Hanks Wants Michel Hazanavicius For In the Garden of Beasts

September 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Director Michel Hazanavicius is in talks to direct Universal Pictures’ adaptation of Erik Larson’s non-fiction book In the Garden of Beasts, with star Tom Hanks apparently keen to get The Artist helmer onboard. Natalie Portman is also being eyed for the project, according to Deadline.

The film will star Tom Hanks as a Chicago professor, William Dodd, who becomes America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s Germany before the dictator became a threat to the world. On his first trip to Berlin, the professor soaks in the scenery with his daughter Martha (Natalie Portman), who becomes involved with some high ranking members of the Third Reich. Soon after he realises the evil intentions of the Reich and alerts the State Department, only to be met with a cold shoulder.

If Hazanavicius does come onboard, he will rewrite the script, with the hope they can shoot next year.

Cloud Atlas Extended Trailer – Will the ambitious multi-story epic work?

July 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We just posted some of the first images from the Wachowskis’ and Tom Twyker’s ambitious Cloud Atlas, and now Den Of Geek has tipped us off to an extended trailer for the fascinating looking movie, which you can watch right here. The movie, based on David Mitchell’s novel spans hundreds of years, showing how individual lives affect others in the past, present, and future through a series of stories. The actors, including Hugh Grant, Halle Berry, Ben Whishaw, Jim Broadbent and Tom Hanks play different people in each story, jumping between different races and genders. The trailer suggests it could be very good, although it does depend on how the different stories are knitted together. Cloud Atlas should hit cinemas later this year.

Paul Giamatti & Jason Schwartzman Join Saving Mr. Banks

July 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Paul Giamatti, Jason Schwartzman, and Ruth Wilson have joined Disney’s Saving Mr. Banks for director John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side), bolstering a cast that already includes Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks.

The movie is about Mary Poppins author P.L. Travers (Emma Thompson), who was courted for 14 years by Walt Disney (Tom Hanks) for the screen rights to her beloved novel, before she reluctantly agreed. After she didn’t approve of the 1964 classic’s animated sequences, she refused to sell another book to the studio.

Paul Giamatti is playing Ralph, P.L. Travers’ chauffeur when she spends time in Los Angeles. Jason Schwartzman will be Richard Sherman, the songwriter who wrote a number of tunes for Disney classics such as Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Ruth Wilson is the author’s mother in flashback scenes, along with Colin Farrell as P.L. Travers’ father, who inspired the Poppins character of Mr, Banks. (Source: Variety)

Colin Farrell Will Be Saving Mr. Banks

June 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Saving Mr. Banks got off the ground with a strong cast already attached, as Tom Hanks is set to play Walt Disney and Emma Thompson as Mary Poppins author PL Travers. Now Colin Farrell is in negotiations to join the Walt Disney Pictures film, according to Deadline.

The film is about Travers and shifts between her childhood days in early 1900s Queensland, which helped inform her creation of Mary Popping, and her experiences in the 1960s, negotiating with Walt Disney (Tom Hanks) for a big-screen adaptation of her books. She long held out from Disney’s advances, but eventually sold the rights (although she wasn’t happy with the resulting film).

Colin Farrell will play the author’s father, a banker who starts drinking heavily after going through some hard times financially. His hardships had a profound effect on her writing and it was him who Mr. Banks in Mary Poppins was based on.

John Lee Hancock is directing from a screenplay by Kelly Marcel, with shooting scheduled to begin in the autumn.

Tom Hanks’ Son Is Officially Hot!

March 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Tom Hanks offspring we’ve seen the most of is Colin, who basically just looks like a younger, taller version of his father. However there’s also Chester M. Hanks, who now tends to go by the name Chet Haze, which makes him sounds like a porn star, but it actually his rapper/musician name.

Over the weekend he posted some shirtless shots of himself on Twitter, and may we just say we’re impressed. Whoever thought something that hot would have sprung from the Hanks household. However, if you’re hoping he bats for our team, you’re out of luck, as he felt the need to clear things up, tweeting ‘Yo, Shout out to ALL my fans– both straight and gay… #humbled but just so you know I’m straight lmao ok ThankYou’.

John Lee Hancock To Direct Saving Mr. Banks

February 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A few days ago is was revealed that Disney was busy tying up the rights to the script Saving Mr. Banks, with Tom Hanks rumored to play Walt Disney and Meryl Streep as P.L. Travers. Now Deadline reports that Blind Side helmer John Lee Hancock is in early negotiations to direct.

The project tells the story of how Walt Disney waged a 14-year courtship to persuade Australian author P.L. Travers to sell him rights to make a film out of Mary Poppins. The author felt incredibly protective over her story of a nanny with magical powers, which reflected hardships in her own life and her relationship with her father, who died when she was seven. Disney finally convinced her to let him make the film, but she was apparently less than pleased with the animated portions of the finished film.

It’s not known when the movie will shoot, but it seems Disney is moving fast to put all the pieces in place.

Tom Hanks Set To Play Walt Disney?

February 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Disney making a film about Walt Disney is either a perfect fit or too close to home. It may be happening though as Deadline reports the studio is close to picking up Saving Mr. Banks, Kelly Marcel’s script that landed on the 2011 Black List. It already has high-profile talent interested in it, with Tom Hanks reportedly sniffing around to play Walt Disney, with Meryl Streep as author PL Travers.

The fact-based script follows Disney’s 14-year odyssey to get Travers to sell him the screen rights to her novel, Mary Poppins. The book was highly personal for Travers, and reflected hardships in her own life and her relationship with her father, who died when she was seven. As a result she was extremely reluctant to let go of it.

Eventually Disney persuaded her, but while the film became an instant classic, Travers had difficulty with it to the end. She hated the animated sequences in the film so much that she refused to sell any of her other works to Disney.

Nothing’s been signed yet and Hanks and Streep are only rumours at the moment, but expect to hear more when and if Disney buys the script.

Catherine Keener Joins Paul Greengrass’ Captain Phillips

February 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Catherine Keener is always a good addition to a cast, and Paul Greengrass knows that, as he’s just signed her up for his upcoming movie, Captain Phillips. Keener joins Tom Hanks, who’s been attached to the movie for several months.

The project is based on the true story of Maresk Alabama captain Richard Phillips (Hanks), who sacrificed himself to be taken hostage by Somali pirates, so he could save the lives of his crew. He spent three days in captivity before being rescued by a Navy SEAL team in 2009.

Keener will play Phillips’ wife, Andrea Phillips, who never lost faith that her husband would survive the arduous ordeal.

Paul Greengrass is directing Captain Phillips from a screenplay by Billy Ray, which is adapted from Richard Phillips’ own book, A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea. It’s not certain when the movie will shoot, but it’ll probably be fairly soon, as a US release date of March 22nd, 2013 has already been set. (Source: Variety)
