The Legend Of Hercules (DVD Review)

August 3, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Kellan Lutz, Gaia Weiss, Scott Adkins, Liam Garrigan, Liam McIntyre
Director: Renny Harlin
Running Time: 94 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: August 4th 2014 (UK)

The Legend Of Hercules is less a movie than a collection of other films and TV series that have been dissected and then stitched back together to make something new (sort of). Fans of Greek mythology probably won’t be that impressed either, as while it takes little bits of the legends it creates its own story to turn it into a kind of superhero origin story.

The tyrannical King Amphitryon (Scott Adkins) is renowned as the most fearsome warrior around, who no one can beat in battle. His wife, Alcmene (Roxanne McKee), is told by a messenger of Hera that she will have a son by Zeus –who will be called Hercules – and whose destiny is to restore peace to the land. Amphitryon isn’t impressed by this new addition to the family, who he decides will be called Alcides, and is never shy about telling him he’s not as good as older brother Iphicles (Liam Garrigan). Lone Survivor Tops The US Box Office With The Second Best January Opening Ever

January 13, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lone-survivor-posterA few months ago there was talk of Oscars for Lone Survivor. While that talk has died down, the film can take plenty of solace from an exceedingly good US opening, where it took $38.5 million over the weekend (it had been playing on a couple of screens before that, but only so it could qualify for the Oscars, which demand a movie opened on at least one screen in LA or New York before December 31st).

It’s the second biggest January opening ever after Cloverfield’s $40.1 million. It’s also a lot better than most other movies that have concentrated on the recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The only other new entry was The Legend Of Hercules, which placed fourth with $8.6 million. It’s not a great start but about in line with expectations due to its lack of marquee names. Kellan Lutz is Hercules, but even his copious shirtlessness couldn’t turn it into a hit. Modest marketing and the fact there was little to make it stand out didn’t help either.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of January 10th-12th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Lone Survivor $38.5 $38.8
2 Frozen $15.0 $317.6
3 The Wolf Of Wall Street $9.0 $78.5
4 The Legend Of Hercules $8.6 $8.6
5 American Hustle $8.6 $101.5
6 The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug $8.0 $242.2
7 August: Osage County $7.3 $7.8
8 Saving Mr. Banks $6.5 $68.9
9 Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones $6.3 $28.4
10 Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues $6.1 $118.5

New The Legend Of Hercules Trailer – Kellan Lutz goes ancient Greek and shirtless

December 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Next year is going to be buff and Greek, with 300: Rise Of An Empire and two Hercules movie, one starring Dwayne Johnson and the other with (a very shirtless) Kellan Lutz. Now a new trailer for the latter has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In Ancient Greece 1200 B.C., a queen succumbs to the lust of Zeus to bear a son promised to overthrow the tyrannical rule of the king and restore peace to a land in hardship. But this prince, Hercules, knows nothing of his real identity or his destiny. He desires only one thing: the love of Hebe, Princess of Crete, who has been promised to his own brother. When Hercules learns of his greater purpose, he must choose: to flee with his true love or to fulfill his destiny and become the true hero of his time. The story behind one of the greatest myths is revealed in this action-packed epic – a tale of love, sacrifice and the strength of the human spirit.’

The Renny Harlin directed movie is out this January. [Read more…]

Kellan Lutz Gets His Shirt Off In New The Legend Of Hercules Pics

December 13, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Early next year The Legend Of Hercules hits cinemas, and it seems it’s not in denial that one of its main selling point is the hunkiness of The Legend Of Hercules. All of the promotion so far has relied on the Twilight star’s shirtlessness, and that’s true of many of these new images that have arrived, and which you can see above and below.

The story behind one of the greatest myths is revealed in this action-packed epic – a tale of love, sacrifice and the strength of the human spirit.’

