Chiwetel Ejiofor Courted For Marvel’s Doctor Strange

January 24, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Chiwetel-EjioforIt looks like the excellent Chiwetel Ejiofor may be joining the Marvel Universe, as THR reports that he’s being courted for a major role in Doctor Strange, although it’s not 100% what that role might be. It’s certainly not a done deal yet as they’re only in early talks, but it appears clear Marvel wants him to star alongside Benedict Cumberbatch’s title character.

The current speculation is that he’d play Doctor Strange’s mentor, the Ancient One, although it’s also possible he may be up for a more villainous role.

Scott Derrickson is set to direct the movie which follows the title character, Doctor Strange, who is a former neurosurgeon, a practicing sorcerer, and serves as the Sorcerer Supreme, the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats.

A July 8th, 2016 release date has been set.

Benedict Cumberbatch Will Be Marvel’s Doctor Strange

October 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Benedict-CumberbatchBack in June it was rumoured that Benedict Cumberbatch was one of the frontrunners for the title role in Marvel’s Doctor Strange. However since then talk of him for the part have been supplanted by a long list of other actors from Ryan Gosling to Ethan Hawke to Jake Gyllenhaal to Jared Leto.

However now Benedict has leapfrogged them all and bagged the role, as he is officially in talks for the role, with most expecting him to sign on shortly. It’s believed that previously there were difficulties with Cumberbatch’s schedule, but now that Marvel has pushed back the shoot a little, it’s easier for him to squeeze the film in.

Scott Derrickson is set to direct the movie, with a July 8th, 2016 release date set.

While Cumberbatch fans will no doubt be happy, it will also have them wondering whether this makes more episodes of Sherlock less likely.

Ewan McGregor, Matthew McConaughey, Jake Gyllenhaal & More On The Doctor Strange Shortlist

October 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ewan-mcgregorA couple of months ago it seemed Marvel has sewn up the casting of Doctor Strange with Joaquin Phoenix in talks for the role. However he passed on the role and so the studio has been on the lookout again.

Variety is now reporting that Marvel has a shortlist of the people they may want, with some suggesting Ewan McGregor is now the frontrunner, with Ethan Hawke, Matthew McConaughey, Jake Gyllenhaal, Oscar Isaac, and Jared Leto also in the mix.

While the list ranges from big names to those still rising up the ladder, it’s suggested Marvel would prefer a well-known name to lead the film, presumably because of concerns about lacking of recognition for the character.

However all of the them could fit the bill, as even Oscar Isaac is likely to be a much bigger name than he is now after Star Wars Episode VII. It’s thought McConaughey may be too big a name and too busy, unless he really wants to join the Marvel universe, while Gyllenhaal has a very mixed record in big films.

Joaquin Phoenix in Talks For Marvel’s Doctor Strange

July 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

camp-the-documentary-joaquin-phoenixVarious names have been rumoured for the title role in Marvel’s Doctor Strange, such as Benedict Cumberbatch. However the man who’s likely to take the job has slightly come out of left field, as THR reports that Joaquin Phoenix is in talks for the role.

Although he hasn’t accepted yet, it’s believed Marvel is hoping to get him to accept quickly and they may even officially announce him during their Comic-Con 2014 panel. It’s believed a sticking point might arise if Marvel wants Phoenix to sign one of their usual long-term contracts, as he’s more likely to want a per-film deal.

If he does sign on, it’d certainly be something different for the actor, who has generally steered clear of big blockbuster type movies. However it’s suggested co-stars such as Jeremy Renner (The Immigrant), Scarlett Johansson (Her), and Josh Brolin (Inherent Vice) have helped convince him it’s worth becoming part of the Marvel Universe.

If you don’t know the character, Doctor Strange is a former neurosurgeon, a practicing sorcerer, and serves as the Sorcerer Supreme, the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats.

Sinister’s Scott Derrickson Is Going To The Outer Limits

June 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Scott Derrickson is massively in demand all of a sudden. Just a couple of weeks after he landed the gig directing  Marvel’s Doctor Strange, it’s been revealed that he’s writing a big-screen adaptation of the classic sci-fi series The Outer Limits alongside his Sinister partner C. Robert Cargill.

THR broke the news, with Derrickson himself confirming it with the Tweet, ‘My screenwriting future has LIMITS’ and the pic below.

scott-derrickson-outer-limits

The original Outer Limits TV series ran from 1963 to 1965, with each episode opening with the cryptic message, “There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission….” Each instalment had a a different, Twilight Zone-ish, story.

Anthologies haven’t tended to work well on the big screen, but rather than trying to mimic the fact each episode of the show was completely different, the movie will be based on the ‘Demon With a Glass Hand’ episode, written by sci-fi legend Harlan Ellison. It starred Robert Culp as a man who wakes up with no memory of the previous 10 days. However he has a computerized left hand that helps him escape from an alien race who believe he is the key to survival.

Will Tom Hardy Or Benedict Cumberbatch Be Marvel’s Doctor Strange?

June 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

tom-hardyWith the news a couple of days ago that Scott Derrickson will direct Marvel’s comic book movie Doctor Strange, it was inevitable that rumours and speculation would emerge about who would play the character.

