Orlando-BloomOrlando Bloom is stepping back out of Middle Earth and teaming up with Michael Douglas and Noomi Rapace for the thriller Unlocked, with Michael Hafstrom directing, according to THR.

Based on Peter O’Brien’s script, the film is about Rapace’s CIA interrogator, who gets tricked into providing a terrorist with information that they need and because of that she becomes involved in a plot to plan a biological attack in London.

It’s not clear who either Bloom or Douglas will play.

The film is currently looking for buyers in Toronto, with production set to start this November.

Marvel’s Ant-Man Gets A Rather Cool Concept Art Poster

July 25, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ant-Man-Comic-ConEdgar Wright may be out and Peyton Reed has come in to replace him, but it’s full steam ahead with Marvel’s Ant-Man. While it’s too early to show off footage at Comic Con, Marvel has taken the opportunity to release a rather cool concept art poster, which gives us our best look yet at the hero in his suit, along with Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas in the background.

The accompanying EW article lets us know, ‘That’s Paul Rudd taking on the central role of Scott Lang, a thief who, according to the comics, stole the technology behind the shrinking suit from the original Ant-Man, Hank Pym.

‘And there’s Michael Douglas, joining the Marvel universe as Pym, a scientist with Tony Stark-levels of ingenuity. He not only builds a miniaturizing mechanism, but also constructs a method of communicating with tiny creatures. (Better to have them on your side than trying to eat you.)

‘Although Lang only steals the suit to make it easier to lead a life of crime—it’s simple to sneak in and grab other things of value when you are microscopic—he inevitably follows a reluctant hero arc.’

The film is due out July 17th, 2015.

Peyton Reed Announced To Direct Marvel’s Ant Man

June 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

peyton-reedAfter Edgar Wright’s departure and Adam McKay saying he couldn’t do it, Marvel has been scrambling to find a replacement director for Ant Man. As they want to keep their Summer 2015 release date, there’s only a short list of directors with the right experience and who might be free.

Now it seems they’ve found one they think can do the job – Peyton Reed. He has plenty of experience with comedy, having helmed the likes of Bring It On, The Break-up and Yes Man. However he hasn’t really done much on the major tentpole action or, special effects front, so this will be something rather different for him.

He’s not a name that’s likely to get that many people excited (and indeed some will undoubtedly say he’s been brought in more by necessity than that he’s truly the right man for the job), but he’s a decent director and if he’s got the right people around him to help with the more technical FX side, there’s no reason to say he can’t make a success of it.

Along with the news of who will direct came a bit more of a plot synopsis, which says, ‘When Marvel’s “Ant-Man” hits theaters July 17, 2015, director Peyton Reed will help shepherd the hero into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a cast led by Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas, with writer Adam McKay contributing to the film’s script.

‘Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang (Rudd) must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym (Douglas), protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.’

It’s interesting news that while McKay won’t direct, he will put the final touches on the script, especially as it was the changes new writers had added to Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish’s script that resulted in Wright walking. Hopefully when the film’s released Edgar will let us know how close it is to what he was planning.

It also means that Reed will have to push back his work on The Fifth Beatle, about the legendary music group’s gay manager, Brian Epstein.

House Of Card’s Corey Stoll Joins Marvel’s Ant-Man

March 25, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

corey-stollThe Ant-Man cast continues to grow with the news that the always excellent Corey Stoll (House Of Card, Midnight In Paris) has joined the cast, according to TheWrap, although it’s not known who he will play.

He’ll star alongside Michael Douglas and Paul Rudd as original Ant-Man Hank Pym and his eventual successor Scott Lang. Evangeline Lilly will be the female lead, who is rumoured to be Pym’s daughter and Lang’s love interest.

Patrick Wilson and Michael Pena are also set for currently unknown roles (although it’s believed Pena will be a villain).

Marvel hasn’t officially released any plot details, but it’s believed the story starts in the 1960s, where Hank Pym, who has invented technology that can shrink him to a tiny size, is working as a spy fighting Communism for the government. The story then shifts to the present day, where Michael Douglas is an older Hank Pym. It’s been suggested Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang initially steals Pym’s tech, but eventually starts to work with him and become the Ant-man.

Edgar Wright is directing from a script he co-wrote with Joe Cornish. Filming begins next month.

Patrick Wilson Joins Marvel’s Ant-Man In An Unknown Role

February 28, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

patrick-wilsonAfter Watchmen Patrick Wilson is returning to the world of superheroes, this time stepping into Marvel’s universe for Ant-Man. He has landed the last major role in the movie, according to Deadline, although it hasn’t been revealed who Wilson will play.

Michael Douglas and Paul Rudd are starring as Hank Pym and Scott Lang, the original Ant-man and the guy who ends up becoming his successor. It’s believed the plot starts in the 1960s, where Hank Pym, who has invented technology that can shrink him to a tiny size, is working as a spy fighting Communism for the government. The story then shifts to the present day, where Michael Douglas is an older Hank Pym. It’s been suggested Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang initially steals Pym’s tech, but eventually starts to work with him and become the Ant-man.

