The 9th Life Of Louis Drax (DVD Review) – Jamie Dornan gets mysterious and magical realist

February 5, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Aaron Paul, Aiden Longworth, Jamie Dornan, Oliver Platt, Sarah Gadon
Director: Alexandre Aja
Running Time: 108 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: February 6th 2017 (UK)

The biggest problem with The 9th Life Of Louis Drax is the constant sense that this is a movie that could have been absolutely brilliant, but it sadly isn’t. It’s not bad, and there’s plenty that’s interesting about it (although it could have been fascinating), but it never quite manages to work out what it’s doing.

The titular Louis Drax is an accident prone nine-year-old boy, whose parents have recently separated. After falling from a cliff on an outing with his mother and father, he is rushed to the hospital in a coma, where he comes under the care of Dr. Allan Pascal (Jamie Dornan). Louis also needs protection, as it’s believed his father, Peter (Aaron Paul), caused the accident and is now on the run. [Read more…]

The 9th Life Of Louis Drax Trailer – Jamie Dornan heads into a young boy’s mind

June 28, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jamie-dornan-9th-life-of-louis-drax-pic1Jamie Dornan isn’t spending all his time in the Red Room of Fifty Shades Of Grey, as before the sequel to that movie arrives, he’s starring in the thriller The 9th Life Of Louis Drax. The first trailer for the movie has now arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘After surviving eight near-death accidents throughout his unlucky life, Louis Drax [Aiden Longworth] plunges off a steep cliff on his ninth birthday. While police investigate the cause of Louis’ near-fatal fall and the whereabouts of his violent father Peter [Aaron Paul], acclaimed neurologist Dr. Allan Pascal [Jamie Dornan] uses unorthodox techniques to try to tap into the boy’s unconscious mind and reveal the truth about the events that led to his condition. But as he’s drawn deeper and deeper into the mystery of Louis’ seeming ability to cheat death, the doctor finds himself falling for Louis’ mother, Natalie [Sarah Gadon]. As new clues emerge in the case, a shocking revelation changes the fates of Louis Drax and everyone around him.’

Alexandre Aja is directing the movie. It’ll be in cinemas later this year. [Read more…]

Horns (DVD Review)

March 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Juno Temple, Max Minghella, Joe Anderson
Director: Alexandre Aja
Running Time: 115 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 16th 2015 (UK)

Horns is a certainly a bit of an odd film, not least because it can’t quite decide what it is – comedy, horror, fable, fantasy, thriller, murder mystery, drama – flitting between them all with little sense of consistency. It’s probably this difficulty in pigeonholing the movie that has limited its audience so far, but in many ways that’s a shame, as while very uneven it is oddly entertaining and just a little beguiling.

Daniel Radcliffe is Ig Perrish, whose girlfriend (Juno Temple) has been murdered and everyone in his small town has decided he’s the killer, despite there not being enough evidence to charge him with anything. Things get a little bizarre when he wakes up one morning to discover he’s grown horns out of his forehead, and that he now has the power to get people to admit to all the things they’d normally keep hidden away (he discovers a lot of these things involve what they’d really like to do to him, as they believe he’s gotten away with murder). February 1, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jamie-dornan-9th-life-of-louis-drax-pic1It’s only a couple of weeks until Jamie Dornan’s star power is likely to shoot through the roof thanks to his role as Christian Grey in Fifty Shades Of Grey, but he’s already got a new movie in the works, as he’s starring in The 9th Life of Louis Drax.

Now the first image from the movie has arrived, via Empire, showing the actor hooked up to a machine while in a hospital.

Based on based on Liz Jensen’s best-selling novel, the 9th Life of Louis Drax begins on Louis Drax’s (Aiden Longworth) 9th birthday, when he miraculously survives a near fatal fall. His doctor Allan Pascal (Jamie Dornan) finds himself tangled between his professional responsibility and his growing affections for the boy’s mother (Sarah Gadon). When Louis’ father (Aaron Paul) comes under suspicion, Pascal realizes other mysterious forces may be at work that test the boundaries of fantasy and reality.

Alexandre Aja is directing from a screenplay by Max Minghella (who took on the project following the death of his father, English Patient director Anthony Minghella, who’d previously been developing the movie).

The movie should be in cinemas later this year.

Horns-quad-PosterThere are quite a few people out there who’d like to see Daniel Radcliffe with a horn. Well now’s your chance!

Jamie Dornan Up For The 9th Life of Louis Drax

August 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

fifty-shades-pic1Hollywood obviously thinks Fifty Shades Of Grey has the potential to turn Jamie Dornan into a big star, as the Irish actor is already booking new roles, with Miramax announcing  Dornan will star in the Alexandre Aja (Horns, The Hills Have Eyes) directed movie, The 9th Life of Louis Drax.

Max Minghella, who’s best known as an actor (The Internship, The Social Network), makes his screenwriting debut. It’s not too surprising he’s good with words as he is the son of Oscar-winning writer/director Anthony Minghella. Indeed when the film rights were purchased back in 2004, it was the plan for the English Patient and Talented Mr. Ripley helmer to adapt it himself. Sadly Anthony died in 2008 and Max has now taken over.

The movie is based on Liz Jensen’s best-selling novel of the same title which, ‘begins on Louis Drax’s 9th birthday, when he suffers a near-fatal fall. In order to reveal the strange circumstances surrounding the young boy’s accident – Dr. Allan Pascal (Jamie Dornan) is drawn into a thrilling mystery, testing the boundaries of fantasy and reality.’

Aja comments, “Max’s script takes us on a very emotional journey through the deep recesses of the mind and on a suspenseful Hitchcockian ride. I was drawn to the poignant family drama and the supernatural elements, and am excited to bring this rich and complex story to life.”

Filming will commence this October in Vancouver, Canada.

July 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment
