Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (Cinema Review)

July 29, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner
Director: Christopher McQuarrie
Running Time: 131 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: July 31st 2015

It seems hard to believe that we are now on the fifth instalment in this franchise, and after 19 years it thankfully shows no signs of stopping. I should state that for me this is a hard film to review as I am a fan of the previous entries, and the latest plays it safe by sticking to the tried and tested formula of its predecessors.

Some reviewers are calling it the best entry in the franchise (which I can’t disagree with) and others have slated it for not adding anything new (which I also can’t disagree with). But for me the most important thing I want from any film is to be entertaining and fun, and this film definitely ticks both those boxes.

In Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Ethan Hunt (Cruise) and crew have to take down the Syndicate, an elite and ungoverned ‘anti IMF (Impossible Missions Force)’ that has set out to change the world through global attacks and assassinations. [Read more…]

Jeremy Renner Says He’s Not Trying To Prove Anything In Response To Gay Rumours

July 2, 2015 By Tim Isaac 3 Comments

jeremy-rennerEver since Jeremy Renner started climbing the star ladder there have been rumours about his sexuality (which partly started because he often takes his mother to awards ceremonies with him as his ‘date’).

Now though he’s taken the time to address those rumours, telling Playboy, “I’m not going to try to prove what I am or am not. It’s silly, right? When you google yourself and the first thing that comes up is ‘Jeremy Renner gay,’ it’s like, ‘Oh, now you’ve arrived. You’re now a giant movie star.’ I don’t care, ultimately, if that’s what people want to think, read and care about. F**king say whatever the hell you want about me. Look at where we’re at socially—leaps and bounds ahead of where we started. That’s an amazing thing. To suggest that it’s negative, that being gay is a terrible thing, a perversion or whatever—I just don’t get it. Don’t you wish we were in a world where we’re not shaming, judging and boxing people in?”

While some have praised the Oscar nominee for not playing the game and refusing to ‘box’ himself in, others have seen it as another example of someone refusing to simply answer the question. It is admittedly odd that he’s keen to suggest that the rumours are about shaming and come from a place where people think being gay is negative, while he’s simulaneously not actually saying whether he is gay or not – something that arguably suggests he thinks there is an issue with it if he doesn’t want to just set the record straight.

Personally I don’t really care either way and if he’d prefer not to answer the question, that’s fair enough, but I’m certainly not as big a fan of Renner’s comments as some have been.

New Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation Trailer – Tom Cruise goes to war with the Syndicate

June 4, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mission-impossible-rogue-nation-poster2-slideIt would seem the Mission: Impossible franchise has decided it wants to sit halfway between a Marvel superhero movie and a James Bond flick, but considering the amount of money those films make, that’s probably not a bad decision for Paramount to have made.

Synopsis: ‘With the IMF disbanded, and Ethan (Tom Cruise) out in the cold, the team now faces off against a network of highly skilled special agents, the Syndicate. These highly trained operatives are hellbent on creating a new world order through an escalating series of terrorist attacks. Ethan gathers his team and joins forces with disavowed British agent Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), who may or may not be a member of this rogue nation, as the group faces their most impossible mission yet.’

Tom Cruise star alongside Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner and Ving Rhames, and adds to the cast Rebecca Ferguson and Alec Baldwin

Paul Rudd & Paul Bettany Join Captain America: Civil War As Production Begins

May 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ant-man-paul-rudd-shirtlessCaptain America: Civil War is increasingly turning into and Avengers movie in all but name, as while it will lack a few of the throng, such as Thor and Hulk, it’s got Iron Man and Scarlet Widow, and now it’s been confirmed it will also have The Vision (Paul Bettany), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and James ‘War Machine’ Rhodes (Don Cheadle).

To many people’s surprise, after making his Marvel Universe debut later this year in Ant-Man, Paul Rudd will also be in the new Cap film.

