Only Lovers Left Alive Trailer – Tom Hiddleston & Tilda Swinton turn vampire

November 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton are trying out being undead in Only Lovers Left Alive, which attracted rather mixed notices on its Toronto Film Festival debut. However the trailer suggests it could be rather intriguing.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Starring Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska, John Hurt, Anton Yelchin and Jeffrey Wright, ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE takes place against the romantic desolation of Detroit and Tangier and follows an underground musician, deeply depressed by the direction of human activities, who reunites with his resilient and enigmatic lover. Their love story has already endured several centuries at least, but their debauched idyll is soon disrupted by her wild and uncontrollable younger sister.’

It should be out next year. [Read more…]

Tilda Swinton Donates £1000 Towards Funeral For Russian Gay Rights Activist

Tilda Swinton holds a rainbow flag in Moscow’s Red Square

A few months ago Tilda Swinton made a stand for gay rights in Russia by standing in front of St. Basil’s Cathedral holding a rainbow flag. Now she’s made another worthy gesture, donating $1,000 towards the funeral of prominent Russian gay rights activist Alexey Davydov.

Davydov died last week at the age of just 36 following a prolonged illness. An online campaign was launched shortly afterwards to find the money to pay for a funeral.

Swinton’s donation was revealed by fellow activist Nikolai Alekseyev (one of the organisers of Moscow Pride), who Tweeted, ‘BRAVO and HUGE THANKS to British actress Tilda Swinton for the donation to cover the funerals of our friend and activist Alexey Davydov.’

He added: “Thanks to all who took part in this generous civil act… Alexey was a hero and now he will have a fitting funeral. I am pleased we were able to help in our small way but all the credit belongs to the generous donors and Alexey’s brave activist friends.”

Tilda Swinton Holds Rainbow Flag In Moscow To Protest Russia’s Gay Rights Record

July 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac 3 Comments

tilda-swinton-moscow-rainbow-flag
There’s little doubt that things have gotten a lot worse for gay people in Russia in the last couple of years – just in the last week, President Vladimir Putin has signed laws banning the ‘promotion’ of homosexuality (essentially making any pro-gay public statements illegal) and stopped foreign gay couples from adopting Russian children, as apparently they’re better off in an orphanage than in a loving home.

Now bisexual actress Tilda Swinton has made her own small act of protest against the Russian authorities, holding up the rainbow flag in front of the Kremlin in Red Square. The actress’ rep sent out the photo, adding the messages, “In solidarity. From Russia with love.”

Along with the new laws, for many years cities across Russia have been banning Pride parades and arresting anyone who wants to hold one. Two members of the Punk protest band Pussy Riot remain in jail for their acts in trying to stop the increasingly repressive actions of the Russian government.

The likes of the EU and UN have tried to remind Russia of its obligations under international law not to oppress gay people. The country is a signatory to European Convention on Human Rights, which is supposed to stop countries from discriminating against gay people. However Russia has said it has no obligations to be nice to gay people, as they apparently believe the wording of the convention protects everyone except gays, despite the European Court of Human Rights repeatedly telling them otherwise.

While the situation for gay people has improved in most of the rest of Europe in the last few years, in Russia it’s gone the other way.
