X-Men: Apocalypse (Cinema Review)

May 19, 2016 By BigGayPictureShow Leave a Comment

Starring: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Oscar Isaac
Director: Bryan Singer
Running Time: 142 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: 20th May 2016 (UK)

I’ve been a big fan of the X-Men ever since watching the Saturday morning cartoons many years ago, and I have been waiting for the films to introduce Apocalypse and do justice to one of his storylines. X-Men (2000) is seen as the birth of the modern comic book movie and still holds up today as a great film. Seven franchise entries later (excluding Deadpool (2016)) and it’s no surprise that the films have varied in quality.

X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) was great as it combined the worlds of the original trilogy and the X-Men: First Class (2011), with older and younger actors portraying different versions of their characters and a time traveling plot with peril for both mutants and humans. But it did lose me with the plastic sentinels with plastic bullets, and presumably plastic processors and wires. Also the ending didn’t make much sense, until you realised that it combined two separate timelines and ended up with four. [Read more…]

Final X-Men: Apocalypse Trailer – Can a mutant destroy the entire world?

April 25, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

x-men-apocalypse-slideIn just a few weeks the mutants are returning and facing the awesome power of Apocalypse – an ancient mutant who is so powerful he has been worshipped as a god, and who isn’t impressed with the modern world. The final trailer is here to suggest this is going to be pretty epic.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Following the critically acclaimed global smash hit X-Men: Days of Future Past, director Bryan Singer returns with X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.’

It’ll be in cinemas on May 18th. [Read more…]

Domhnall Gleeson & Michelle Pfeiffer In Talks For Darren Aronofsky’s Next Film

April 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

domhnall-gleesonThe cast for Darren Aronofsky’s next movie is growing, with Variety reporting that Domhnall Gleeson, Brian Gleeson (who’s Domhnall’s brother), Michelle Pfeiffer and Ed Harris are in talks to join the currently untitled new movie.

They’d star alongside the previously cast Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem in the film, with ‘centers on a couple whose relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home and disrupt their tranquil existence’. There’s not too much more info on the plot or the roles that everyone will be playing.

The domestic drama is due to start shooting fairly soon, with a 2017 release being eyed.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 (Blu-ray Review)

March 20, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Julianne Moore, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Donald Sutherland
Director: Francis Lawrence
Running Time: 137 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: March 21st 2016 (UK)

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 was an entertaining movie but there’s no doubt that it largely felt like it was laying the groundwork and building us up for Part 2. Now that film is coming to Blu-ray, so that those who didn’t catch it in cinemas can find out how the struggle between the Districts and the Capitol ends.

Panem is now in full-scale Civil War, with Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) having been enrolled as the Mockingjay, a figurehead that District 13 President Alma Coin (Julianne Moore) wants to use for propaganda purposes. However, all Katniss really wants is to kill President Snow (Donald Sutherland) in the hope it will bring everything to an end. She also becomes increasingly suspicious of Coin, concerned that if she takes control after the Capitol collapses, they could be simply replacing one despot with another. [Read more…]

New X-Men: Apocalypse Trailer – What happens when mutants start to believe they’re gods?

March 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Xmen_Apocalypse_CampD_Defend-slideThe timeline may have been reset with X-Men: Days Of Future Past, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t still plenty of problems between man and mutant – or more particularly in Apocalypse between mutant and mutant. Now a new trailer has dropped which suggests this is going to be one hell of a battle.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Following the critically acclaimed global smash hit X-Men: Days of Future Past, director Bryan Singer returns with X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. The Defenders Get An X-Men: Apocalypse Poster

March 10, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Xmen_Apocalypse_CampD_Defend-slideA couple of days ago a new poster for X-Men: Apocalypse introduced us to the Four Horsemen who will be plotting humanity’s destruction. Now it’s time for those on the other side to shine, including newcomers Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan and Kodi Smit-McPhee as young versions of Jean Grey, Cyclops and Nightcrawler.

There’s also Professor Xavier (James McAvoy), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence – who it seems is on the good side for this one), and Quicksilver (Evan Peters).

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Following the critically acclaimed global smash hit X-Men: Days of Future Past, director Bryan Singer returns with X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. X-Men: Apocaplyse Extended Super Bowl Spot – Things are getting serious for the mutants

February 8, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

x-men-apocalypse-trailer-slideThings were pretty precarious for the mutants in Days Of Future Past, but it looks like resetting the timeline hasn’t made their lives any easier. An extended version of the movie’s Super Bowl spot certainly suggests things are getting intense, angry and destructive.

