Gay Filmmaker Wins Best Film At The Indian Oscars

March 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s big debate in India at the moment over homosexuality, with the Supreme Court having to decide whether the legalisation of gay sex a few years ago should have been allowed. It’s still a tough country to be openly gay in, one main who is open about himself is filmmaker Onir, whose movie, I Am, just picked up Best Hindi Feature Film at the National Film Awards, India’s most prestigious film awards ceremony.

It’s a huge stamp of approval for a small, indie movie that deals with gay issues, which was partially funded through Facebook crowdsourcing, with 400 people earning a co-producer credit by giving money to get the film made. Onir went to the web for cash after established studios balked at the idea of funding a film about various controversial topics.

I Am tells four separate stories, one about child abuse, one about gay rights, one about Kashmir and one about sperm donation, all of which are big issues in India today. You can see more in a trailer below.

Onir commented to the Indo-Asian News Service: ‘This award has given me a lot of strength. This was the most difficult film to make as studios were not ready to acquire the film. This is a film made by people and this award is for those people who helped in the film.’

BGPS Is Looking For A Writer/Journalist To Cover London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival

March 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

BigGayPictureShow.com is looking for new writers to join our team, and most urgently we’re looking for a London based gay writer/journalist to cover the London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival, which runs from March 23rd-April 1st. This is a voluntary, unpaid role, but we should be able to help someone get a free press pass for the festival and the opportunity to see a lot of interesting movies.

We’re also looking for writers for all parts of the site, whether it’s reviews, features, interviews or anything else. We’d love to hear your ideas.

Unfortunately at the moment all work done for the Big Gay Picture Show website is unpaid (we wish we could pay, but it’s a website done by us for love more than anything else). If you are interested in adding your voice to the site, please e-mail us with some info telling us why you think you’ve got what it takes and what you’re keen to do (we’re always happy to hear new ideas). You should also attach some examples of your writing if possible (preferably film/DVD reviews). If we believe you’d be a good fit for the site we’ll contact you, explaining how things work and to discuss what we might be able to do together.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Please E-mail your covering letter and writing examples to: [email protected]

Lesbian Werewolf Drama Jack & Diane Set To Premiere At Tribeca

March 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jack & Diane has a fairly long production history, which largely consists of various actresses such as Ellen Page and Olivia Thirlby attaching themselves to the title roles, before moving on. As a result it took a long time to get it in the can, but it was finally filmed last year with Riley Keough (who’s Elvis Presley granddaughter, incidentally) and Juno Temple in the lead roles.

Now the lesbian-themed fantasy drama film is set to gets its premiere, with the announcement (via The Playlist) that it’ll screen at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, which runs April 18th-29th.

The movie is about two teenage girls who meet in New York City and despite being very different, spark up a relationship. When Jack discovers that Diane is leaving the country in a week she tries to push her away. Diane struggles to keep their love alive while hiding the secret that her newly awakened sexual desire is giving her werewolf-like visions.

Jena Malone also stars, with Kyle Minogue popping up in the movie as a tattooed lesbian. Hopefully the movie will reach the UK later this year.

Brad Pitt Joins Clooney & Co. In Star-Studded Prop. 8 Play Reading

March 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It was already set to be one of the most star-studded plays in history, and now it’s got even starrier as Brad Pitt has signed up for this Saturday’s staged reading of Dustin Lance Black’s play, 8.

He joins George Clooney, Kevin Bacon, Jane Lynch, John C. Reilly, Chris Colfer, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Cleve Jones, George Takei,  Yeardley Smith, Christine Lahti, Jamie Lee Curtis, Matthew Morrison, Matt Bomer and others in the one night only event, which hopes to raise millions for the fight for marriage equality.

Black’s play is based on transcripts and interviews with those involved in the court case that sought to overturn Proposition 8, which banned same sex marriage in California. Brad Pitt will star as Judge Vaughn R. Walker, the man who found Prop. 8 unconstitutional.

Until now this incredible starry event looked like it would be limited to the lucky few who managed to snag a ticket to attend the reading at LA’s Wilshire Ebell Theatre. However, it’s now been announced that the whole thing will be livestreamed free on Youtube. The only snag being that as it takes place at 7.45pm LA time, that’s 3.45am in the UK.

Black wrote the play because he believes people need to witness what actually happened in the case, and the Youtube stream is part of that. “People need to witness what happened in the Proposition 8 trial, if for no other reason than to see inequality and discrimination unequivocally rejected in a court of law where truth and facts matter,” said Black. “I’ve built my career around exposing and uncovering ‘the real story.’ The goal of 8 is to show the world that marriage equality is a basic constitutional right and that those who would deny this basic freedom from loving, committed couples have only vitriol and baseless hyperbole to fall back on. The facts are on our side and truth always finds the light. We are doing all we can to help speed that process along.”

You can watch director Rob Reiner’s announcement about the livestream here, and you’ll be able to return there on Saturday night to watch the star-studded production.

George Clooney Says He’ll Never Deny Gay Rumours

March 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

It’s almost a rite of passage in Hollywood that rumours start to circulate that you’re gay. Indeed it’s believed some young stars (or at least their management) foster the rumours in the hope it’ll help their career. Rumours have swirled around George Clooney for years, largely based around the fact that while he’s had a string of beautiful girlfriends, he’s never gotten married.

