Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (Cinema Review)

July 29, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner
Director: Christopher McQuarrie
Running Time: 131 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: July 31st 2015

It seems hard to believe that we are now on the fifth instalment in this franchise, and after 19 years it thankfully shows no signs of stopping. I should state that for me this is a hard film to review as I am a fan of the previous entries, and the latest plays it safe by sticking to the tried and tested formula of its predecessors.

Some reviewers are calling it the best entry in the franchise (which I can’t disagree with) and others have slated it for not adding anything new (which I also can’t disagree with). But for me the most important thing I want from any film is to be entertaining and fun, and this film definitely ticks both those boxes.

In Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Ethan Hunt (Cruise) and crew have to take down the Syndicate, an elite and ungoverned ‘anti IMF (Impossible Missions Force)’ that has set out to change the world through global attacks and assassinations. [Read more…]

New Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation Trailer – Tom Cruise goes to war with the Syndicate

June 4, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mission-impossible-rogue-nation-poster2-slideIt would seem the Mission: Impossible franchise has decided it wants to sit halfway between a Marvel superhero movie and a James Bond flick, but considering the amount of money those films make, that’s probably not a bad decision for Paramount to have made.

Synopsis: ‘With the IMF disbanded, and Ethan (Tom Cruise) out in the cold, the team now faces off against a network of highly skilled special agents, the Syndicate. These highly trained operatives are hellbent on creating a new world order through an escalating series of terrorist attacks. Ethan gathers his team and joins forces with disavowed British agent Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), who may or may not be a member of this rogue nation, as the group faces their most impossible mission yet.’

Tom Cruise star alongside Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner and Ving Rhames, and adds to the cast Rebecca Ferguson and Alec Baldwin

Alec Baldwin & Rebecca Ferguson In Talks for Mission: Impossible 5

July 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

alec-baldwinJust a few months ago Alec Baldwin suggested he was retiring from the public eye after facing criticism for once more yelling a gay slur at someone during an altercation. However he seems to have changed his mind, as Deadline reports he’s in talks for Mission: Impossible 5.

He’s not the only one, as Variety adds that Rebecca Ferguson is apparently to play the female lead, who is apparently some sort of assassin. Jessica Chastain was offered the role back in April, but she ultimately passed because she could not commit enough time to the extensive shoot, and so now Paramount is looking towards someone who’s a little less well known.

Baldwin meanwhile would be a high-ranking CIA officer who oversees the division lead by Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt. The role has been compared to Laurence Fishburne’s Theodore Brassel in 2006’s Mission: Impossible III.

Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton, Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg are expected to reprise their roles from 2011’s Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol. Christopher McQuarrie (Jack Reacher) is directing from a script by Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3). The film is currently due for release on December 25th, 2015.

Simon Pegg Coming Back For Mission: Impossible 5

November 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Simon-PeggA few days ago Paramount announced a Christmas Day 2015 release date for Mission: Impossible 5. Now they’re firming up actors to join Tom Cruise, actor Simon Pegg has confirmed to MTV that he is coming back as tech specialist Benji Dunn.

He said, “Yes, absolutely. I’m looking forward to doing that. I’ve already started eating one carrot a day in order to be in shape.”

Pegg first appeared as Dunn in 2006’s Mission: Impossible III. He reprised the role in director Brad Bird’s 2011’s blockbuster Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol. Christopher McQuarrie is directing Mission: Impossible 5 from a screenplay by Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3). It has been rumoured that Ghost Protocol stars Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton and Ving Rhames will also come back, although their involvement has not been confirmed.

Mission: Impossible 5 Set For Christmas Day 2015 Release

November 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mission-impossible-ghost-protocol-posterIt’s been suggest Tom Cruise is keen to get Mission: Impossible 5 out as soon as possible, with some suggestions we might even get it before the end of 2014. However Paramount Pictures has now announced we’ll be making a little longer, as they’ve dated it for December 25th, 2015, according to TheWrap.

At the moment the only other movie set for that date is Warner Bros.’ Live by Night, Ben Affleck’s adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s novel. However, it’s still going to have a battle for action fans, as it’s coming just a week after the highly-anticipated Star Wars: Episode VII. Warcraft and Kung Fu Panda 3 will also be out not long before it as well.

Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, which earned more than $700 million worldwide after it opened just a few days before Christmas in 2011. Tom Cruise is producing and returning as IMF agent Ethan Hunt. Christopher McQuarrie (Jack Reacher) is directing from a script by Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3). Production is set to start next February in London.

Christopher McQuarrie Confirmed To Direct Mission: Impossible 5

August 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

christopher-mcquarrieWay back last November is was first reported that Christopher McQuarrie was in talks to direct Mission: Impossible 5. It’s taken a long time to sort things out, but now the man himself has revealed on Twitter that he’s taken the job, simply saying, ‘Mission: Accepted’.

Tom Cruise is already signed up for the movie, and it’s likely his influence that got McQuarrie onboard. Cruise and McQuarrie have a relationship that started with the 2008 historical drama Valkyrie, which Christopher wrote. More recently Tom starred in Jack Reacher, which McQuarrie wrote and directed. The filmmaker has also provided uncredited rewrites for Tom Cruise movies such as Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol and the upcoming The Edge Of Tomorrow, so he really does seem to be a bit of a fave with the star.

Iron Man 3 scribe Drew Pearce signed up in May to write the movie, with reports then suggesting the movie was on an accelerated schedule as Cruise wants to shoot the movie this autumn.

The last Mission: Impossible movie, directed by Brad Bird, took nearly $700 million at the global box office, and with the likes of Brian De Palma, John Woo and JJ Abrams helming earlier instalments, McQuarrie has big shoes to fill.

Iron Man 3 Co-scribe Drew Pearce Writing Mission: Impossible 5

May 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

drew-pearceMission: Impossible 5 is moving into high gear, with  Tom Cruise recently committing to starring and Jack Ryan helmer Christopher McQuarrie reportedly in talks to direct. Many assumed he would also write the movie, but now THR reports that Iron Man 3 co-writer Drew Pearce is in talks to script M:I 5.

He seems like a good choice, although at the moment there’s no news on the direction he’ll take the plot and what Ethan Hunt will be up to this time around.

Pearce is going to have to work pretty fast though, as Cruise wants to shoot the movie this autumn, giving them a relatively limited time to get the script up to par and all the pre-production sorted – something that can take ages on a movie of this scale.

Tom Cruise Commits To Mission: Impossible 5

May 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Tom-cruiseWhen Mission: Impossible 4 was announced, it was suggested Tom Cruise was planning to hand the franchise on to another agent. However when his other films started faltering at the box office, his role in the movie was expanded.

Then it became one of his biggest grossing movies ever, which seems to have made Cruise realise this isn’t a golden egg he should leave behind, as Deadline has confirmed that he’s now officially committed to appear as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible 5.

Jack Reacher helmer Christopher McQuarrie has been mentioned to direct the movie, but no deal has been finalised yet. McQuarrie also wrote the script for Cruise’s 2008 World War II drama Valkyrie, and provided uncredited screenplay polishes on All You Need Is Kill and Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol.