Take a look below.

Here’s the synopsis:’Following the critically acclaimed global smash hit X-Men: Days of Future Past, director Bryan Singer returns with X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.’

Bryan Singer directs once more more, with James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Oscar Isaac, Nicholas Hoult, Rose Byrne, Olivia Munn, Evan Peters, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Lucas Till, Josh Helman, Lana Condor and Ben Hardy starring.

It’ll be in cinemas next May.

Jennifer Lawrence Will Be Fidel Castro’s Lover In Marita

January 20, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jennifer-lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence is planning to fall in love with Fidel Castro, but thankfully only in a movie, as Variety reports that she’s signed on to play the title role in Marita, for Sony Pictures. No director is currently attached.

The German-born Marita Lorenz ‘was incarcerated at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp during World War II. After she had an affair at the age of 19 with Castro, she was approached by the CIA to kill the Cuban leader. Lorenz later testified before Congress in the JFK investigations, claiming that she was witness to a conspiracy between the CIA, Cuban operatives and Lee Harvey Oswald to murder the president, and even spied for the FBI on UN diplomats who lived in her building.’

Sony has purchased the rights to her life, and also bought a pitch from Eric Warren Singer. The whole thing certainly moves up a notch with Lawrence attached, who has a bit of a magic touch when it comes to films like this. It’s not clear when it will shoot.

The Revenant Tops The Golden Globe Awards, While Ricky Gervais Raises Ire With Caitlyn Jenner Joke

January 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

revenant-slieWhen the Hollywood Foreign Press Association hired Ricky Gervais to host the Golden Globes after a three-year gap, you’ve got to think they were hoping for a bit of controversy. After all, all of his previous experiences has commenters asking whether he’d gotten too close to the knuckle.

This year the joke that raised many people’s ire almost inevitably involved Caitlyn Jenner, which Gervais delivered barely five seconds into the ceremony. He said, “I’m gonna be nice tonight – I’ve changed. Not as much as Bruce Jenner, obviously. Now Caitlyn Jenner, of course. What a year she’s had. She became a role model for trans people everywhere, showing great bravery in breaking down barriers and destroying stereotypes. She didn’t do a lot for women drivers. But, you can’t have everything; not at the same time.”

Oddly while many have decided it was transphobic, it’s not really, other than potentially the mention of her former name, as it fully accepts her as a woman. Easier to argue would be that it’s mysogynistic, as the real target of stereotyping is women drivers, or that making a joke about the fact Jenner was involved in an accident where someone died could be viewed as tasteless. However, just because it’s at Caitlyn’s expense doesn’t automatically make it transphobic, despite what some people would like to believe.

With the actual awards, The Revenant was the big winner, picking up Best Director, Best Actor – Drama for Leonardo DiCaprio and Best Picture – Drama. Some have suggested this now perfectly tees the movie up to repeat that at the Oscars.

The Martian also did well, with Matt Damon picking up Best Actor – Musical or Comedy and Best Picture – Music or Comedy. That’s despite many wondering how the movie got classed as either a comedy or a musical, other than in terms of the studio knowing they were more likely to win if they entered it in those categories than in the Drama ones.

Jennifer Lawrence picked up her third Golden Globe for Joy in the Best Actress – Musical or Comedy, while Brie Larson for her first for Room in the Best Actress – Drama category. The latter suprised many, who though Cate Blanchett was going to win for Carol. Jobs also picked up a couple of awards, with Kate Winslet taking Best Supporting Actress and Aaron Sorking picking up Best Screenplay.

It wasn’t a particularly strong showing on the LGBT front, but Sam Smith won Best Original Song for Spectre theme Writing’s On The Wall, and Lady Gaga got a Best Actress in a Limited-Series or TV Movie gong for American Horror Story: Hotel (the Globes loves giving acting awards to singers, even Madonna has one). While the lesbian-themed Carol was hotly tipped going into the awards season, it was completely shut out at the Globes, and some feel it may also struggle at the Oscars

You can take a look at the full list of winners below, as well as taking a look as the fabulous way out actor Denis O’Hare tipped his hat to his American Horror Story: Hotel character with his Globes outfit. [Read more…]
