Focus Trailer – Will Smith turns con man opposite Margot Robbie

October 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

focus-slideWill Smith has been very picky about what movies he’ll star in for the last few years, however he’s got a new one coming up called Focus, where he turns con man who take a younger grafter under his wing (and as you can see from the pic above, he’s certainly been hitting the gym).

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Will Smith stars as Nicky, a seasoned master of misdirection who becomes romantically involved with novice con artist Jess (Margot Robbie). As he’s teaching her the tricks of the trade, she gets too close for comfort and he abruptly breaks it off. Three years later, the former flame—now an accomplished femme fatale—shows up in Buenos Aires in the middle of the high-stakes racecar circuit. In the midst of Nicky’s latest, very dangerous scheme, she throws his plans for a loop… and the consummate con man off his game.’

It’s something a bit different for Will, whose previously been known to turn down roles if his character wasn’t an out-and-out good guy, and that certainly doesn’t seem to be the case here. The movie is due out early 2015. [Read more…]

Jared Leto May Find Brilliance, Replacing Will Smith

June 17, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jared-LetoBefore Dallas Buyers Club, Jared Leto hadn’t made a film since Mr. Nobody in 2009 (largely by choice as he was concentrating on music), but since his Best Supporting Actor win there’s understandably been a lot of interest in him.

Now he may have found a new role, as Deadline reports that he is in early talk to take the lead role in Brilliance. The news comes just a few weeks after the previously attached Will Smith bailed on the movie.

David Koepp (Jurassic Park) came up with the script, based on the Marcus Sakey novel. The book is set in a world where special individuals known as ‘brilliants’ have heightened abilities. The plot follows a government agent whose ‘brilliant’ gift is tracking down terrorists. However he may have met his match when tasked to find a dangerous man in Wyoming with his own set of special skills.

Noomi Rapace is also attached, with Julius Onah (Undefeated) directing.

Will Smith May Get A Concussion In A Ridley Scott Produced NFL Concussion Drama

June 4, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

will-smithLast week Will Smith left the sci-fi movie Brilliance, but now he’s found something else he might want to appear in, as Variety reports he’s in talks to star in a currently untitled drama about the problem of concussions in American Football’s NFL. for producer Ridley Scott, which examines the NFL’s concussion issues.

Assuming he signs on, Smith will play Dr. Bennet Omalu, a forensic neuropathologist who, in 2002, was the first doctor to discover chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in the brain of a professional football player. The movie, based on the 2009 GQ article Game Brain by Jeanne Marie Laskas, is described as a whistleblower tale in the same vein as The Insider, which explores the traumatic price that athletes pay, along with the political, corporate and cultural interests that drive professional sports.

The NFL has been criticised for attacking those who’ve tried to raise the issue, while ignoring the growing evidence of the problem athletes face after they leave the sport due to brain injuries they’ve sustained.

Ridley Scott signed on to direct last Novermber, but now he will just produce. Instead Peter Landesman (Parkland) is set to both direct and write the script, based on the 2009 GQ article Game Brain by Jeanne Marie Laskas.

Will Smith Won’t Come Back For Independence Day Sequel

February 8, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

will-smith-independence-dayFor years there’s been talk of sequels to Independence Day, which came closer to reality a few months ago when Fox set a release date for a follow-up to Roland Emmerich’s 1996 hit. However there was still no news on whether Will Smith would agree to return as Steven Hiller.

Over the years he’s both suggested he would and that he wouldn’t, as even after it appeared that Fox had decided to move forward, he still hadn’t made up his mind. Now Deadline reports that Smith has ‘pretty much decided’ he won’t be back and has informed 20th Century Fox of that fact.

That’s not the end of the movie though, as knowing Smith was undecided Roland Emmerich had screenwriter James Vanderbilt (White House Down) work on two versions of the script, one which centres on Will Smith’s character, and one that doesn’t (speculation is that it’ll move to his son instead). The director and Dean Devlin wrote the first draft of the script, before turning the writing duties over to Vanderbilt.

Apparently the actor’s decision is still not “set in stone,” but it’s looking unlikely he will be back, even though he could probably do with a big blockbuster, considering Men In Black 3 is his only major success since 2007.

The Independence Day sequel is currently set for release on July 1, 2016, almost exactly 20 years after the first movie.

Shawn Levy & Will Smith Up For The City That Sailed

November 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

will-smithFor a while now Will Smith has been circling an adaptation of The City That Sailed. Now he’s firmed up his commitment to the movie, and director Shawn Levy (Night At The Museum, The Internship) has come onboard, according to Deadline.

The rather unusual adventure movie is about ‘a father and daughter on the island of Manhattan as it breaks loose and sails across the Atlantic Ocean’. Luckily this isn’t an OTT disaster film, as the city breaks off after the daughter finds magic candles that makes wishes come true. One of those wishes goes wrong when the city breaks away from the rest of the US and heads off across the ocean.

Audrey Wells is writing the script. There’s no news on when it might shoot, but it won’t be for a while as Levy has to make Night At The Museum 3 first.

A couple of months ago Will Smith signed on to star in Focus, replacing Ben Affleck who’d been circling the movie. Margot Robbie is already set to co-star and now THR reports that 300 star Rodrigo Santoro has joined them.

The film is about a veteran con man (Smith) who takes a young woman (Robbie) under his wing and teaches her the illicit trade before falling for her. Years later, they reunite in Buenos Ares as he is planning a complicated operation. Rodrigo Santoro is playing the target of this con, who’s the owner of an international racing team. He is also trying to win over Margot Robbie’s character.

Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (Crazy Stupid Love) are directing from their own original script (Santoro previously appeared in their movie I Love You Philip Morris). Shooting is scheduled to begin this October in New Orleans and Buenos Ares.
