in wardrobe team. That is progress, or what?”

No one particularly noticed the comment at the time, but now it’s attracting a bit of attention, as McKellen may have accidentally outed a few people. While Stephen Fry is indeed out and proud, Evans used to be out but has now gone back inside again (not coincidentally he shut up about his sexuality when his career started taking off). Lee Pace meanwhile has never officially been out at all, despite a number of rumours. However McKellen seems pretty sure that he’s gay.

As for ‘two of the dwarfs’, the only openly gay one of their number is Adam Brown (who plays Ori). The rediscovered comment from Sir has led to speculation the other dwarf is Richard Armitage (Thorin), who’s previously been subject to rumours he’s dating Pace. However there’s no actual evidence of that, so we’ll leave you to speculate on who it might be.

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug (Cinema)

December 11, 2013 By Stephen Sclater Leave a Comment

Starring: Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Orlando Bloom, Benedict Cumberbatch
Director: Peter Jackson
Running Time: 161
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: December 13th 2013

After the massive success of Lord Of The Rings, The Hobbit: An unexpected Journey wasn’t as well received by fans and critics. This was due to running time, the lengthy introduction to all the new characters, as well as Peter Jackson’s controversial decision to film and project it at 48fps (which many complained gave it a video feel).

So has Jackson redeemed himself with the diehard fans of Middle Earth with part two of the Hobbit trilogy? Yes, Smaug is The Two Towers compared to the slower Fellowship of the Ring. [Read more…]

As we were promised, a new trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has arrived and it certainly looks pretty, showing of the visuals and action, as well as the return of old friends like Legolas and new character played by actors such as Evangeline Lily, Lee Pace and Luke Evans – the last two of which you can see in new banners above.

There’s also a few giant spider to look out for. But once again the dragon Smaug is only glimpsed in bits and pieces.

Ian McKellen To Play A Retired Sherlock Holmes In A Slight Trick of the Mind

September 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ian-mckellen-slideIan McKellen is already the older version of Michael Fassbender in the X-Men franchise, and now he’s gonna be an older Benedict Cumberbatch and Robert Downey Jr., as he’s signed up to play a retired Sherlock Holmes in A Slight Trick of the Mind.

The actor will play a retired Sherlock Holmes, who in 1947 is retired and lives in a sleepy Sussex village with his housekeeper and her amateur-sleuthing son. But far from living out a peaceful retirement, he is haunted by an unsolved case from fifty years ago. He remembers only fragments: a confrontation with an angry husband, a secret bond with his beautiful but unstable wife.

With his legendary mental powers on the wane, and without his old sidekick Watson, Holmes is faced with the toughest case of his life – a case that might finally reveal to him the mysteries of the human heart.

Jeffrey Hatcher (The Duchess) wrote the screenplay adaptation based on Mitch Cullin’s novel. The film will reunite McKellen with director Bill Condon, who directed the actor to an Oscar nomination in Gods & Monsters.

Ian McKellen Expresses Solidarity With Russian LGBTs

August 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ian McKellen shows support for LGBT Russians
News of increasingly anti-gay attitudes and problems emerging from Russia is emerging on a seemingly daily basis – the latest being reports that a gay teen kidnapped and tortured by neo-Nazis has died from his injuries. The issues have undoubtedly intensified with the signing of a law banning ‘promotion of non-traditional relationships’, which seems to have been taken by homophobes to mean it’s now open season on LGBT people.

Ian McKellen has now stepped forwards to express his solidarity with Russian LGBT people, showing his support in the photo above, which was taken after a performance of Harold Pinter’s No Man’s Land, which he is currently starring in at the Berkeley Rep in California, alongside friends and fellow X-Men star, Sir Patrick Stewart.

The pic was the result of a meeting with blogger Michael Petrelis, who says, ‘I went to the theater with a rainbow flag and four signs, hoping Sir Ian would be amenable to a photo-op, one that might send a clear message to the Russian LGBT people. He and I spoke briefly about the plight of LGBT citizens of Russia, and Sir Ian expressed his solidarity with them and deplored the escalating violence against our community over there.’

McKellen then posed for the pic above, expressing his support for gay Russians.

We can all hope that the situation for gay Russians improves quickly, and that perhaps with the international spotlight being shone on the issue and Russia due to host the Winter Olympics in a few months time (with some already agitating for a boycott over fears for LGBT athletes as the games), something can be done to improve the situation.

First X-Men: Days Of Future Past Posters Mix Xaviers & Magnetos Old & Young

July 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

x-men-days-of-future-past-poster1
After its presentation at Comic-Con at the weekend, X-Men: Days Of Future Past has given us another treat with the first two posters for the movie, which mix up Magneto and Professor Xaviers old and young, showing up Patrick Stewart, James McAvoy, Ian McKellen and James McAvoy.

It’s certainly well done and makes you believe the younger actors really could grow up to be their elders selves in the movie.

In the film, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine travels back a bleak, dystopian future where mutants have been rounded up and are monitored by the robotic sentinels. An older Xavier and Magneto (Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen), send him to the 1970s to convince their younger selves (James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender) that they must do something to prevent this future from ever happening.

It’s out summer 2014. (Posters via EW)
