What’s The Gay Interest Amongst The Golden Globe Nominations?

December 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lincoln-poster12012 may not be finished yet, but with the Oscars moving earlier in the year, to February 24th, those ceremonies that want to keep ahead of the Academy have had to move their schedules forward.

That’s true of the Golden Globes, which are often seen as the most important awards in the run up to the Oscars. That’s in part because the noms arrive just as Oscar voters are deciding who they should nominate, while the awards are handed out around the time the Academy decides who the actual winners of their big prizes will be.

So while it might seem early, the Golden Globe nominations have now been released. Lincoln leads the way with seven nominations, while Argo and Django both scored five nominations apiece. However perhaps the big surprise is that there’s only three noms for Zero Dark Thirty, which in the past few days has emerged as the one to beat at the Oscars.

There’s not a huge amount of gay interest amongst the nominations, although Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, which includes an LGBT side-story, is up for Best Film (Musical Or Comedy). Jack Black scored a Best Actor nom for his gay turn in Bernie. Nicole Kidman is nominated for The Paperboy, marking the only nod for gay director Lee Daniels’ The Paperboy. Gay writer Tony Kushner is in the Screenplay category for Lincoln

On the TV side, out actor Jim Parsons is nominated as best comedy/musical actor, while Archie Panajbi is included on the list for Best Supporting TV actress for her bisexual character in The Good Wife. There are also noms in the Best TV Series Musical Or Comedy for the very gay friendly Smash and Modern Family, while Eric Stonestreet gets another Modern Family nomination for play the gay Cam.

Meryl Streep scores her billionth (well, her 27th) Golden Globe nomination for Hope Springs (seriously, the woman can sneeze and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association will nominate it).

British actresses have done well, scoring half the nominations in the Best Actress film categories (Drama and Comedy Or Musical) with Helen Mirren, Rachel Weisz, Emily Blunt, Judi Dench and Maggie Smith (who’s also nominated in the TV section for Downton Abbey) all nominated. Technically we could include Naomi Watts too, as she was born in the UK.

Matt Riddlehoover’s New West Hollywood Comedy Is Now Shooting

December 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

matt-riddlehoover-on-set
A few weeks ago we reported that the exceedingly busy Matt Riddlehoover, wasn’t content with having Scenes From A Gay Marriage just release on US DVD and two more movies in various stages of readiness (Return To Babylon has already filmed, while another as-yet-untitled movie is in development), he’d found time to slot another one in.

Now that movie upcoming comedy is currently shooting in and around Los Angeles, and Matt has sent us the pic above from the set to prove it. The untitled film will follow the intertwining stories of various visitors and residents of West Hollywood and the romances, adventures and predicaments they get into.

Scenes from a Gay Marriage’s Jared Allman (pictured) and stage veteran Amy Kelly will appear in dual roles, alongside Riddlehoover, Andrew Callahan (Paranormal Whacktivity), and Luis A. Gudino (pictured). Not release date is currently set.

John Barrowman Admits He’d ‘Love To Make Out’ With Arrow Co-star Stephen Amell

December 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

john-barrowman-arrowJohn Barrowman has been popping up every so often on the new superhero TV series Arrow, as a mysterious man who seems to be plotting nefarious things, and is somehow bound up in a conspiracy that resulted in Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) getting trapped on an island for five years.

However, while Barrowman’s Malcolm Merlyn has seemed to be a bad guy, in a new interview with TV Guide, the gay actor and singer describes his character as a “troubled hero”, who’s actually trying to clean up the city, but his methods clash with those of spoiled heir turned archery-obsessed superhero Queen (aka title character Arrow).

Barrowman was then asked whether Malcom would be getting any ‘sexy time’ with show’s title character. “I don’t think we ever will!” he says. “Although I would love to make out with Stephen Amell, I don’t think these two are gonna bed down. I always ask him if I can play some xylophone on his abs (Laughs).”

The actor was also asked about the fact he ‘doesn’t hold back’ (which we presume is a euphemism for that fact he never hides the fact he’s gay), Barrowman says “I am what I am, and I don’t hide it. If anybody asked me to change, I would tell them to f**k off.”

If you haven’t seen Arrow and wonder whether Barrowman is right to want to kiss Stephen Amell, just look at the pic below (or indeed our hot gallery of the actor) and tell us you wouldn’t snog him too if you had the chance.

Bruce La Bruce Raising Money For Gerontophilia, A Queer ‘Harold & Maude’

December 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

To call Bruce La Bruce an ‘in your face’ filmmaker is a bit of an understatement. Films like The Raspberry Reich, L.A. Zombie and Skin Flick have pushed the boundaries between cinema and porn, often deliberately challenging the audience’s perception of what they’re watching, looking into everything from Neo Nazis to the undead, all with a homoerotic bent.