The Renny Harlin directed movie is out in January. Of course it’s not the only Hercules film out next year, as another one starring Dwayne Johnson is due out in the summer – that will undoubtedly involve plenty of shirtless guys too. [Read more…]

Full Hercules: The Legend Begins Trailer – Kellan Lutz gets buff and action-packed

October 13, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A couple of days ago, a very brief teaser for Hercules: The Legend Begins landed. No the full promo has arrived, showing off the rather 300-ish visuals for the Renny Harlin directed movie, as well as Kellan Lutz looking very buff in the title role.

Early suggestions had said this would keep the supernatural aspects of the legends of Hercules, but it appears from this trailer that he’s not got any full-on superpowers – although he will be engaging in the usual unlikely action hero shenanigans and certainly appears to be incredibly strong.

The story behind one of the greatest myths is revealed in this action-packed epic – a tale of love, sacrifice and the strength of the human spirit.’

A second Hercules movie is also due out next year, with the other starring Dwayne Johnson, with Brett Ratner directing.

Kellan Lutz Is Buff & Shirtless In New Hercules 3D Pics

August 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hercules-3d-kellan-lutz1There are two different Hercules movies in production at the moment, with Kellan Lutz taking the title role in Hercules 3D, while Dwayne Johnson is playing the legendary character Hercules: The Thracian Wars. Now a new pic from the former has arrived, which suggests the film has taken inspiration from the Spartacus TV series for its look (even though Hercules is Greek rather than Roman, but never mind).

Renny Harlin is directing the movie, which is said to centre on the love between the son of Zeus and the mortal princess of Crete, who was promised to his older brother despite her love for Hercules.

It appears this one will keep the mythological aspects of Hercules, while Johnson’s movie is said to take a more realistic take on the legends. Hercules 3D will be out next year.

Take a look at the first pics below.

Spartacus’ Liam McIntyre Joins Kellan Lutz In Hercules 3D

April 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

liam-mcintyreThe battle of the Hercules movies is fast ramping up, with Dwayne Johnson and Brett Ratner teaming for a non-mythological take that will shoot this summer, while Renny Harlin has hired Kellan Lutz to his Greek hero in Hercules 3D. Now the latter movie has a new cast member, with Spartacus himself, Liam McIntyre swapping Rome for Greece, according to THR.

According to the trade, ‘McIntyre will play a young army captain who becomes Hercules’ most trusted battlefield companion. After an evil king deceives them, Hercules and the captain are sold into slavery and must fight side by side to earn their freedom.’

Harlin comments on the casting, “He’s infinitely entertaining to watch. I am lucky to have him play military commander, Sotiris, Hercules’ best friend. Their relationship begins antagonistic and develops into a close bond, forged in battle.”

The $70 million movie will shoot this summer in Bulgaria. The movie will mark Aussie actor McIntyre’s first feature film following his Spartacus success.

Kellan Lutz Nabs Hercules 3D Lead Role

April 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Kellan Lutz shirtless

The battle of the rival Hercules movies heats up with the news, via THR, that Kellan Lutz has nabbed the title role in Renny Harlin’s $70 million take on the legendary Greek character. The film is in direct competition with another Hercules movie, which Brett Ratner is slated to direct with Dwayne Johnson set to star. Both movies are due to shoot in the next few months.

Harlin’s flick is going under the title Hercules 3D, and while exact plot details are being kept secret, it is known that it will centre on the love between the son of Zeus and the mortal princess of Crete, who was promised to his older brother despite her love for Hercules. It seems this film will delve into the more mythological aspect of Hercules, while the idea behind Johnson’s film is to be slightly more realistic by eschewing the supernatural elements.

Harlin comments on the casting, “It takes more than a good physique to portray the most legendary, mythological personality in history — and Kellan has exactly that, personality. He’s not afraid to explore the strengths and vulnerabilities of the character, and he impressed me with his passion and heart.”

It won’t be Lutz’s first brush with Greek mythology, as he played Poseidon in 2011’s Immortals.
