Paranorman Features Hollywood’s First Out Gay Animated Character

August 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although the world of animation has presented us with many camp and perhaps closeted character over the years (there’s been a lot of speculation over whether Brave’ Merida is actually a lesbian), with little fanfare one movie has actually just given Hollywood it’s first out gay character. The film is Paranorman, which features a jock character who turns out to be gay, and not only that, he has a boyfriend.

The character fits into the film’s message about tolerance and understanding, as it’s about a boy who can talk to the dead, but nobody except his best friend believes him. The movie is directed by a British duo, Chris Butler and Sam Fell. Butler recently spoke to Indiewire, who said about the character, “I wanted it from the start, absolutely. It seemed like the best bookend to that whole tolerance thing and to do it as a joke, a kind of throwaway thing, but something that has NEVER been done before. I think we’re telling a story about intolerance, so you have to be brave about it.”

The stop motion film, which comes from the same studio that produced Coraline, hits UK cinemas on Septermber 14th.

In The Family Trailer – The things a gay dad will do for his family

August 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Thanks to an interview with director Patrick Wang over at The Advocate, we were tipped off to the trailer and some clips for In The Family, which looks like it could be a fascinating and morally complex film about the difficult journey of a gay father. It’s been getting some great reviews at screenings across the US, although there’s no news on when it might be reaching the UK.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In the town of Martin, Tennessee, Chip Hines, a precocious six year old, has only known life with his two dads, Cody and Joey. And a good life it is. When Cody dies suddenly in a car accident, Joey and Chip struggle to find their footing again. Just as they begin to, Cody’s will reveals that he named his sister as Chip’s guardian. The years of Joey’s acceptance into the family unravel as Chip is taken away from him. In his now solitary home life, Joey searches for a solution. The law is not on his side, but friends are. Armed with their comfort and inspired by memories of Cody, Joey finds a path to peace with the family and closer to his son.’

Take a look at the trailer above and we have some clips below.

See Clips From This Year’s Iris Prize LGBT Shorts

August 30, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s just under six weeks until this year’s Iris Prize, the world’s biggest LGBT short film festival, kicks off in Cardiff. Recently we covered the announcement of the 31 films that will be competing this year. Just reading through the list of shorts suggests a fascinatingly eclectic selection, covering everything from a young boy’s waiting for his body hair to grow to a film based on a true story about someone who has a one night stand with a serial killer.

Now the guys behind the festival have put together a montage of clips from the competing films, which gives us an even better taste of what’ll be on offer in Cardiff from October 10th-14th. It really does look like there’ll be a lot of good stuff to see and tough competition for the final award, with the winner getting a prize valued at £25,000, including help and funding to get a new short made.

You can find out more about the Iris Prize on the official website.

Homophobic Bullying Drama Drown Seeks Funding

August 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We feature quite a few crowd-sourcing campaigns on BGPS, as there are a lot of good projects out there, but limited funding. The latest looking to the interwebs for financial help is Drown, an Aussie movie based on an acclaimed play by Stephen Davis. They’ve set up a funding page over at IndieGogo, and to help you decide if you’d like to help, they’ve released a pre-production trailer which you can see above. As usual with these sorts of the things, there are different perks available depending on how much you want to give.

Here’s a bit more about the project, taken from the film’s IndieGogo page: Based on the acclaimed Queensland Theatre Company play, DROWN tells the story of Len, an heroic but homophobic surf lifesaver who finds himself attracted to Phil, a younger, openly gay lifesaver. Unable to cope with sex-attraction within the confines of male sports culture, Len enlists his best mate Meat in a campaign of intimidation and bullying against the newcomer. Phil dethrones Len as the reigning club swimming champion and a night of heavy drinking ensues. A visit to a gay nightclub (to “pick up chicks”) confounds Len’s crisis of identity. Len and Meat force-feed Phil rum and they drive to the beach to sort out once and for all who is the bigger man.

DROWN, inspired by true events, is a bold and confronting film dealing with urgent problems. We aim to tell a suspenseful and gripping story and challenge audiences to consider issues around identity and sexuality. Why is male identity so narrowly defined? Why do we punish those who are different from the majority? Why do so many people turn a blind eye to bullying and intimidation when they know they should take a stand?

Bullying affects everyone either directly or indirectly. Very often, as depicted in Drown, bullying is related to sexuality – 90 per cent of LGBT report being bullied at school in the past year because of their sexuality.

By making, publicising and distributing Drown, we can make bullying a talking point and raise awareness about how young people are affected by issues around sexual identity.

Find out more at IndieGogo or the film’s website.