Now he’s hoping to return with Gerontophilia, which he’s described as ‘Harold and Maude meets One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’. The film has already started shooting in Montreal, but now La Bruce has launched an IndieGoGo campaign to raise $30,000 to get the movie finished. While this one doesn’t sound as explicit as many of La Bruce’s earlier movies (although who knows?), it takes on a subject that will be challenging to many, this time a relationship between an 18-year-old and an octogenarian.

The director says, “While it might not in any conventional sense be considered science fiction, Gerontophilia is at its heart a time travel movie. It takes as its subject a love affair of sorts between an eighty year old man and an eighteen year old boy: two old souls who, had they met each other somewhere else along the space/time continuum, might have become the perfect couple.”

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Lake is an unusual boy: he is a young man with an old soul who discovers he has an odd fixation on the elderly. Realizing that some day, if fate allows, he will be one himself, he is particularly fascinated by old men. He imagines their age to be a beautiful thing and recognizes how these men where once young and vibrant and attractive, as he is now. Although Lake has a girlfriend his own age, named Desiree, he wonders sometimes if his fixation on old men is unnatural and unhealthy – perhaps even sexual.

‘When his mother, who is a nurse, takes on a management job at an old folks home, Lake jumps at her offer of a summer job as an orderly there. Gradually, Lake comes to discover that the old people in the institution are being given psychotropic drugs to keep them in a catatonic state. Lake befriends one old man in particular, Mr. Peabody, who still seems to have some fight left in him. They begin to form a strong bond. Mr. Peabody charms Lake with romantic stories of his youth and confesses his dreams of seeing the ocean one last time. Avoiding the vigilant eye of Nurse Stonehenge, who administers shots and pills to the old folks, Lake starts to wean Mr. Peabody off his medication.

‘Eventually, Lake springs Mr. Peabody from the institution. Together they embark on a road trip telling everyone they meet that the old man is his grandfather and that they’re driving to the ocean. After numerous life- changing escapades, Lake is finally ready to accept his true feelings for Mr. Peabody, but everything changes when the trip takes an unexpected turn.’

If you want to know more or fancy offering some cash to the movie – as always with crowdfunding there are perks available depending on how much money you give – head over to IndieGoGo.

Mexican Teacher Gets Fired For Showing Milk To Students

December 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

One of the big things for the anti-gay brigade is that anything good for the gays will inevitably lead to homosexuality being taught in schools – and they believe that this is intrinsically a bad thing. This battle has now led to a teacher in Mexico being fired, due to the fact she showed her students Gus Van Sant’s movie, Milk.

Cecilia Hernández, a new civics teacher at Lomas Hill School in Cuajimalpa, was addressing sexual orientation and human rights, which is part of the curriculum. As part of this she showed the first half-hour of the 2008 movie to her 7th and 8th graders (those around 13-years-old). She had apparently included the film on her approved lesson plans and not had any objections.

The website even says it was the students who chose the film after being given several options, and that she told the, there may be some scenes that made them uncomfortable. A day after Hernández showed the first part of the film to the kids, two security guards are said to have taken her to the principal’s office and she was told she was fired.

An e-mail from the head of the school,  Annette Muench de Labardini, says, ‘The lack of tact and the disrespect you have shown students today is unforgivable. I consider it disrespect towards myself as well, since your lesson plan did not say you were showing this filth.’

Hernandez has since said she does not want her job back, but has made an official complaint over her treatment.

Milk tells the story of gay rights campaigner Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be voted into public office in the US, who was tragically murdered in 1978. The movie won two Oscars (Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay) and was nominated for six more.

New Pics Of Michael Douglas & Matt Damon In Their Liberace Biopic

December 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Back in August, we got a few set pics from Steven Soderbergh’s biopic of Liberace, Behind The Candelabra, which sees Michael Douglas as the man himself, with Matt Damon playing his younger lover, Scott Thorson. While you wouldn’t expect this starry line-up to be making something for TV, it’s actually an HBO Films production and is due to debut on US television next year (although it may still get a theatrical release in Europe).

Now Bleeding Cool has grabbed some of the first shots from the film, which were included in HBO’s 2012 ‘Yearender’ video (which now seems to have been made private, so we can’t post it here, sadly). They show Michael Douglas looking suitably flamboyantly and pretty much a dead ringer for the real Liberace. And It has to be said Matt Damon’s also looking pretty good with bouffant hair and 70s style, even if he is about 10 years too old to play Thorson, who was in his teens and 20s when he knew Liberace.

The movie follows the relationship between Liberace and the far younger Thorson, which started after they met when latter was just 17, in 1976. Thorson became his companion and is said to have had a five-year relationship with Liberace, which ended due to the entertainer’s alleged promiscuity and Scott’s drug problems.

