June 21, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

drop-uk-quad-largeThe Drop, based on Dennis Lehane’s short story Animal Rescue, marks the final screen role for James Gandolfini, who stars alongside the always excellent Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace.

Now the international trailer and a poster has arrived for the movie. You can see the latter above and the former below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘THE DROP is a new crime drama from Michaël R. Roskam, the Academy Award nominated director of BULLHEAD. Based on a screenplay from Dennis Lehane (MYSTIC RIVER, GONE BABY GONE), THE DROP follows lonely bartender Bob Saginowski (Tom Hardy) through a covert scheme of funnelling cash to local gangsters – “money drops” – in the underworld of Brooklyn bars. Under the heavy hand of his employer and cousin Marv (James Gandolfini), Bob finds himself at the centre of a robbery gone awry and entwined in an investigation that digs deep into the neighbourhood’s past where friends, families, and foes all work together to make a living – no matter the cost.

Killing Them Softly (Blu-ray)

February 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Scoot McNairy, Ben Mendelsohn, James Gandolfini, Ray Liotta, Brad Pitt
Director: Andrew Dominik
Running Time: 97 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: February 25th 2013

When you start watching Killing Them Softly, you might be confused about why this Brad Pitt film seems to have a distinct lack of Brad Pitt. He doesn’t turn up until nearly 30 minutes in, but certainly makes his presence felt when he does arrive.

Before he comes on-screen we follow Frankie (Scoot McNairy) and Russell (Ben Mendelsohn), two small-time hoods who are talked into ripping off a mob-controlled card game. As you’d expect the local criminal fraternity isn’t top impressed by this, and so hire Jackie (Pitt) to find out who’s responsible and hunt them down. [Read more…]

Olivia Wilde In Talks For Burt Wonderstone

November 1, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Until last week the cast of the magician comedy Burt Wonderstone consisted of just Steve Carell, but a few days ago Jim Carrey came onboard and since then the other roles have been filling up fast, with THR reporting that Olivia Wilde and Steve Buscemi are both in talks for the movie, while Variety adds James Gandolfini has signed up.

The film centres on Steve Carell’s title character, a popular Las Vegas magician who gets upstaged by a hip new street performer (Carrey) with a penchant for dangerous tricks. Wonderstone then goes on a journey of self-discovery to reclaim his love of magic. Wilde is in talks to play Carell’s love interest (only a 22-year age difference there, but Hollywood has never had a problem with middle-aged men and young ladies), while Buscemi is set play Carell’s longtime friend and on-stage partner who quits the act after getting injured. Gandolfini meanwhile will be the owner of the casino where Carell’s character performs.

Sarah Silverman was also in contention for the love-interest role, but it appears they’ve decided on Wilde. Don Scardino will direct, with shooting set to begin in January.
