Twixt (DVD)

October 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Val Kilmer, Elle Fanning, Bruce Dern, Ben Chaplin, Joanne Whalley
Director: Francis Ford Coppola
Running Time: 88 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 28th 2013

It’s taken quite a while to get Francis Ford Coppola’s Twixt to the UK, but now it’s here. While famed for the likes of The Godfather and Apocalypse Now, recently Coppola has gone much smaller with Youth Without Youth, Tetro and now Twixt. It’s an odd yet intriguing film, which feels more like the work of someone early in their career than a grand-old-man like Coppola.

Val Kilmer plays Hall Baltimore, a struggling writer who arrives in a strange town that we’re told is a peculiar place where evil may lurk. As Hall attempts to write a book, he gets sucked into an old murder mystery, which spans both everything from possible vampires and a seeming dream-world to a ghost called V and being visited by Edgar Allan Poe. Tobey Maguire & Kristen Wiig Join Will Ferrell’s The Spoils Of Babylon

June 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tobey-maguireIt’s not often a TV series can boast a cast including Tim Robbins, Kristen Wiig, Michael Sheen, Tobey Maguire, Haley Joel Osment, Jessica Alba, Val Kilmer, Steve Tom and Will Ferrell, but The Spoils Of Babylon can. The series comes from Ferrell, Adam McKay, and several other Funny or Die guys, with the show set to air on IFC in the US.

The six-parter will follow a fake book written by fake author Eric Jonrosh (Ferrell). The story will span multiple generations in the oil industry, which allows it to follows plenty of stories, allowing all sorts of famous faces to pop up.

IFC says, ‘The Spoils of Babylon, a century-spanning saga, chronicles the sexy and dramatic lives of the Morehouse family, led by Jonas Morehouse (Robbins), his daughter Cynthia (Wiig) and her adopted brother Devon (Maguire) who made their fortune in the oil business. The series takes viewers from the oil fields of Texas to boardrooms in New York City, through war torn battlefields and velvet-sheeted bedrooms.

‘Cynthia and Devon’s unbridled and taboo passion for one another cannot be prevented. Add in Cynthia’s evil son Winston (Osment), her put upon husband Chet Halner (Sheen), and Devon’s new love interest Dixie Mellonworth (Alba), and the booze, the pills, more passion, more pills and the heartache, and you have a mercurial potboiler. Then add in illegal arms deals, international espionage, the Shah of Iran (Ferrell), and two US Army Generals (Kilmer, Steve Tom) and it begins to overflow with boiling liquid in a pot on a hot stove that is operational.’

Production has already commenced with a 2014 premiere planned.

Disney’s Planes Sneak Peek – Featuring two Top Gun cameos

April 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last week we reported the news that Disney’s Cars spin-off, Planes, was getting a couple of Top Gun from Val Kilmer and Anthony Edwards. Now we can see the evidence of that ourselves in a sneak peek that’s been released, giving us a look at the anthropomorphised aircraft.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From above the world of Cars comes Disney’s Planes, an action-packed 3D animated comedy adventure featuring Dusty (voice of Dane Cook), a plane with dreams of competing as a high-flying air racer. But Dusty’s not exactly built for racing—and he happens to be afraid of heights. So he turns to a seasoned naval aviator who helps Dusty qualify to take on the defending champ of the race circuit. Dusty’s courage is put to the ultimate test as he aims to reach heights he never dreamed possible, giving a spellbound world the inspiration to soar.’

Disney’s Planes takes off in UK cinemas on August 16th 2013, with the US getting it a week before on August 9th.

Willow – 25th Anniversary Edition (Blu-ray)

March 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Warwick Davis, Val Kilmer, Joanne Whalley, Jean Marsh, Patricia Hayes
Director: Ron Howard
Running Time: 126 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: March 11th 2013

If you grew up in the 1980s, there’s probably a special place in your heart for Willow. Produced by George Lucas and directed by Ron Howard, it sadly wasn’t a huge hit when it was first released. So while Lucas originally planned it as the first part of a trilogy, this is the only Willow movie we ever got (although two novels continued the story).

Watching it now, it’s interesting to see how it is essentially a sword & sorcery version of Star Wars. Even in 1987 the comparisons were easy to make in 1987 – the wizened evil ruler of an empire with magical powers and her black-clad henchman, a young man called to a journey he isn’t sure he’s ready for, an aged mentor who teaches the hero the true path, a wise-cracking loner who has to learn the value of being part of something bigger than himself. However there are even more parallels now we’ve had the Star Wars prequels, not least a child with a prophecy hanging over them. [Read more…]