Now we’ve got two names to mull over, as Deadline reports that Marvel is apparently considering Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch for the title role. Earlier this week it was suggested that Oscar winner Jared Leto may also be up for the part.

Doctor Strange was mentioned in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and it’s known Marvel has been developing a stand-alone film for the character for some time. However while a director has been announced, at the moment we don’t know exactly when it will be released.

2016 is the presumption at this point, which would mean Marvel will probably be hoping to fill the title role fairly soon. However at this stage its not known if there have been any talks at all with Cumberbatch, Hardy or Leto’s people, or whether at the moment the actors are merely on a wishlist.

Scott Derrickson Announced As Marvel’s Doctor Strange Director

June 3, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

scott-derricksonMarvel may be rushing around trying to find a replacement for Edgar Wright on Ant Man, but they’ve found someone for another of their upcoming movies, as THR reports that Scott Derrickson has been hired to helm Doctor Strange.

A Doctor Strange movie has been in development for some time, and it’s been known that Marvel was hoping the movie would part of Phase 3 of its universe. The presumption is that the film will be released in 2016.

Doctor Strange is a former neurosurgeon, a practicing sorcerer, and serves as the Sorcerer Supreme, the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer had been writing the script, but it appears Marvel is on the lookout for new writers, with Jon Aibel and Glenn Berger said to be in the mix.

Derrickson had a major success with The Exorcism of Emily Rose, but his first attempt at big budget studio filmmaking, The Day the Earth Stood Still, didn’t work out so well. However Sinister was a hit and it’s believed Marvel were also impressed with his work on the upcoming thriller Deliver Us from Evil, and so thought it was a good idea to give him another shot at a major special effects flick.

It’ll be interesting to see how Marvel handles Doctor Strange, as the character is more on the magic side of their comic books rather than the more sci-fi heavy superheroes. With Thor they took the magical side and presented it as simply being sci-fi with a fantasy element. Presumably they’ll take a similar tack with Doctor Strange, so that he doesn’t seem out of place with the rest of the Marvel universe.

New Deliver Us From Evil Trailer – Eric Bana gets into exorcism in Scott Derrickson’s latest

April 11, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Scott Derrickson had a big hit with Sinister (which nearly makes us forgive him for the catastrophe that was his Day The Earth Stood Still remake), now he’s coming back with Deliver Us From Evil, which stars Eric Bana and Edgar Ramirez as a cop and a priest who team up to take on a series of possessions.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In DELIVER US FROM EVIL, New York police officer Ralph Sarchie (Eric Bana), struggling with his own personal issues, begins investigating a series of disturbing and inexplicable crimes.

‘He joins forces with an unconventional priest (Edgar Ramírez), schooled in the rituals of exorcism, to combat the frightening and demonic possessions that are terrorizing their city. Inspired by the book, which details Sarchie’s bone-chilling real-life cases.’

The movie hits US cinemas on July 2nd and arrives in the UK on August 22nd. [Read more…]

Joel McHale Up To Join Eric Bana In The Thriller Beware The Night

May 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Joel-McHaleCommunity star Joel McHale has mainly stuck to comedy when he’s dipped his toe into the movies, such as Ted and What’s Your Number?. However now he’s heading towards thriller territory, as THR reports that he’s in final talks to join Eric Bana in Beware The Night, with Sean Harris (Prometheus) also likely to sign on.

Scott Derrickson (Sinister) is set to direct from a script he co-wrote with frequent writing partner Paul Harris Boardman. The movie follows a New York police officer investigating real life demon possessions, exorcisms and werewolves after dark. McHale is set to be Bana’s partner, a tough, experienced cop. Harris will be the creepy antagonist, a soldier who’s possibly possessed by the devil. Olivia Munn will play Bana’s wife, and Edgar Ramirez has been cast as a Jesuit priest.

It’s not 100% clear when the movie will shoot, but it appears McHale will slot it in between A Friggin’ Christmas Miracle, a comedy co-starring Robin Williams and Lauren Graham, which he’s just filmed, and Blended, with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, which he’ll film later this summer. After that he’s headed back to the Community set for a fifth season.

Sinister 2 Moves Forward With Original Writer Returning

March 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sinister-slideEven before Sinister was released, writers Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill were already talking about a sequel, however it’s only now that the film has been officially announced. Deadline says producer Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity, Insidious) is also back on-board, bringing us the movie through his Blumhouse Productions company.

Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill will once more write the screenplay, although Scott will not return as the director. As a result a search is on for a new filmmaker to tackle the follow-up. Derrickson can’t direct as he’s busy elsewhere, developing the video game adaptation Deus Ex: Human Revolution, with he will also co-write with C. Robert Cargill.

Sinister is a true crime author who moves into a house where a family was brutally murdered. He discovers that an evil presence lurks within his new abode, and that his family is in serious danger. The film sets itself up for a sequel by suggesting this is just one chapter in an ongoing sequence of paranormal murcer.

Sinister grossed more than $77 million worldwide from just a $3 million budget. Ethan Hawke is unlikely to return to star.