Andy & Lana Wachowski Join Justice League Shortlist

August 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Warner Bros. is currently hunting for a director to take the helm on their planned Justice League of America movie. Recently it was reported that ben Affleck had been offered the job, but it’s now been confirmed he won’t take the job. he’s told the Canadian press (via THR) that “It sounds really exciting, but it’s not something I’m working on.”.

Now Moviehole has word that Warner is now considering Cloud Atlas directors Andy and Lana Wachowski for the superhero ensemble. The studio is reportedly very excited about Cloud Atlas’ immense scope and its ensemble cast, two things the Justice League of America movie will certainly have.

It isn’t clear if a formal offer has been made to the siblings or if it’s just an idea the studio’s had at the moment. They also have projects such as Cobalt Neutral 9 and Jupiter Ascending in the works, although it isn’t known if either of those will be their next picture (and both may have funding issues, which have already delayed the ‘gay Iraq war story’ Cobalt Neutral 9.

Will Beall (Gangster Squad) is working on the Justice League screenplay, which will likely bring together DC Comics luminaries such as Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and Green Lantern.

Gay Pair Craig Zadan and Neil Meron To Produce The Oscars

August 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Oscars may be getting a little bit more musical this year, as the openly gay duo, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, has signed up to produce the show. They’re no stranger to a little bit of camp, having produced movie musicals like Hairspray and Chicago, the recent remake of Footloose, as well as TV’s Smash. On the Broadway stage they’ve produced the likes of the successful restaging of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

‘We are very excited to collaborate with Hawk [Koch, President of AMPAS] and everyone at the Academy to produce this year’s Oscars,’ Zadan and Meron said in a joint statement. ‘We hope to utilize our experience in producing features, TV and theater to bring something fresh and special to this incredible awards show.

‘When we filmed The Bucket List, we made our own personal bucket list, and producing the Oscars was #1. It’s truly a great honor.’

GLAAD has welcomed the duo’s appointment, with the group’s President Herndon Graddick saying, ‘For decades, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron have been fearless in bringing powerful and entertaining stories to screens, and will undoubtedly bring that same level of passion and skill for storytelling to the Oscars.’

We’ll be able to see what the duo bring us with their Oscar extravaganza on February 24, 2013. They say there are already a few people in mind to host, and they’re also thinking of bringing back musical numbers.

NBC Affiliate Refusing To Air Gay-Themed Sitcom The New Normal

August 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If you live in Salt Lake City, Utah and were looking forward to watching next month’s debut of the new sitcom from Glee creator Ryan Murphy, you’re out of luck, as THR reports that the NBC affiliate KSL-TV is refusing to air the show.

The New Normal revolves around a blended family of a gay couple (Andrew Rannells, Justin Bartha) and the woman (Georgia King) who becomes a surrogate for them as they grow their family. Ellen Barkin co-stars with Nene Leakes on board as recurring characters.

The CEO of KSL’s parent company, Bonneville International, has stated, “After viewing the pilot episode of The New Normal, we have made the decision to keep it off our fall schedule. For our brand, this program simply feels inappropriate on several dimensions, especially during family viewing time.”

The station has blamed crude dialogue, explicit content and offensive characterisations, although Bonneville is said to be largely controlled by the Mormon church, which isn’t a religion known for embracing gay people. It’s not the first time they’ve refused to air a show, as they also opted out of the short-lived The Playboy Club when that was launched last year. They’ve previously nixed the likes of Coupling, The Book of Daniel, and God, the Devil and Bob. The anti-gay group One Million Moms will be happy though, as they’ve already called for an advertiser boycott of the series.

Ellen Barkin isn’t impressed by KSL’s actions though, tweeting ‘Anyone in Utah interested in @NBCTheNewNormal please clog up @ksl5tv feed 4 their blatantly homophic decision 2 not air the show #KSLBigots.’ She added, ‘Shame on u ‪@kslcom‬ not airing ‪@NBCTheNewNormal‬ So L&O SVU (rape & child murder) is ok? But loving gay couple having a baby is inappropriate?’

For those who don’t live in the US who may be wondering why one bit of Utah can refuse to air the series, it’s because the American airwaves consist of hundreds of small station with a limited geographical areas (no company is allowed to own terrestrial stations that cover the whole population). Most of these these stations affiliate themselves with a national network such as NBC of CBS so they can air bigger, more expensive programming. However the affiliates around the country still have control over what they do and don’t show, and in this case the Utah based KSL has pulled The New Normal.

You can watch a trailer and clip for The New Normal here.

