Hail, Caesar! Trailer – The Coens & an all-star cast take on the Golden Age of Hollywood

October 9, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hail-caesar-pic1For Hail! Caesar! the Coen Brothers have certainly lined up an all-star cast, including Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton, Channing Tatum, Scarlett Johansson, Jonah Hill and Frances McDormand, and all for a tale of the Golden Age of Hollywood.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Four-time Oscar®-winning filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen (No Country for Old Men, True Grit, Fargo) write and direct Hail, Caesar!, an all-star comedy set during the latter years of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Starring Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton, Channing Tatum, Scarlett Johansson, Jonah Hill and Frances McDormand, Hail, Caesar! follows a single day in the life of a studio fixer who is presented with plenty of problems to fix.’

A Bigger Splash Trailer – Tilda Swinton, Ralph Fiennes, Dakota Johnson, & Matthias Schoenaerts seek seclusion

October 1, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bigger-splash-slideA Bigger Splash certainly has a great cast, with Tilda Swinton, Ralph Fiennes, Dakota Johnson, & Matthias Schoenaerts seek seclusion coming together for a film described as ‘an impeccably stylish tale of love, beauty, desire, sexuality; people who in trying to retreat from their world, only find it encroaching further upon them.’

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Rock legend Marianne Lane is recuperating on the volcanic island of Pantelleria with her partner Paul when iconoclast record producer and old flame Harry unexpectedly arrives with his daughter Penelope and interrupts their holiday, bringing with him an A-bomb blast of nostalgia from which there can be no rescue.’

The movie will receive a BFI London Film Festival gala screening at The Odeon Leicester Square on October 9th, with a February 2016 UK release planned. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Tilda Swinton May Be The Ancient One In Doctor Strange

May 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tilda-swintonIt seems Marvel’s Doctor Strange is going to have a bit of a British flavour (it might as well, as they film all their movies in Britain anyway), as with Benedict Cumberbatch already installed in the title role, he may now be joined by Tilda Swinton, according to THR.

She will be Strange’s mentor a ‘Tibetan mystic known as the Ancient One, who is training pupils to be the next sorcerer supreme.’ In the comics the character has always been a man, and initially Marvel was going to follow that through with the film, before deciding that Swinton was the right person for the job.

Chiwetel Ejiofor was previously said to be in talks for the movie, with the speculation being that he would be the Ancient One, however the new report doesn’t mention him, so it’s not clear whether he’s moved on or is just playing a different character.

Scott Derrickson is set to direct the movie which follows the title character, Doctor Strange, who is a former neurosurgeon, a practicing sorcerer, and becomes the Sorcerer Supreme, the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats.

The film’s due out November 2016.

Only Lovers Left Alive (Blu-ray Review)

September 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Tom Hiddleston, Tilda Swinton, Mia Wasikowska, Anton Yelchin, John Hurt
Director: Jim Jarmusch
Running Time: 123 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: September 15th 2014 (UK)

Like many Jim Jarmusch movies, Only Lovers Left Alive is the sort of film where one chunk of the audience will be wondering what sort of tedium they’ve just had to sit through and another chunk will be hailing it as a masterpiece. He is as impressively idiosyncratic director and his films determinedly refuse to be boxed. Many have described him as a cinematic poet, and it’s a very good description. What he’s great at is creating mood, feeling and thought, where narrative isn’t the driving force, it’s merely the thread that pulls the fabric together.

Tom Hiddleston is Adam, who’s living in Detroit making music but keen that nobody bothers him. That’s partly because he’s a vampire and hundreds of years old. He’s also depressed and filled with weariness at the direction mankind has taken and how it treats the promise it has, to the point whether he’s wondering if there’s any point living on to see the future. Channing Tatum, Ralph Fiennes & Tilda Swinton Will Hail, Caesar! Alongside George Clooney

June 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Channing-TatumThe Coen Brothers are going for star power with their upcoming Hail Caesar!, as they already George Clooney and Josh Brolin attached, and now THR reports they’re set to be joined by Channing Tatum, Ralph Fiennes and Tilda Swinton.

The film is about Eddie Mannix, a 1950s fixer who works for major Hollywood studios. His job is to try and keep the movie stars in line and also cover up their indiscretions.

Tatum will be ‘a Gene Kelly-type star while Fiennes would play Laurence Lorenz, a studio director, and Swinton will portray a powerful Hollywood gossip columnist’ It’s still now 100% who George Clooney and Josh Brolin are portraying at this time, although it’s believed Clooney will be Mannix.