Michael Pena is also attached, playing a villain named Castillo, while Evangeline Lilly is in talks to play the female lead. He character is said to be Hank Pym’s daughter and the love interest of Scott Lang. How Patrick Wilson will fit into all this isn’t known.

Edgar Wright is directing from a script he co-wrote alongside Joe Cornish, with shooting set to begin in April.

Evangeline Lilly in Talks For Ant-Man Female Lead

February 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Evangeline-LillyAfter being Hobbited up to the max recently, Evangeline Lilly has scored another major movie role, as she is in early talks to take the female lead in Marvel’s Ant-Man, according to THR.

It’s not been confirmed which character she will portray, although insiders have suggested that the actress is playing the daughter of Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), who is also the love interest of Scott Lang (Paul Rudd).

This would be a new character, as Pym didn’t have a daughter in the Marvel comic books, so it’s possible that she would be someone specifically created for the movie, or an existing character whose history has been altered. Another possibility is that she will be Janet Van Dyne, aka. The Wasp, who last October Rashida Jones was reported to be a frontrunner to play. At the time Van Dyne was described as, “a love interest and a major supporting character” in Ant-Man.

Edgar Wright is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Joe Cornish. Production is scheduled to begin this April.

Michael Pena In Talks For Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man

January 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Michael-PenaJust a day after it was announced that Michael Douglas had joined the cast of Ant-Man, another actor is in the mix, as THR reports that Michael Pena is in early talks for the Edgar Wright film.

It’s not known what role American Hustle and End Of Watch’s Pena is up for, but he’ll join Douglas and Paul Rudd in the movie. Douglas is Hank Pym, the inventor of the Ant-Man tech which can shrink him to insect time, while Rudd will be Scott Lang, who becomes the hero after getting hold of Pym’s technology.

The only thing known about Pena’s role is that Marvel was looking for a “tough Latino” who has to be ready for a lot of physical play. The likes of Javier Bardem and Clifton Collins Jr. were also considered.

Michael Douglas Joins Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man As Hank Pym

January 13, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

BEHIND-THE-CANDELABRA-michael-douglasWell this explains a few things. When Paul Rudd was announced for Ant-Man, the assumption was that he would be playing Hank Pym, the original incarnation of the character, but Marvel didn’t actually confirm that. Then a couple of weeks ago director Edgar Wright hinted at multiple Ant-Men.

Now we know why, as Marvel has announced that that Michael Douglas will play Pym, which means Rudd will be Scott Lang, who in the comics becomes Ant-Man after stealing Hank’s tech. Variety suggests Pym will be the villain of the movie, but as the official Marvel report doesn’t mention that, it would seems to be a mistake.

Marvel’s Kevin Feige said, ‘With Hank Pym’s rich history in the Marvel Universe, we knew we needed an actor capable of bringing the weight and stature to the role that the character deserves. We felt incredibly relieved when Michael Douglas agreed to step into the part with the charm and fortitude he brings to every character he inhabits, and couldn’t be more excited to see what he will do to bring Hank Pym to life.’

If the movie follows what Wright has previously said, we’ll see some of action of Pym is the 60s, before moving to the present day and seeing the origin of Scott Lang as Ant-Man, and how he ends up teaming up with the older Pym. However no story details have been confirmed. The movie is due out July 2015.

Behind The Candelabra (DVD)

October 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Michael Douglas, Rob Lowe, Scott Bakula, Debbie Reynolds, Matt Damon
Director: Steven Soderbergh
Running Time: 118 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 14th 2013

Hollywood studios refused to pay for Behind The Candelabra as despite the presence of Michael Douglas, Matt Damon, director Steven Soderbergh (Traffic, Ocean’s 11) and having a relatively low-budget, they thought it was too gay to become a success. They’re probably kicking themselves now as HBO stepped up to the pay for it and had a huge hit with it on US TV, while distributors in other countries took it to cinemas and saw healthy box office. Last Vegas Trailer – Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas & Morgan Freeman have a ball

October 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last Vegas has been described as the ‘old boys Hangover’ with the likes of Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Michael Douglas and Kevin Kline (who are all, incidentally, Oscar winners) heading to Vegas and inevitably getting into trouble. Now the new trailer for the movie has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Billy (Michael Douglas), Paddy (Robert De Niro), Archie (Morgan Freeman) and Sam (Kevin Kline) have been best friends since childhood. So when Billy, the group’s sworn bachelor, finally proposes to his thirty-something (of course) girlfriend, the four head to Las Vegas with a plan to stop acting their age and relive their glory days. However, upon arriving, the four quickly realize that the decades have transformed Sin City and tested their friendship in ways they never imagined. The Rat Pack may have once played the Sands and Cirque du Soleil may now rule the Strip, but it’s these four who are taking over Vegas.’

It should hit cinemas in November. [Read more…]