And while Marvel has largely ignored 2008’s The Incredible Hulk despite it being technically part of their filmic universe (even if it did have a different actor in the main role), it’s now bringing back one of that movie’s characters, William Hurt’s General Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross.

The info was included in a press release announcing the start of production, which also included the following synopsis, ‘“Captain America: Civil War” picks up where “Avengers: Age of Ultron” left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.’

As that suggests, the movie will shake things up, with the fallout being seen in Avengers: Infinity War.

What isn’t known yet is who will play another character we’ve been promised for the movie, Spider-man, but presumably we’ll find out who’s playing the role very soon.

Crush Of The Day: The Stars Turn Out For The Avengers: Age Of Ultron World Premiere

April 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

avengers-premiere-slideThe stars of Marvel were out in force for the LA World Premiere of Avengers: Age Of Ultron, and as you’d expect the likes of Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth and Jeremy Renner had their best threads on as they strutted down Hollywood Boulevard, and we’ve got the pics to prove it.

It was a bit of an early World Premiere as the film isn’t out in the US until May 1st, but the stars are off on a world tour to promote the film before its international release on April 23rd, and so the US premiere has already taken place.

As well as the stars mentioned above, Avengers actors such as Mark Ruffalo, James Spader, Scarlett Johansson, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Cobie Smulders, Samuel L. Jackson, Paul Bettany and Anthony Mackie were also on hand, as were stars from the wider Marvel world, such as Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D’s Clark Gregg and Brett Dalton, and Ant-Man’s Paul Rudd.

Take a look at the action from the red carpet below. [Read more…]

New Avengers: Age Of Ultron Trailer Hits – Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans & co. are back

March 4, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

avengers-age-of-ultron-captain-america-banner
avengers-age-of-ultron-hawkeye-banner

I think Marvel are keen for us to know that Avengers: Age Of Ultron won’t be short on action, as they’ve released a trailer that seems to want to suggest the Battle Of New York was a bit wimpy compared to what they have in store.

You can take a look at it before, along with new character banners for Captain America and Hawkeye above (you can see the other recent character banners for the movie here and here).

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Marvel Studios presents “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” the epic follow-up to the biggest Super Hero movie of all time. When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to The Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for an epic and unique global adventure.

Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” stars Robert Downey Jr., who returns as Iron Man, along with Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk. Together with Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and with the additional support of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill, the team must reassemble to defeat James Spader as Ultron, a terrifying technological villain hell-bent on human extinction. Along the way, they confront two mysterious and powerful newcomers, Wanda Maximoff, played by Elizabeth Olsen, and Pietro Maximoff, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and meet an old friend in a new form when Paul Bettany becomes Vision. Written and directed by Joss Whedon and produced by Kevin Feige, Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963. Get set for an action-packed thrill ride when The Avengers return in Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” on April 23rd, 2015.’ [Read more…]

New Avengers: Age Of Ultron Poster Unites Heroes Old & new

February 24, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

avengers-age-of-ultron-poster2Believe it or not but it’s now less than two months until Avengers: Age Of Ultron on April 23rd 2015 (and a week later in the US). As a result it’s time for the official poster which brings together an awsul lot of heroes, including Hawkeye, Black Widow, Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and newcomers Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver.

It looks cool if a little and rather generic, especially with Vision and loads of robots flying around in the background.

Here’s the short synopsis: ‘When Tony Stark jumpstarts a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as they battle to save the planet from destruction at the hands of the villainous Ultron.’

It stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Cobie Smulders, Stellan Skarsgård with James Spader and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.

New Avengers: Age Of Ultron Trailer – Thor, Hulk, Iron Man & Co. Up The Action

January 13, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

avengers-age-of-ultron-poster1-slideThe new trailer for Avengers: Age Of Ultron may start out fairly quietly, but by the end of its running time it’s certainly upped the action, with plenty of explosions, fighting and perhaps most excitingly for fans, some hulkbusting.