Many of the Coens’ earlier movies harked back to Hollywood’s Golden Age and this would appear to be a return to their love of Tinsel Town in the 40s and 50s. It’s also suggested there are plenty more colourful characters in the script the Coens can find some great actors to play.

New Snowpiercer Red-Band Trailer – Chris Evans is looking dirty amongst an incredible cast

May 9, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Snowpiercer has had a few problems. Despite great reviews from film festivals, it became stuck in a battle between director Bong Joon-ho and The Weinstein Company over whether a recut version should be released commercially in the US and potentially other countries as well. The Weinsteins wanted to recut it, but Bong wants his version released.

It’s been stuck in limbo for English-speaking countries for over a year now, but eventually the Weinsteins relented and so the director’s original cut will hit US cinemas on June 27th (although annoyingly there’s still no UK date).

Ahead of that comes a new, rather cool, red-band trailer, which gives us a good feel for the movie.

The film is set on a ravaged Earth where the few human survivors are on a train (which gives the film its name) that travels around the globe. However a revolution is brewing amongst the passengers. The film has a great cast, following Curtis (Chris Evans), Mason (Tilda Swinton), Gilliam (John Hurt), Wilford (Ed Harris), Namgoong Minsu (Kang-ho Song), Edgar (Jamie Bell), Tanya (Octavia Spencer), Andrew (Ewen Bremner) and Yona (Ah-sung Ko) as they ride the train. Tilda Swinton, Ezra Miller & Barhad Abdi May Have A Trainwreck

March 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tilda-swintonJudd Apatow’s Trainwreck may have a fairly little known name at its centre – Amy Schumer – but the director is ensuring there are more interesting names around her. Already cast are Bill Hader, Brie Larson and Colin Quinn.

Now the likes of THR, TheWrap & Variety reports he’s court loads more actors, including recent Oscar nominee Barkhad Abdi, comedian Mike Birbiglia, Girls’ Jon Glaser, SNL’s Vanessa Bayer, WWE superstar John Cena, Perks of Being A Wallflower’s Ezra Miller and the superlative Tilda Swinton. It’s certainly an eclectic but interesting mix.

It’s not known who they will play, but that’s not too much of a surprise as Apatow has been keeping his cards close to his chest about this one, other than that it’s about ‘a basket case who tries to rebuild her life’. It’s also known a best friend/co-worker and a parent play a major role.

It’ll be in cinemas July 2015.

Tilda Swinton Believes Straight People Miss Out On The Positive Aspects Of Coming Out As LGBT

March 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Tilda Swinton holds a rainbow flag in Moscow's Red Square

Tilda Swinton holds a rainbow flag in Moscow’s Red Square

Tilda Swinton has long been a big supporter of LGBT rights, including making a bit of a stir last year by posing with a rainbow flag in Moscow’s Red Square last year, shortly after Russia enacted its infamous ‘gay propaganda’ laws.

Now she’s been sharing her thoughts about what gay people get from the challenges they face, which straight people lack. She tells The Daily Beast, “To pass through the transitions that gay people have to in order to come out to themselves, to their families when they’re quite young, it’s a grow-bag, isn’t it?”

“I think that very often, heterosexual people miss out on that. There’s a feeling of development and sometimes, heterosexual people have never had to go through that self-examination and just knowing themselves, and that sense of coming out, coming to your own defense, and being your own best advocate, and going, ‘No! I’m going to stand by myself and say this is who I am and you can all fuck off.'”

“That is a wonderful transition to go through, and I suppose a lot of straight people miss out on that, and then maybe their relationship choices are potentially less examined. They could be lazier or less thoroughly thought-through.”

It’s a good point, as while the difficulties of coming out are often talked about, the fact LGBT can grower stronger because of that is more often ignored.

The Zero Theorem Trailer – Back into the wild world of Terry Gilliam with Christoph Waltz

January 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Terry Gilliam’s storytelling can sometimes be a bit iffy, but his movies are always great to look at, and The Zero Theorem looks like it will be no exception. It also has a story that offers plenty of potential as well.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘An eccentric and reclusive computer genius plagued with existential angst works on a mysterious project aimed at discovering the purpose of existence – or the lack thereof – once and for all. However, it is only once he experiences the power of love and desire that he is able to understand his very reason for being.’

Christoph Waltz leads the cast with David Thewlis, Melanie Thierry, Ben Whishaw, Tilda Swinton and Matt Damon also starring. It’s due out in the UK in March, although no US release is set yet. [Read more…]
