Alpha Delta Zatan (VoD Review) – It’s homoerotic frat boy murder time

November 12, 2017 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Jeremy Winter, Jake Kidwell, Connor Field, Drake Malone, Jared Fleming
Director: Art Arutyunyan
Running Time: 72 mins
Certificate: NR (US)
Release Date: Out Now

You know the bits at the beginning of a porn scene where they have some plot (the plumber’s here to work on your pipes etc.) or where men get themselves all sexually frustrated by working out? Well, this is kind of like the feature-length version of that, except with no sex at the end.

Set in a frat house at a top university, right from the beginning we know this is a dangerous place as a man is stalked and killed by someone wearing a harlequin costume. When a new pledge comes into the house, he’s at first pleased to have been chosen for this prestigious frat, which is known to produce the future leaders of America. However, he soon starts to realise something strange is going on, as his fellow frat members start disappearing, he has dreams about someone wearing a harlequin mask and a slightly older guy known as ‘Frat Dad Brad’ begins being increasingly demanding. Inside The Chinese Closet (Human Rights Watch Film Festival Review)

March 7, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Andy, Cherry
Director: Sophia Luvara
Running Time: 72 mins
Certificate: NR
Release Date: March 13th 2016 (Human Right Watch Film Festival)

Italian director Sophia Luvara’s documentary sets its sights on the lesbian and gay population of China, and more specifically the pressures on gay people to get married and have children, whether their parents know about their sexuality or not.

Inside The Chinese Closet follows two main people. The first, Andy, is an architect in his early 30s, whose parents are aware he is gay but are pressuring him to marry and have a kid. He is therefore looking for a woman to have a fake marriage with, preferably a lesbian, although he is torn about whether it’s something he really wants to do or not. Similarly, Cherry is a lesbian who’s already had a fake marriage which hasn’t worked out, but is now hoping to make her parents happy by adopting a child. She has never told them she is gay, but feels they are becoming increasingly aware. Again, she isn’t certain whether getting an abandoned newborn is right for her. [Read more…]

Wasp (Raindance/DVD Review)

September 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Hugo Bolton, Elly Condron, Simon Haycock
Director: Philippe Audi-Dor
Running Time: 72 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: September 28th 2015 (UK)

When watching Wasp, I couldn’t help wonder what the film might be like if it was done again, but with different actors and director. That’s because it’s a relatively simple set-up that relies totally on how it’s played and how it’s filmed, and it’s due to this that the movie is perhaps not everything it might have been.

Olivier (Simon Haycock) and James (Hugo Bolton) are a gay couple who’ve left Britain for a romantic getaway in the South Of France. However, their romantic idyll is disrupted by the arrival of Caroline (Elly Condron), an old friend of James’ who’s just split up with her long-term boyfriend.

Initially it looks like the trio will be able to have a good time together, but then complications arise when Elly notices, or at least thinks she notices, Olivier staring at her. She begins to put the moves on Olivier, which he resists. However, she may not be completely off-base, as while Olivier says he is gay, he has previously been with women (but not for a long time), and there does seem to be some sort of attraction. Folsom Forever (US DVD Review)

June 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Cléo Dubois, Jack Fritscher, Lance Holman
Director: Mike Skiff
Running Time: 72 mins
Certificate: NR
Release Date: June 9th 2015 (UK)

San Francisco’s annual Folsom Street Fair is one of those legendary events that is likely to leave very different impressions in different people’s minds (assuming they’ve even heard of it, of course). Some may view it as pit of depravity, full of sexual freaks and weirdos, others think of it as a celebration of diversity that allows the kind of things that are usually hidden to have their day in the sun. There are also those – mainly those who know little about it – who think it’s essentially an open-air orgy, while some view it as something exclusively for Leather Queens.

The documentary Folsom Forever sets out to take a close look at the Fair, covering its history and what it has become now – something that isn’t just tolerated by the City, but which is actively promoted due to the vast amounts of cash it generates. [Read more…]

Daniel Sloss – Live (DVD)

November 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Daniel Sloss
Director: Kevin Bishop
Running Time: 72 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: November 19th 2012

Daniel Sloss makes me feel old, and not just because he’s only 21. It’s due to the fact that I remember thinking the way he did when I was younger – such as the annoyances of younger brothers and dealing with that time when you’re an adult but still finding a new status outside the family home. Over time much of that drifted away so that now watching him is almost an odd sort of nostalgia, as there’s a slight feeling of him tapping into something many of us lose when grown-up life bashes it out of us.
