In Dubious Battle Trailer – James Franco takes on a John Steinbeck adaptation

August 30, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

in-dubious-battle-slideWhile James Franco hasn’t had any big successes as a director, you certainly can’t blame him for aiming high. He’s previously adapted the likes of William Faulkner and Cormac McCarthy for the big screen, and now he’s taking on John Steinbeck with In Dubious Battle.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Set in the orchards of California Valley in the dirty ’30s, Steinbeck’s tale follows two young idealists from “The Party” who are appalled by the orchards’ terrible working conditions and set out to organize the fruit pickers. Having arrived from out of town, Mac McLeod (Franco) and Jim Nolan (Nat Wolff) are met with skepticism and some outright hostility when they first suggest unionizing. Most of the pickers simply want to work and get paid, even if they are being mercilessly exploited. Mac and Jim realize that their progress depends on convincing local elder Al Anderson (Vincent D’Onofrio). He’s a hard nut, but could be won over after Mac helps his daughter-in-law, Lisa (Selena Gomez), when she goes into labour. Surrounding the two activists is a cast of eclectic characters with varying loyalties, among them the ruthless orchard owner (Robert Duvall), who is determined to crack down on any strike action.’

A trailer for the movie has now arrived, which you can watch below. The film debuts at the Venice International Film Festival, with a Toronto International Film Festival screening shortly afterwards. It’s not known when it will be released. [Read more…]

Wild Horses Trailer – Does James Franco only play gay characters now?

May 28, 2015 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

wild-horses-james-francoI think we need to start a petition, as with his numerous LGBT roles James Franco is taking work away from good, honest, real gay people. Straight people coming over here and taking our jobs, it’s just not right!

Seriously though, no movie star before him has done as much as Franco to explore gay characters and stories as Franco has, as both an actor and a director. Now he’s back with another one, where he’s playing gay, but it’s the legendary Robert Duvall behind the camera.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Texas Ranger Samantha Payne (Luciana Duvall) reopens a 15-year-old Missing Persons case, uncovering clues linking a local boy’s death to wealthy family man, Scott Briggs (Robert Duvall). Samantha will stop at nothing to discover the truth even if it means risking her own life.

‘With the unexpected return of his estranged gay son Ben (Franco), Briggs must find a way to either silence the law for good, or come to terms with the hidden relationship between Ben and the boy that he tried to end years ago.’

The film, which sounds like it mightbe well worth watching, is due out in the US on June 5th. It’s not Franco’s only gay film this year, as he’s also got I Am Michael coming out, in which he plays a man who turns from LGBT activist to ex-gay poster child.

Network (Blu-ray Review)

March 29, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Peter Finch, Faye Dunaway, William Holden, Beatrice Straight, Robert Duvall
Director: Sidney Lumet
Running Time: 121 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 23rd 2015 (UK)

There are plenty of contenders, but in my opinion the best scripts Hollywood has ever come up with are All About Eve and Network. Perhaps surprisingly – or unsurprisingly depending on how you look at it – they could both be accused of biting the media hand that feeds them, with All About Eve taking on Tinsel Town itself, while Network is a scathing satire of TV.

Indeed it was seen as so scathing back in 1976 that it nearly didn’t get made at all, as studio executives were worried no television station would ever air it after its theatrical run had ended. However they obviously hadn’t read the script closely enough or they’d have realised that it doesn’t matter too much what the subject is, as long as it produces ratings/profits TV will show it. James Franco Lines Up Starry Cast For Steinbeck Adaptation In Dubious Battle

February 1, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

james-franco

James Franco has directed far more movies than most people realise, and part of the reason many have gone under the radar is that that are small films with the only well-known name being behind the camera (and ended up with limited distribution).

However he’s thinking bigger with his Steinbeck adaptation In Dubious Battle, with THR reporting that Franco will star alongside Selena Gomez, Vincent D’Onofrio, Robert Duvall, Ed Harris, Bryan Cranston and Danny McBride.

Published in 1936, In Dubious Battle is considered the first major work of Pulitzer Prize-winning author John Steinbeck. Set in a fictionalized valley in California, the story explores themes Steinbeck continued to develop: group behavior, social injustice, man’s inhumanity to man— all themes which continue to be relevant today. A labor conflict between migrant apple pickers and the local growers’ association is the backdrop against which Jim Nolan (Franco) becomes involved in the labor movement and rapidly matures as he learns what it means to do organizational fieldwork.

It doesn’t exactly sound like the most thrilling of plots, but it was always one of Steinbeck’s skills, to make seemingly dull subject – quite often labour relations and the precarious position of manual labourers in a changing world – and make them interesting. Hopefully Franco will do the same. He’s certainly got a good cast to help him.

The movie will start shooting next month.

First Look at Robert Downey Jr. & Robert Duvall In The Judge

June 13, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

the-judge-rdjIt’s around a year ago that The Judge went into production, but it’s only now that we’re getting the first image from the film, featuring Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall.

It certainly makes a change for RDJ from wearing his Iron Man suit.

Robert Downey Jr. plays a big city lawyer who returns to his hometown for his mother’s funeral. Once there he learns that his elderly father (Robert Duvall), the local judge, is the prime suspect in her death.

Downey Jr. comments, “Against his own instincts and desire, he ends up staying to defend his dad from what may or may not be an intentional vehicular manslaughter case. His father is a pillar of the community. Everybody knows a dad like the judge. Every community has one, and every family has either heard of or been under that kind of patriarchy. It’s this very American story. But it’s also a story about family, and reconciliation, and law, and justice.”

The film is due out this autumn.
