Woman In A Dressing Gown (DVD)

August 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Yvonne Mitchell, Anthony Quayle, Sylvia Syms, Andrew Ray
Director: J. Lee Thompson
Running Time: 89 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: August 13th 2012

Although not as famous as the likes of The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner and Saturday Night And Sunday Morning, many credit Woman In A Dressing Gown as the place where the British Kitchen Sink Drama began. It was exceedingly unusual on its 1957 release for taking the small, personal crisis of a normal family living in a block of flats as its main subject, setting a precedent for a lot of the gritty, working class life movies of the 1960s.

Yvonne Mitchell plays Amy Preston, a housewife who seems happy (at least on the surface) in her life as mother of Brian (Andrew Ray) and wife of Jim (Anthony Quayle), even if the dinner is rarely on the table on time and the flat is normally a bit of a mess. Jim is less happy though, straining against his less-than-perfect domesticity and a wife he feels has changed since they married. He’s started seeing a young woman from his office, Georgie (Sylvia Syms), who is utterly devoted to him and wishes for him to leave Amy. Although Jim says he doesn’t want to hurt his wife, he eventually decides he must tell Amy he’s stepping out with another woman and wants a divorce. [Read more…]

Tape 407 – The Mesa Reserve Incident (DVD)

May 15, 2012 By Stephen Sclater Leave a Comment

Starring: Abigail Schrader, Samantha Lester, James Lyons, Melanie Lyons
Director: Dale Fabrigar, Everette Wallin
Running Time: 89 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: May 21st, 2012

Think horror, think Lost meets Jurassic Park! On second thoughts scrap that thought, but Tape 407 does involve a plane crash and some sort of dinosaur hell bent on killing the survivor.

After Dark productions have given us some great little horror gems over the last few years, some slightly better than made for TV productions, and some not, unfortunately this release falls into the latter category. [Read more…]

Legend (Blu-ray)

February 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Tom Cruise, Mia Sara, Tim Curry
Director: Ridley Scott
Running Time: 89 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: February 6th, 2012

If movies were judged purely on how pretty they look, Ridley Scott’s 1985 movie Legend would undoubtedly be considered one of the greatest films of all time. As you’d therefore hope, it looks utterly amazing on Blu-ray, to the point where some scenes are truly mesmerising.

The plot and other aspects of the film sadly remain somewhat problematic. However, with the European Theatrical Cut included on the disc beside the more recently rediscovered Director’s Cut version, you do get a hint that Legend could have been something truly special on all counts, but whether due to the script, story or studio interference, it never quite made it. Make The Yuletide Gay (DVD)

November 2, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Keith Jordan, Adamo Ruggiero, Hallee Hirsh, Derek Long, Kelly Keaton
Director: Rob Williams
Running Time: 89 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: November 9th, 2009

Olaf ‘Gunn’ Gunnunderson (Keith Jordan) is an out and proud student at university, but hasn’t told his parents he’s gay. Although he doesn’t have any plans to tell them when he goes back home for Christmas (just in case they react badly), his situation gets more complicated when his boyfriend, Nathan (Adamo Ruggiero), turns up. Nathan doesn’t know Gunn isn’t out at home, and so has to pose as his boyfriend’s roommate, while Gunn’s parents encourage their son to get together with his old school friend, Abby. Nathan gets rather annoyed with this, especially as he can’t see Gunn’s problem with telling his parents the truth, which puts pressure on him to come out. [Read more…]
