True Detective (Blu-ray Review)

June 8, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Monaghan, Alexandra Daddario, Kevin Dunn
Director: Cary Fukunaga
Running Time: 440 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: June 9th 2014 (UK)

HBO has certainly got itself a reputation in the last few years for bringing the big screen onto the small screen, whether it’s with films like Behind The Candelabra and The Normal Heart or by getting big name stars to appear in its TV series. With True Detective they lured in Matthew McConaughey (just before he was going to win an Oscar) and Woody Harrelson, as well as Jane Eyre director Cary Fukunaga, for what the makers have describes as an eight-part cinematic experience.

Although that might sound rather hyperbolic, this time it pretty much lives up to the hype, even if it isn’t the total masterpiece some have suggested. [Read more…]

Free Birds (Blu-ray)

March 23, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson, Amy Poehler, George Takei, Colm Meaney
Director: Jimmy Hayward
Running Time: 91 mins
Certificate: U
Release Date: March 24th 2014

There’s always an issue with movies about things such as American Football and Thanksgiving. While you can see why they’d be popular in the US, they don’t always travel well, as most other countries don’t have those traditions. That’s particularly true with family films, as many youngsters won’t even know what Thanksgiving is.

Free Birds seems to have realised this though, so that while non-US youngsters won’t get the nuance of the founding fathers and why turkeys are the preferred meal, it does at least make sure it sets out the basics so they won’t be completely lost. [Read more…]

Woody Harrelson Joins The Amazing Cast Of Triple Nine

March 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

woody-harrelsonWoody Harrelson has had a good few months, starting with a massive hit with Hunger Games: Catching Fire, followed by a critically lauded turn in HBO’s True Detective. Now he’s got a new big-screen role as he’s signed on to star opposite the likes of Casey Affleck and Cate Blanchett in the cop drama Triple Nine, according to Deadline.

The movie is about a group of crooked cops who are blackmailed by the Russian Mafia to pull off a seemingly impossible heist. The only way to do it appears to be to kill an unsuspecting rookie cop, but things take a left turn when the young man they’ve targeted gets away.

In case you were wondering, the police code ‘triple nine’ means there is an officer down.

Harrelson will play Sergeant Jeffrey Allen, the uncle of Casey Affleck’s character. The awesome cast also includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Christoph Waltz, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Winslet, Aaron Paul, Teresa Palmer, Gal Gadot and Michael Pena.

John Hillcoat (Lawless) is set to direct from a script by Matt Cook. Triple Nine will shoot this summer.

It’s just a couple of weeks until The Hunger Games: Catching Fire hits cinemas, and now we’ve got a clip of Haymitch (Woody Harrelson) telling Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) exactly what her new position in life is supposed to be.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.

‘THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE is directed by Francis Lawrence, and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. The novel on which the film is based is the second in a trilogy that has over 50 million copies in print in the U.S. alone. THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE opens on November 22, 2013.’ [Read more…]

New Free Birds Trailer – Woody Harrelson & Owen Wilson try to change Thanksgiving

September 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Turkeys aren’t well-known for their time-traveling abilities, but that’s being remedied with Free Birds, a new CG animated movie from Horton Hears A Who! helmer Jimmy Hayward.

The film features the voices of Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson as two turkeys from opposite sides of the tracks who must put aside their differences and team up to travel back in time to change the course of history – and get turkey off the Thanksgiving menu for good.

Amy Poehler, Dan Fogler, Lesley Nicol, George Takei, Colm Meaney, Keith David, Eddie “Piolin” Sotelo, and Dwight Howard also provide voices for the film. It won’t be too surprising to hear this is getting a November 1st pre-Thanksgiving release in the US, with it coming to the UK on November 29th. [Read more…]

Now You See Me – Take a look at the first four minutes of the Jesse Eisenberg thriller

May 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Audiences weren’t that interested in magic with The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, but director Louis Leterrier will be hoping for more from Now You See Me. Now the first four minutes of the movie have popped up online, so we can get a good taste for the film.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Louis Letterier’s movie sees ‘The Four Horsemen, a magic super-group led by the charismatic ATLAS (Jesse Eisenberg), perform a pair of high-tech magic shows, first astonishing audiences by robbing a bank on another continent, and then exposing a white-collar criminal and funneling his millions into the audience members’ bank accounts.

‘FBI Special Agent DYLAN (Mark Ruffalo) is determined to make the magicians pay for their crimes—and to stop them before they pull off what promises to be an even more audacious heist. But he’s forced to partner with ALMA (Melanie Laurent), an Interpol detective about whom he is instantly suspicious. Out of desperation he turns to THADDEUS (Morgan Freeman), a famed magic debunker, who claims the bank heist was accomplished using disguises and video trickery. One thing Dylan and Alma agree on is that the Horsemen must have an outside point person, and that finding him (or her) is key to ending the magicians’ crime spree. Could it be Thaddeus? Or Alma? Or could it really be…magic?

‘As pressure mounts and the world awaits the Horsemen’s spectacular final trick, Dylan and Alma race to find an answer. But it soon becomes painfully clear that staying one step ahead of these masters of illusion is beyond the skills of any one man—or woman.’

The movie is released May 31st in the US and July 3rd in the UK. [Read more…]