Although the pianist and showman went to his grave swearing he wasn’t gay, this front was challenged after Liberace and Thorson split up and the younger man sued the entertainer for palimony. They settled out of court and are said to have reconciled their differences shortly before Liberace died of AIDS in 1987.

Warner Drops Gay Elmo Puppeteer Kevin Clash’s Movie Following Sex Scandal

December 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s not been a good couple of months for Kevin Clash, the man who for 28 years worked on Sesame Street and was the puppeteer and voice behind Elmo. He’s been hit with several claims that he’s engaged with underage sex with young men, which resulted in him resigning permanently from the children’s show that’s long been part of his life.

Now he’s had more bad news, as Vulture reports that Warner Bros. has dropped a proposed puppet feature that Clash was developing. The former Sesame Street-er began putting together the project last summer, which would have revolved around a newly created character.

A brief description of the story, as described in a leaked development document, says it would have been, ‘A Calvin and Hobbes kind of movie about a kid and his stuffed animal that takes on a life of its own because of the child’s imagination.’

The unnamed lead puppet character was reportedly inspired by the WB’s Ralph Phillips, who appeared in a series of 1950s Looney Tunes short films.

Kevin Clash could still potentially shop the project to other studios, but with legal action still hanging over his head, and no guarantee others won’t emerge making claims, it’s tough to imagine anyone would want to touch it at the moment.

It should be noted that while several claims of underage sex have been made, nothing has been proved.

Azul Y No Tan Rosa (Blue And Not So Pink) Trailer – Take a look at the Venezuelan gay-themed flick

December 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Azul Y No Tan Rosa was released to acclaim in Venezuela last week (November 30th) and is now rolling out across Latin America. We’ve just come across the trailer for Miguel Ferrari’s film, but unfortunately unless you can speak Spanish you’ll just have to guess what they’re saying as there are no subtitles. However you can still get a great feel for the film, which will hopefully hit English-speaking territories sometime soon.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The story of Diego, a young and successful photographer that lives in the glamorous world of fashion, shallowness and excess. A tragic accident turns his world around; his partner is now in a coma. Unexpectedly, and right at this terrible time, Diego must take care of his son, Armando. Now, both of them have to adapt to each other; Armando to the unknown, homosexual world of his father, and Diego to the closed attitude of his teenage son.’

Chris Evans’ Gay Brother Scott Arrested In LA On Drug Charges

December 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When most people have a ‘ridiculous’ night, it doesn’t involve being arrested by undercover cops on drug charges, but that’s what happened to US soap star Scott Evans, brother of Captain America himself, Chris Evans.

TMZ reports the 29-year-old was caught during a sting operation and arrested for allegedly trying to buy narcotics from an LAPD officer who was posing as a drug dealer. He was  booked on felony charges of attempting to possess a controlled substance and released on bail after more than five hours in custody. It’s not known what type of drug he’s said to have tried to buy.

However Scott seems to be taking it all in his stride, writing on Facebook, ‘Most ridiculous night of my life in LA so far. At least I made it a year before getting arrested.’

Evans is best known in the US for playing gay police Officer Oliver Fish on the US soap opera, One Life to Live. He was on the show from 2008 through early 2010, coming out in 2009. His storyline culminated in a symbolic group gay wedding. He is also openly gay in real life.

Ben Whishaw Takes An Intriguing Gay Role In Lilting

December 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While there’s been a bit of speculation as to Ben Whishaw’s sexuality, he hasn’t had much to say about it. However that hasn’t stopped him playing the full range of possible proclivities, even recently turning Shakespeare’s Richard II rather gay in The Hollow Crown. He’s also, of course, been having huge success recently as the new Q in Skyfall.

Now he’s taken a gay role in the microbudget movie Lilting, from writer/director Hong Khaou (helmer of the excellent British gay shorts Summer and Spring), according to THR. The plot is slightly similar to Xavier Dolan’s upcoming Tom a la ferme, although whereas that film’s French Canadian, this one focussing on a Chinese mother (Cheng Pei Pei) who is grieving for her son (Andre Leung) after his untimely death. While they both lived in the UK, the Chinese born mother used her son as her conduit to living in Britain and is lost without him.

Feeling stranded in her adopted country, the only person she has left is her son’s friend (Ben Whishaw). However while she believes the young Brit was her son’s roommate, he was actually his lover. They come together, trying to overcome their differences – both culturally and through a difficult language barrier.

Peter Bowles and Morven Christie are also set to star in the film. Backing comes from FilmLondon’s ultra-low budget filmmaking fund, Microwave, which previously helped get iLL Manors made.

Khaou comments, “This film is very close to my heart. The support I’ve had through the mentors has been intelligent, insightful and imaginative. There was a genuine, considered care towards helping me anchor my voice and ideas.”
