New The Mummy Trailer – Tom Cruise is up against the long-dead

April 2, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Universal has a lot riding on The Mummy, as they’re hoping they can rival Disney/Marvel and Warner/DC’s interconnected coming book universes, with a monster movie universe. They’re kicking that off with The Mummy, and they’ve got some a-list talent to help them, with Tom Cruise starring. Russell Crowe is also due to show up as Dr. Jeykyll/Mr. Hyde.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Tom Cruise headlines a spectacular, all-new cinematic version of the legend that has fascinated cultures all over the world since the dawn of civilisation: The Mummy.

‘Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension. From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

Cruise is joined by a cast including Annabelle Wallis (upcoming King Arthur, television’s Peaky Blinders), Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), Courtney B. Vance (TV’s American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson) and Oscar® winner Russell Crowe (Gladiator). The creative team on this action-adventure event is led by director/producer Alex Kurtzman and producer Chris Morgan, who have been instrumental in growing some of the most successful franchises of the past several years—with Kurtzman writing or producing entries in the Transformers, Star Trek and Mission: Impossible series, and Morgan being the narrative engineer of the Fast & Furious saga as it has experienced explosive growth from its third chapter on. Sean Daniel, who produced the most recent Mummy trilogy, produces alongside Kurtzman and Morgan.’

The film is due out in June. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]

The Mummy Trailer – Tom Cruise launches an interconnected monster universe

December 5, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mummy-slideThe main aim of this trailer seems to be to suggest that this will be a very different proposition than the Brendan Fraser starring Mummy movies. And with Tom Cruise starring and a full-on blockbuster tone, Universal is also trying its best to ensure that their plans for an interconnected monster movie universe get off to a good start.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Tom Cruise headlines a spectacular, all-new cinematic version of the legend that has fascinated cultures all over the world since the dawn of civilisation: The Mummy.

The film is due out June 2017. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Russell Crowe May Join Tom Cruise In The Mummy Reboot

May 4, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

russell-croweThere was major surprise when it was announced that Tom Cruise had attached himself to star in Universal’s planned reboot of The Mummy franchise. Part of the reason is was so unexpected is that few had thought such an established star would have either been sought or would have wanted to sign on. However, then it turned out Cruise wasn’t the only big name the studio was after for its interconnected monster universe, with Johnny Depp signing on to play The Invisible Man in a new, standalone movie.

Now it looks like Russell Crowe may be joining the throng, as THR reports he’s in talks to play Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The plan is for the character to make his first appearance in The Mummy, before becoming part of a universe that will also include new The Bride of Frankenstein and The Creature From the Black Lagoon movies. Tom Hardy and Javier Bardem were previously in talks for the role, but neither signed on the dotted line.

The Mummy is currently shooting in London, and ‘is set in the modern day with Cruise playing a special forces soldier (or former soldier)’. Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis and Jake Johnson also star.

Jake Johnson & Annabelle Wallis Join Tom Cruise in The Mummy

March 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jake-johnsonA reboot of The Mummy franchise starring Tom Cruise always sounded a little odd, but it look like it’s happening, but the Mission: Impossible A-lister possibly being joined by Jake Johnson and Annabell Wallis, who are both in talks for the film.

Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan are producing the film, and are also in charge of creating a series of Avengers-style interconnected movies, based around the stable of Universal monsters. Sophia Boutella is also onboard to play The Mummy herself. Wallis meanwhile will be the female lead, who is a scientist, but there’s no news on who Johnson will be.

Although Universal is keeping its cards close to its chest, it’s believed this reboot will be set in the modern day. It’s also promised that it will be a horror movie, although mixed with action, adventure and probably a PG-13 certificate. Expect it in cinemas June 2017.

Tom Cruise In Talks To Star In The Mummy Reboot

November 24, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tom-cruiseUniversal has big plans for an interconnected monster movie universe, and in order to help kick it off properly it seems they want a big name in the hope it’ll drawn in the crowds. Variety reports that Tom Cruise is the man the studio wants, and it appears he’s interested as he’s not in talks to take the lead role.

If he does sign on, he’s likely to play a role in the projects development, with Jon Spaihts writing the script and Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan producing. The latter are in charge of building the Avengers-style monster universe, so they’ll need to make sure they get this one right.

Not too much is known about the plot, except it will of course involve the titular Mummy and will be set in the present day.

It’s expected in cinemas in 2017.

Alex Kurtzman To Direct The Mummy Reboot

August 1, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Alex-KurtzmanOver the last few years Alex Kurtzman (along with Roberto Orci) has made a major career producer and writing the likes of Transformers and Star Trek. Now he’s moving towards directing and has already signed up helm Sony’s Amazing Spider-man spin-off, Venom.

Two weeks ago, it was announced that Kurtzman and Chris Morgan would be in charge of creating an interconnected monster movie universe for Universal Pictures. Now THR reports that Kurtzman is in final talks to direct the first part of this universe, a reboot of The Mummy, which he and Morgan will also write.

A reboot of The Mummy franchise was in the works before the idea of an interconnected series of movies was spawned, however it’s believed that the change of plans has completely altered how they will approach the movie, resulting in a completely new script being needed. The earlier idea was apparently that the reboot would be a straightforward horror movie, but now it will be more of an action-adventure with horror elements.

That said, it’s suggested the film will take place is set in present day, with completely different set characters compared to the last three Mummy movies.

It’s likely Kurtzman will make The Mummy before Venom, as the former already has a June 24th, 2016 release date, while Venom is currently undated.
