Domhnall Gleeson, Eddie Redmayne Or Sam Riley May Be Fantastic Four’s Doctor Doom

March 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

eddie-redmayneNow that the main characters in the planner reboot of Fantastic have been cast, attention has turned to who will be the villain. It seems like Fox wants someone from the UK or Ireland for the role of Doctor Doom, as TheWrap reports that the shortlist is down to Domhnall Gleeson (About Time), Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables), Sam Riley (Maleficent) and Toby Kebbell (Wrath of the Titans). Jack Huston has previously been mentioned, but its not known if he is still in the race.

It seems one of them will join Michael B. Jordan as The Human Torch, Miles Teller as Mr. Fantastic, Kate Mara as The Invisible Woman and Jamie Bell as The Thing. Whoever it is will have to sign up soon, as production is due to begin this April in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The movie is currently due out June 2015.

Neil Jordan has always been interested in the supernatural, from the werewolves of The Company Of Wolves to the mermaids of Ondine. He also had great success with bloodsuckers in Interview With The Vampire. Now he returns to vamps for a very different movie, Byzantium.

Clara (Gemma Arterton) and her younger sister, Eleanor (Saoirse Ronan), are constantly moving around, and this time end up in a run-down English seaside town, where they are taken in by the gentle Noel (Daniel Mays). Director: Walter Salles
Running Time: 124 mins
Certificate: 15

It’s taken a long, long time to get On The Road onto the screen. Francis Ford Coppola bought the rights in 1979 (and that’s ignoring even earlier attempts, some involving Jack Kerouac himself) and has been trying to make it ever since. He’s still involved as a producer, but it’s Walter Salles in the director’s chair, who’s previously brought us the likes of The Motorcycle Diaries and Central Station. [Read more…]

Hollywood has done another remake of a genre breaking, thought provoking film noir and delivered another very average film.

The French film, 13 (Tzameti), shocked cinemagoers around the world with its back and white edgy raw filmmaking, and left stark unforgettable images ingrained in your mind long after you had seen the movie. The remake does nothing of the sort. [Read more…]

New On The Road Trailer Drives In

September 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A new look at Walter Salles’ adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s classic has arrived, so we can get another hint at the tone of the film and it’s rather sepia colour palette. The film follows Sal Paradise (Sam Riley), an aspiring New York writer who meets Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund), a devastatingly charming ex-con, who’s married to the very liberated and seductive Marylou (Kristen Stewart). Sal and Dean bond instantly. Determined not to get locked in to a constricted life, the two friends cut their ties and take to the road with Marylou. Thirsting for liberty, the three young people head off in search of the world, of other encounters, and of themselves. It’s currently due out on the UK on October 12th.

Imelda Staunton & Miranda Richardson Join Maleficent

May 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

As seems to happen a lot of the time when Hollywood heads for fantasy territory, they’re busy filling out the cast of Disney’s fairytale film Maleficent with British talent. Angelina Jolie may be playing the title role, but now THR reports that Brits Imelda Staunton, Miranda Richardson, Kenneth Cranham, Sam Riley, and Lesley Manville have all signed up for the flick.

The film puts a new spin on the relationship between evil fairy Maleficent and Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning), aka Sleeping Beauty. Imelda Staunton and Lesley Manville are playing Knotgrass and Flittle, two of the pixies who care for Aurora. Miranda Richardson is portraying Queen Ulla, Maleficent’s aunt who doesn’t like her evil niece. Sam Riley will be Diaval, Maleficent’s trusted right hand, who can transform himself between a raven and a human. Kenneth Cranham is playing the human king, the father of Aurora who tries to conquer the fairy kingdom.

Robert Stromberg is directing from a screenplay by Linda Woolverton. Production is due to begin this summer, with a March 14, 2014 release date already set.

On The Road Trailer

There’s been a lot of talk about Walter Salles’ adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s classic On The Road, with many suggesting it shouldn’t be made into a film, others being wary about the cast, while many have been avidly looking forward to it. Now the first trailer has arrives, so we can get a hint at the tone of the film and it’s rather sepia colour palette. However, its difficult to tell from this whether the movie will retain the strong homoerotic undertones of the book.

First Pic Of Saoirse Ronan In Vampire Drama Byzantium

February 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Interview With the Vampire director Neil Jordan is returning to the world of bloodsuckers with Byzantium, which stars Saoirse Ronan, Gemma Arterton, Sam Riley, Caleb Landry Jones and Jonny Lee Miller. Now the first image from the movie has arrived, with Saoirse Ronan looking bloody fingered and slightly Red Riding Hood.

Byzantium is about two young women (Ronan and Arterton) who arrive in a nameless British town and claim to be 200-year-old vampires. Local teachers and parents then try to counsel the girls to get to the bottom of their delusions. However, when people start disappearing, people in town must confront the possibility that the two women are, in fact, what they say they are. The film will be out later this year.
