New Geostorm Trailer – Can Gerard Butler save the world from every natural disaster?

July 6, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Rather than taking a particular kind of disaster and sticking with it, Geostorm is taking a leaf out of the 2012 playbook and throwing them all at the screen. And there’s only Gerard Butler to help us!

Here’s the synopsis: ‘After an unprecedented series of natural disasters threatened the planet, the world’s leaders came together to create an intricate network of satellites to control the global climate and keep everyone safe. But now, something has gone wrong—the system built to protect the Earth is attacking it, and it’s a race against the clock to uncover the real threat before a worldwide geostorm wipes out everything…and everyone along with it.

‘Dean Devlin (writer/producer, “Independence Day”) makes his feature film directorial debut with suspense thriller “Geostorm,” starring Gerard Butler (“Olympus Has Fallen,” “300”), Jim Sturgess (“Cloud Atlas”), Abbie Cornish (“Limitless”), Alexandra Maria Lara (“Rush”), Daniel Wu (“The Man with the Iron Fists,” “Warcraft: The Beginning”), Eugenio Derbez (“How to Be a Latin Lover”), with Oscar nominees Ed Harris (“The Hours,” “Apollo 13”) and Andy Garcia (“The Godfather: Part III”).

‘Butler stars as Jake, a scientist who, along with his brother, Max, played by Sturgess, is tasked with solving the satellite program’s malfunction. Cornish stars as Secret Service agent Sarah Wilson; Lara as Ute Fassbinder, the ISS astronaut who runs the space station; Wu as Cheng, the Hong Kong-based supervisor for the Dutch Boy Program; Derbez as space station crew member Hernandez; with Garcia as U.S. President Andrew Palma; and Harris as Secretary of State Leonard Dekkom. The film also stars Zazie Beetz (upcoming “Deadpool 2,” TV’s “Atlanta”), Adepero Oduye (“The Big Short,” “12 Years a Slave”), Amr Waked (“Lucy,” “Syriana”), and Robert Sheehan (“The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones,” “Season of the Witch”).

‘The film, written by Dean Devlin & Paul Guyot, is being produced by Skydance’s David Ellison, Devlin, and Skydance’s Dana Goldberg. Herbert W. Gains, Electric Entertainment’s Marc Roskin and Skydance’s Don Granger are the executive producers. Rachel Olschan of Electric Entertainment and Cliff Lanning co-produce.’

The film is due out in the UK on October 20th. [Read more…]

Geostorm Trailer – Gerard Butler takes on the ultimate in extreme weather

March 8, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For many years, Dean Devlin has a master of disaster, producing the likes of Independence Day and 1998’s Godzilla. However, it’s only now that he’s stepping into the director’s chair, and he’s certainly hoping to destroy a lot of the world in the process.

Stonehearst Asylum (Blu-ray Review)

June 21, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jim Sturgess, Kate Beckinsale, Michael Caine, Ben Kingsley, David Thewlis
Director: Brad Anderson
Running Time: 112 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: June 22nd 2015 (UK)

There’s certainly a great cast of British and Irish actors brought together for Stonehearst Asylum – virtually everyone in it you’ll recognise from something – so it’s a bit of a shame that they’ve gathered in service of a movie isn’t bad, but which never really takes off.

It’s 1899 and Young doctor Edward Newgate (Jim Sturgess) arrives at the remote and isolated Stonehearst Asylum, a place where Europe’s finest families hide their relative who have issues that they feel mean they aren’t suitable for polite society. Newgate wishes to study the methods of the head of the institution, Silas Lamb (Ben Kingsley), who is apparently trying to create a utopian mental health facility, where instead of the harsh, tortuous methods of the past, the patients are treated with dignity and as much normality as possible. Kidnapping Mr. Heineken Trailer – Sam Worthington & Jim Sturgess take Anthony Hopkins hostage

January 21, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Kidnapping-Mr.-Heineken-slideUnfortunately Rutger Hauer is not enough. Back in 2011 he starred in the Dutch movie The Heineken Kidnapping, but now the same true story is getting an English-language makeover and Rutger has been replaced by Anthony Hopkins.

Kidnapping Mr. Heineken tells the tale of Freddy Heineken, lager magnate and a man not short of spare change. In 1983 he was abducted and held in a grotty cell for 21 days before his kidnapper’s ransom demands were met – the biggest ransom ever for a single person. Upon being released, a traumatised Heineken used his unlimited wealth to help the police track down his abductors and bring them to justice.

Sam Worthington, Jim Sturgess, Ryan Kwanten, Mark van Eeuwen and Thomas Cocquerel also star as those who hatch the kidnapping plot. Daniel Alfredson (who helmed two of the original Millennium Trilogy films) directs.

Abbie Cornish & Jim Sturgess Up For Geostorm

August 18, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jim-SturgessBack in April Gerard Butler signed up to get his disaster movie on in Geostorm. Now the cast is growing, as THR reports that Jim Sturgess, Abbie Cornish, Ed Harris and Andy Garcia are in talks to join the movie.

Butler is set to play a satellite engineer who realises the world’s climate-control satellites are malfunctioning. He has to team up with his estranged brother (Sturgess) to stop a man-made storm from destroying the Earth.

Butler head into space to fix the satellites (because satellites can cause storms, not just monitor them, right?), while his brother discovers a plot to assassinate the President of the United States (Andy Garcia), which presumably is linked to the storm. Cornish will be a Secret Service agent and Sturgess’ girlfriend, while Ed Harris will be the Secretary of State.

