Bruce Almighty Getting A True Sequel

January 10, 2012 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Bruce Almighty was a big hit back in 2003, grossing $484 million. At the time Jim Carrey was a huge star and didn’t want to make a sequel, so they made Evan Almighty instead, centring on Steve Carrell’s character from the original movie. That movie, however, was a huge flop.

However now Carrey’s career is on the slide and so he’s more amenable to making another Bruce Almighty movie, and it seems Universal’s pretty keen too. Variety says the studio’s hired Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel to write a direct sequel to Bruce Almighy, which centres on Carrey’s character. The duo were credited alongside Nicholas Stoller on the script for Yes Man and have written the in-development Danny McBride film Bullies.

There’s no news on exactly what direction they’re going with for Bruce Almighty 2, or if it’ll simply be Carrey getting to be God for a bit longer. Nor do we know is Morgan Freeman will return as the almighty Himself (let’s hope so though).

I Love You Phillip Morris (DVD)

November 1, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jim Carrey, Ewan McGregor, Rodrigo Santoro, Leslie Mann
Director: Glenn Ficarra, John Requa
Running Time: 93 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: August 2nd, 2010

It took quite a long time for I Love You Phillip Morris to make it to UK cinemas, partly because it’s a bit of a tough sell. It’s a film that moves from broad comedy to deeply felt drama, doesn’t shy away from the gay side of its story, and makes a hero out of a man who in most cases would be seen as the bad guy. However despite all these difficulties, the movie succeeds admirably. [Read more…]

Olivia Wilde In Talks For Burt Wonderstone

November 1, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Until last week the cast of the magician comedy Burt Wonderstone consisted of just Steve Carell, but a few days ago Jim Carrey came onboard and since then the other roles have been filling up fast, with THR reporting that Olivia Wilde and Steve Buscemi are both in talks for the movie, while Variety adds James Gandolfini has signed up.

The film centres on Steve Carell’s title character, a popular Las Vegas magician who gets upstaged by a hip new street performer (Carrey) with a penchant for dangerous tricks. Wonderstone then goes on a journey of self-discovery to reclaim his love of magic. Wilde is in talks to play Carell’s love interest (only a 22-year age difference there, but Hollywood has never had a problem with middle-aged men and young ladies), while Buscemi is set play Carell’s longtime friend and on-stage partner who quits the act after getting injured. Gandolfini meanwhile will be the owner of the casino where Carell’s character performs.

Sarah Silverman was also in contention for the love-interest role, but it appears they’ve decided on Wilde. Don Scardino will direct, with shooting set to begin in January.

Jim Carrey In Talks For Burt Wonderstone

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Are you ready for Jim Carrey the magician? It could be a lot of fun (assuming he actually tries to be funny, which he seems to have forgotten how to do in his last few movies). Deadline reports that Carrey is now in discussions to star in Burt Wonderstone, alongside Steve Carell.

The film centres on Steve Carell’s title character, a popular Las Vegas magician who gets upstaged by a hip new street performer. Wonderstone then goes on a journey of self-discovery to reclaim his love of magic. It isn’t completely clear who Jim Carrey is playing, but it seems he would play the street magician.

Carrey and Carell worked well together in Bruce Almighty and they’ll soon both be voices in Horton Hears A Who, so this third tie up is fairly welcome news.

It isn’t known when production will start on Burt Wonderstone, but seeing as the script has been around since 2006, let’s hope it’s fairly soon.