Passion Trailer – Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace want to lock lips

August 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

They’re really playing up the lesbian undertones of Passion, although I have a horrible feeling it’s more to appeal to the baser instincts of straight men than because this will actually be a good depiction of women’s desire. Brian De Palma teams up with Noomi Rapace and Rachel McAdams for a thriller about a young businesswoman plots murderous revenge after her boss and mentor steals her idea. The movie is a remake of the French movie, Love Crime. No release date is currently set.

Ellen Page Set To Star In Real-life Lesbian Drama

August 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The documentary short Freeheld, about a landmark LGBT equality case, won an Oscar. Now plans are moving forward to turn it into a feature film, and according to Deadline, it’ll star Ellen Page. A new production company called Incognito Pictures has stepped up to finance the movie, which has a script by Ron Nyswaner (Philadephia), so it seems it really will get made.

Page is attached to play mechanic Stacie Andree, who was denied the pension benefits of her longtime partner and New Jersey police detective Laurel Hester, when the latter became terminally ill. While Hester’s detective partner Dane Wells was conservative and surprised to learn of Hester’s orientation, Wells stepped up to become the leader in the fight for Laurel’s rights to assign her benefits to Andree.

Cynthia Wade, who directed the 2007 short, will serve as one of the feature film’s producers.

James Franco Pays Homage To Cruising With ‘Homo-Sex-Art-Film’

August 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I’m starting to feel my gayness is rather inadequate compared to James Franco’s, and he doesn’t even sleep with men! Last month rumours circulated that Franco was planning to make a ‘Homo-Sex-Art-Film’ with director Travis Mathews. Now more details of that film have emerged, and it turns out it’s a homage to the controversial 1980 Al Pacino movie, Cruising.

William Friedkin’s film sparked controversy even before it was shot, and protesters attempted to disrupt filming on what they saw as a movie that would paint gay people as S&M obsessed perverts one step away from being psychopathic serial murderers. The film is slightly more complex than that (although it’s certainly not a great promo for being gay, and had to have a disclaimer added to the beginning saying it wasn’t suggesting all homosexuals were depraved), with hints that as Pacino’s cop investigates the S&M underworld investigating a serial killer, he gets increasingly drawn into it.

To get a cinema release, Friedkin is said to have had to cut 40 minutes of more graphic footage from Cruising, which apparently depicts just how deep Pacino’s character went into the underbelly of the gay S&M world. Franco’s collaboration with Travis Mathews is an imagined recreation of that lost footage.

Director Travis Mathews

Initially Franco wanted to update Cruising, but he couldn’t secure the remake rights. Instead he sought out a director who had previously filmed real gay sex, to help him make a homage. Mathews, who featured explicit sex scenes in his gay drama I Want Your Love, fitted the bill. After some initial discussions, filming quickly followed and Mathews turned over an initial cut to Franco after just two months. The film, ‘James Franco’s Cruising’, features both James and Mathews and looks at both the lost 40 minutes of Cruising, as well as try to look at how people see Franco as a star figure.

“[James] knew he wanted real gay sex in it,” Mathews tells Indiewire. “His people went looking for a filmmaker who had filmed real gay sex, and I suspect someone who would complement his vision. We talked about why we would be interested in still looking at this film.  We talked about his interest in the film and his interest more broadly in so many gay-themed stories and visionairies. He’s worked with so many in front of and behind the cameras over the years.”
Mathews (left) and Franco both appear in the movie, a fictional re-creation of 40 minutes which was originally ut from the film to appease the MPAA and secure an R rating.

“[Friedkin] cut the film down at his own expense,” Mathews said. “Recently, when he was getting ready to do an anniversary edition, Warner Bros. told him that the footage was destroyed. It’s possible those 40 minutes implicate Pacino’s character in the gay S&M culture. That was the place we started from as a launching point: James Franco’s version of those lost 40 minutes.”

Mathews believes that while Cruising is still vilified by many as a stain on LGBT-themed cinema , it’s time for a bit of a re-evaluation. He says “The interesting thing about that movie is it gets short-circuited a bit too quickly in people’s eyes. If you forget about the whole murder mystery backstory and you just look at the bar scenes, I think it’s quite an insightful, important document of an important subculture, right before AIDS hits, in 1979 New York.”

Franco’s fascination with gay male culture seems pretty profound. He’s played gays in films like Milk and Howl, directed the gay bio-pics The Broken Tower (about poet Hart Crane) and Sal (about actor Sal Mineo), released the queer short The Feast of Stephen, and even appeared in drag for the cover of Candy magazine. Where the interest comes from isn’t clear, but it’s something he doesn’t seem to want to give up on.

Mathews hopes to debut the finished cut of ‘James Franco’s Cruising’ early in 2013. An installation version of the footage will play at a group show in a gallery beginning September 12.
