Jane Fonda & Lily Tomlin’s Husbands Will Hook Up In A New Gay-Themed Netflix Series

In 1980 Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton teamed up for 9 To 5 and in the process became a bit of a one-off legendary partnership. Now Tomlin and Fonda are reuniting for a new series on Netflix, called Grace And Frankie, and it’s even got a little gay interest thrown in for good measure.

The comedy focuses on nemeses Grace (Fonda) and Frankie (Tomlin) facing the last chapter of their lives, though not in the way they expected. When their husbands announce they are in love with each other and plan to get married, the women find their lives both turned upside down and – to their dismay – permanently intertwined. Eventually, to their surprise, they find they have each other.

13 half-hour episodes of the show, which comes from Friends creator Marta Kauffman and Emmy nominee Howard J. Morris, are planned. It should go live this summer.

“Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin are among the funniest and most formidable actresses ever and it’s an incredible privilege to give them the opportunity to run riot on Netflix,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix Chief Content Officer. “The show created for them by Marta and Howard is warm, very funny and anything but wholesome. We can’t wait.”

Now we just need to get Dolly involved!

Lily Tomlin Marries Her Longtime Partner Jane Wagner

January 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jane-wagner-lily-tomlinLily Tomlin and Jane Wagner have been together for 42 years, but it’s only now that they can get married in their home state of California, and that’s just what they’ve done.

Gossip columnist Liz Smith let slip the news, saying, ‘And my longtime friends, Lily Tomlin and her love, the writer Jane Wagner, got married on the eve of 2014. … My wish is that their happiness will be as great as their combined talents.’

When she got engaged last August she said she wanted the ceremony to be anything but traditional. “No rings, no bridal dresses,” she said, adding. “Maybe we’ll be dressed like chickens.”

As yet, there’s no news if avian wedding outfits were indeed involved in their nuptials.

Lily Tomlin May Marry Her Partner Jane Wagner While Dressed Like A Chicken!

August 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jane-wagner-lily-tomlinLily Tomlin may have spent much of her career halfway out of the closet, but she’s out and proud now. She’s also been with the same woman, Jane Wagner, for 42 years. Now the latest movements in the gay marriage debate in the US seem to have gotten her thinking about her own potential nuptials.

She tells E! that she never expected same-sex marriage to become legal in her lifetimes. Now that the Supreme Court has struck down Prop. 8, the California-living couple are considering their options.

“You don’t really need to get married, but marriage is awfully nice,” Tomlin said. “Everybody I know who got married, they say it really makes a difference. They feel very very happy about it.”

However she certainly doesn’t want anything to be traditional. “No rings, no bridal dresses,” she added. “Maybe we’ll be dressed like chickens.”

The Celluloid Closet (DVD)

November 2, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Lily Tomlin, Whoopi Goldberg, Susan Sarandon, Tony Curtis
Director: Rob Epstein, Jeffrey Friedman
Running Time: 101 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: May 4th, 2009

It’s a bit of a surprise that it’s taken so long for The Celluloid Closet to make it to DVD. The 1995 documentary, which looks at the history of gays and lesbians in film, won numerous awards and was a major success on its release, and yet it’s only just appearing on DVD now. Based on the book by Vito Russo, which was the seminal work on the subject, it’s a fascinating trawl through a topic that has always been present in cinema, but for most of its history was hidden away and never openly mentioned.

Starting right at the earliest days of moving images, The Celluloid Closet charts the different ways cinema has tried to deal with homosexuality, from Marlene Dietrich dressing in a tux and kissing a woman in 1930’s Morocco, to how The Hay’s Code insisted that any suggestion of homosexuality was stripped out of film adaptations of Tennessee Williams.
