Hairspray Live! Teaser – Harvey Fierstein, Jennifer Hudson, Derek Hough & co. can’t stop the beat

November 22, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hairspray-live-slideAmerican TV has found a new love of live stagings of musical, with the likes of The Sound Of Music, Peter Pan, The Wiz and most particularly Grease all having successful outings. This December Hairspray is getting the same treatment, and to help drum up interest, a teaser for the production has arrived – which certainly makes it look like this won’t stray far from the movie version, even if it has the stage version’s Harvey Fierstein in one of the key roles.

The great cast cast includes Fierstein as Edna Turnblad, Jennifer Hudson as Motormouth Mabel, Martin Short as Wilbur Turnblad, Derek Hough as Corny Collins, Ariana Grande as Penny Pingleton, Andrea Martin as Prudy Pingleton and Kristin Chenoweth as Velma Von Tussle. Rosie O’Donnell and Sean Hayes will also make special appearances.

The live broadcast will air on Wednesday, Dec. 7th at 8 p.m. (ET/PT). Take a look at the new teaser below. [Read more…]

Inherent Vice (Cinema Review)

January 29, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Owen Wilson, Josh Brolin, Katherine Waterston, Martin Short
Director: Paul Thomas Anderson
Running Time: 149 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: January 30th 2015

If you demand coherent plots and comprehensible dialogue from your movies, look away now. There is not one scene of Anderson’s sprawling behemoth of a movie that makes any sense whatsoever. It’s a stoned, fug-smoked, labyrinth of a film noir that takes pleasure in its baffling structure and dares you to go along with it. Frankly after an hour it’s too much effort, and the pleasure switches in watching great actors revelling in show-off roles soaked in dreamy Californian sunshine. [Read more…]

The Wind Rises (Blu-ray Review)

September 29, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Martin Short, Stanley Tucci
Director: Hayao Miyazaki
Running Time: 126 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: September 29th 2014 (UK)

While Japanese anime that covers weirdly sexual sci-fi, giant robots and horror has found its place in the West, what still seems like an anomaly to us are animated movies for grown-ups that don’t go that far into the fantastical. In fact for several reasons, and despite how good it is, it’s difficult to imagine The Wind Rises ever getting a release over here if it weren’t directed by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki (and it’s probably his last film).

The movie is a biopic of one of Miyazaki’s heroes, Jirô Horikoshi, starting with his youth as a young boy in the 1920s who dreams of being able to fly, but knowing that due to his bad eyesight he can never be a pilot. Once grown he heads off to university to become an engineer before getting a job helping to design planes. [Read more…]

Legends Of Oz: Dorothy’s Return (DVD Review)

September 29, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Lea Michele, Dan Aykroyd, Kelsey Grammer, John Belushi, Martin Short
Director: Will Finn, Dan St. Pierre
Running Time: 88 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: September 22nd 2014 (UK)

I get the impression that whoever did the casting on Legends Of Oz: Dorothy’s Return must have a fondness for the 1980s. After all bringing in Dan Aykroyd (the Scarecrow), Kelsey Grammer (Tin Man), John Belushi (Lion) and Martin Short (Jester) to play some of the voices can’t be a coincidence.

But that’s by-the-by to this sequel to The Wizard Of Oz, which is pretty much the same as the earlier story but different. Dorothy is just back from Oz when she gets snatched up (by a rainbow this time) and dumped back in the magical country. Once more she needs to get to the Emerald City, this time enlisting the help of an overweight owl, a prissy princess made of bone china, a marshmallow soldier and a talking tree that gets turned into a boat. Frankenweenie (DVD)

February 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Charlie Tahan, Catherine O’Hara, Martin Short, Martin Landau, Winona Ryder
Director: Tim Burton
Running Time: 87 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: February 25th 2013

With Frankenweenie and Paranorman, we may be seeing a resurgence in family films that are meant to be a bit scary, rather than the anaemically nice kid’s movies we’ve had for the last few years. While Tim Burton’s animated movie is never too intense for youngsters, it’s gently creepy and touches on some tough themes, such as learning to come to terms with death.

Victor Frankenstein is a young lad who’s devastated when his beloved pet dog, Sparky, is run over by a car and killed. Unable to accept his pooch’s untimely demise, Victor comes up with an incredible plan to use electricity to bring the animal back to life. Miraculously it works, although Victor realises he must keep the revived Sparky a secret. [Read more…]

Dorothy Of Oz Trailer – The Emerald City gets animated

September 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While numerous OZ films have been announced over the last few years, most have fallen by the wayside or are still in development, but two are coming fairly soon – Disney’s live-action Oz The Great And Powerful, and the animated Dorothy Of Oz. Now the trailer for the latter is here. The plot begins as Dorothy returns to Kansas to find it devastated by the tornado that sent her to Oz. Before she can react to the destruction of her home, she is transported back to Oz, where her three friends (Scarecrow, Lion and Tin Man) have disappeared. She meets a charming man made of marshmallows who can’t quite think for himself, a tiny china doll princess whose bossiness is a cover for her fragility, and a tugboat with as many personalities as he has pieces. Dorothy must help this group band together against the Jester, a wicked new villain who believes that all of Oz should be under his control. The movie features the voices of Lea Michele, Martin Short, Dan Aykroyd, Kelsey Grammer and Patrick Stewart.
