Until recently the prospect of Sean Penn starring in a movie meant that while the film was likely to be a little bit tedious, he would be extremely good in it and the movie would be worth a watch. However, with Gangster Squad, Walter Mitty and The Gunman, he seems to be trying his hand at more standard fare.
Unfortunately though, all the Gunman offers is more of what we’ve seen 1,000 times before. In fact, I almost wonder if in the pact actors make with Hollywood, it includes a clause that makes it compulsory for them to star in at least one movie about an assassin having an existential crisis. The Pirates certainly have a formula – Jack Sparrow, young guy, young woman and a supernatural villain. It doesn’t look like they’ll be breaking away from that with the fifth film, as Johnny Depp will once again be Jack, Brenton Thwaites is the young guy, and Javier Bardem will be a bad guy ghost.
Sean Penn is known for being picky and a bit idiosyncratic with his movie roles, generally avoiding typical Hollywood fare, but there’s no doubt The Gunman doesn’t sound like anything particularly unusual. Let’s hope the great cast – which includes Javier Bardem, Idris Elba, Ray Winstone and Mark Rylance – can raise it above the generic.
The Gunman certainly has a great cast, led by Sean Penn alongside Javier Bardem, Idris Elba, Ray Winstone and Mark Rylance. Indeed getting such a cast of luminaries together is surprising as the plot makes it sound like pretty standard stuff – hopefully the film itself will offer something more.
After the release of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, it was said Disney wanted to make another sequel as soon as it possibly could. However the project has been continually pushed back.

With several Peter Pan based prequels in the works at various studios, it seems Warner Bros. is trying to move fast on its film, Pan, in order to get to cinemas first. Just a few days ago, Hanna director Joe Wright signed onto helm Pan. That’s now followed by the news that Javier Bardem is in talks to play the lead villain, according to 
Brad Pitt is making quite a big fashion statement in the new image above from Ridley Scott’s The Counsellor. Indeed OTT fashion seems to be one of the movie’s big things, as evidence from the pics below, which include a rather cute Cameron Diaz and Javier Bardem looking, umm, unique.