Independence Day producer Dean Devlin is set to direct Geostorm. He also wrote the original script, which is now being worked on by Kieran Mulroney and Michele Mulroney. A March 25th, 2016 release date has already been set.

Benedict Cumberbatch, Henry Cavill Or Tom Hiddleston May Go Up Everest

October 22, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

benedict-cumberbatchThe Fifth Estate may have bombed badly at the US box office last weekend, but Benedict Cumberbart is still very much in demand. That includes by Doug Liman, who wants him for his upcoming film, Everest, according the Deadline.

There are plenty of other hot names in contention, including Joel Kinnaman, James McAvoy, Tom Hiddleston, Henry Cavill, Luke Evans, Dan Stevens, Matthew Goode, and Jim Sturgess – although it’s not known which of those will actually end up in the film as the legendary George Mallory and his Australian rival George Finch . Tom Hardy was previously attached, but was forced to drop out due to scheduling conflicts.

The story is an adaptation of Jeffrey Archer’s non-fiction book Paths of Glory, which is all about explorer George Mallory’s attempt to get into the record books as the first man to reach the top of Mount Everest. The movie is all about Mallory’s obsession with the mountain, as well as his rivalry with fellow climber George Finch.

Mallory and his climbing partner Sandy Irvine failed in two attempts to scale the mountain in 1921 and 1922. They were spotted near the summit on their third attempt in 1924 but nobody knows if they actually made it to the top, as they died on the mountain. Their remains were discovered in 1999 by Mark Anker.

There’s also another movie called Everest in the works, which has Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Jake Gyllenhaal and Jason Clarke circling. That one is due to shoot this autumn and is about an infamous incident in 1996, when tragedy struck two separate groups who tried to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

Sam Worthington, Jim Sturgess & Ryan Kwanten Up For Freddy Heineken

Sam Worthington in Man On A Ledge

Sam Worthington

Not too long ago Rutger Hauer starred in a movie about the kidnapping of Freddy Heineken. Now Hollywood is taking on the subject, according to Variety, with Sam Worthington, Jim Sturgess, Ryan Kwanten and Anthony Hopkins have signed on to star.

Called Kidnapping Freddy Heineken, the film is about the true story of Dutch beer mogul Alfred “Freddy” Heineken (Hopkins), who was kidnapped along with his driver Ab Doderer in 1983. They were both released after the ransom of a whopping 35 Dutch guilders was paid, which is the equivalent of $50 million today. The abductors were eventually caught and prosecuted. It isn’t known what characters Worthington, Kwanten and Sturgess will play, although there’s a good chance they’ll be kidnapper. Tom Cocquerel and Mark van Eeuwen are also starring in unspecified roles.

Daniel Alfredson (The Girl Who Played with Fire, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest) is directing from a script by William Brookfield (Rough Magic). Shooting is scheduled to begin later this month in Belgium, before shooting shifts to Amsterdam and New Orleans.

Ben Kingsley & Michael Caine Join Eliza Graves

April 12, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

michael-caineBrad Anderson’s career has certainly has its up and downs. He got major praise for The Machinist, but few saw Transsiberian, and Vanishing On 7th Street was such a disaster it was quietly slipped out with nobody noticing. However he’s had a bit of a boost with the recent The Call, and now he’s lining up Eliza Graves.

Jim Sturgess and Kate Beckinsale are already aboard to star, and now he’s added some more Brits, as Deadline reports that Ben Kingsley and Michael Caine have signed on to star.

The screenplay is based on a short story by Edgar Allan Poe called The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether, and follows a Med School student trapped in a mental institution that has been overtaken by its inmates. Some of the patients are now pretending to be doctors, but it’s not clear who. Kate Beckinsale will play the title character, an inmate who has an affair with a Harvard grad. There’s no news on who Caine and Kingsley will play, although we’d bet one is a patient posing as a doctor, while the other is the real head of the institution who’s been forced to be a patient.

Joe Gangemi (Wind Chill) wrote the script, with production set to begin June 21st in Bulgaria.

Jim Sturgess Set To Join Kate Beckinsale In Eliza Graves

April 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jim-sturgessJim Sturgess is one of those actors who for several years has seemed on the edge of major stardom. Now he’d got a new role, as he has signed up to star alongside Kate Beckinsale in Brad Anderson’s movie Eliza Graves, which is loosely based on Edgar Allan Poe’s 1845 short story The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fethe, according to THR.

The film is about a Harvard Medical School graduate (Sturgess) who lands a job as an intern at a mental institute. He becomes obsessed with the title character (Beckinsale). However he doesn’t know that the hospital has been overrun by the patients, who are now posing as doctors.

Brad Anderson (The Call) is directing from a screenplay by Joe Gangemi (Wind Chill). Shooting is scheduled to start June 21st in Bulgaria.

New Upside Down Trailer – Jim Sturgess & Kirsten Dunst come from parallel worlds

January 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Upside Down definitely has an intriguing premise, but it’s one of those movies where it’s yet to be seen if the plot can live up to the promise of the setup.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Adam (Jim Sturgess) is a seemingly ordinary guy in a very extraordinary universe. He lives humbly trying to make ends meet, but his romantic spirit holds on to the memory of a girl he met once upon a time from another world, an inverted affluent world with its own gravity, directly above but beyond reach (each universe is in the sky of the other, able to see once another but not interact)… a girl named Eve (Kirsten Dunst). Their childhood flirtation becomes an impossible love. But when he catches a glimpse of grown-up Eve on television, nothing will get in the way of getting her back…’

No UK release date is currently set, but Juan Solanas’ movie arrives in the US in March. [Read more…]