Ahead of his one night only appearance in a staged reading of Dustin Lance Black’s play 8, (about the attempts to get Prop 8, which banned gay marriage in California, overturned) he’s been talking to The Advocate, and touched on the fact a lot of people want to think he’s gay.

He says, ‘I think it’s funny, but the last thing you’ll ever see me do is jump up and down, saying, “These are lies!” That would be unfair and unkind to my good friends in the gay community. I’m not going to let anyone make it seem like being gay is a bad thing. My private life is private, and I’m very happy in it. Who does it hurt if someone thinks I’m gay? I’ll be long dead and there will still be people who say I was gay. I don’t give a shit.”

He also talks about why he got involved in the fight for marriage equality, saying ‘It’s always been this albatross that stood out to me as the final leg of the civil rights movement. It really came to a head during the 2004 elections, when it was used as a wedge issue, and it was a very effective tool to keep the Republicans in office and to avoid talking about other issues. Well before Prop. 8, I’ve made the point that every time we’ve stood against equality, we’ve been on the wrong side of history. It’s the same kind of argument they made when they didn’t want blacks to serve in the military, or when they didn’t want blacks to marry whites. One day the marriage equality fight will look as archaic as George Wallace standing on the University of Alabama steps keeping James Hood from attending college because he was black. People will be embarrassed to have been on the wrong side. So it’s encouraging to know that this too will seem like such a silly argument to our next generation. There are even a lot of young conservatives today for whom marriage equality isn’t an issue. It always takes government an extra generation to catch up to the people.’

As for his bromance with Brad Pitt, he comments, ‘People think Brad and I hang out all the time, but the truth is that we see each other very rarely, maybe a couple times a year. I’ve had great fun spending time with my friend again over the awards season. Not only do I enjoy him as a person and respect his talent, but I also love what he does in the world. I can’t speak highly enough about how hard he works at making the world better. I’m very proud to call him my friend.

It’s an interesting interview, so take a look.

Josh Hutcherson Helps Promote Gay-Straight Alliances

February 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Josh Hutcherson will be breaking hearts soon in Hunger Games and is currently riding high in the box office charts with Journey 2, but The Kids Are All Right star recently took some time out to help promote gay-straight alliances in US schools. He teamed up with Straight But Not Narrow founder Avan Jogia (and the two seem to have a bit of a bromance going on) and talked to various people involved in gay-straight alliances and got them to reveal the importance of having these groups as a safe space in schools both for straight and gay kids. Take a look.

See Pariah Pick Up The John Cassavetes Award At The Spirit Awards

February 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Every year on the day before the Oscars, the Independent Spirit Awards hands out its gongs to the movies that often get overlooked by the Academy, but which deserve recognition nevertheless. One of this year’s Spirit winners was the acclaimed Lesbian drama Pariah, about an African American teen dealing with growing up gay. Producer Nekisa Cooper and director Dee Rees were on hand to accept the Cassavetes award, which is given to a narrative film with a budget of $500,000 or less in the spirit of legendary indie moviemaker John Cassavetes. In the video above, you can see them accepting the award.

There’s no UK release date set for Pariah yet, but with all the awards and acclaim it can only be a matter of time.

Ryan Murphy Planning Star-Studded Musical One Hit Wonders

February 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ryan Murphy has plenty of experience with musical comedy as the creator of Glee, and now he’s joining forces with Sony Pictures for a musical called One Hit Wonders, which Deadline reports has Gwyneth Paltrow, Reese Witherspoon, Cameron Diaz, Beyoncé Knowles, and Andy Samberg attached to star.

The film is about three singers (Paltrow, Witherspoon, and Diaz), who each had hit singles in the 1990s, although their careers fizzled shortly thereafter. They decide to jump-start their careers once more by combining to form a super group. No character details were given for Beyoncé Knowles and Andy Samberg’s parts, although Samberg will be involved in generating the music for the movie with his Lonely Island cohorts.

Ryan Murphy will direct One Hit Wonders from a script he is co-writing with his Glee collaborators Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan. Murphy wants to start production on One Hit Wonders after he wraps on his next project, The Normal Heart, which is due to shoot this spring.

Terence Davies Adapting Gay Novel Mother Of Sorrows

February 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Terence Davies is certainly speeding up his work rate. There were 11 years between The House Of Mirth and last year’s The Deep Blue Sea, but he’s recently revealed he’s moving forward with a long-cherished project called Sunset Song and now Variety reports he’s set to adapt Richard McCann’s award-winning novel, Mother of Sorrows.

Davies has never really come to terms with his sexuality and still claims to hate being gay. Much of his career as a director can be seen as him dealing with his difficulty growing up gay and it looks like that’s set to continue with Mother Of Sorrows. McCann’s book, which won the John C. Zacharis First Book Award and was nominated for the Stonewall Book Award for gay fiction, tells a series of interconnected stories, recounting the tough and tragic life of two gay brothers, growing up in the 1950s.

‘This is an important story because it touches the humanity in all of us,’ Davies says. ‘I love the delicacy of the book and its gentle odyssey from post-WWII optimism for the American Utopia to a deeper understanding of both maternal and filial love and an acceptance of mortality by surrendering to the light.’

It’s still early days and Davies has often had difficulty finding funding, but he’s hoping to get Mother Of Sorrows made after he finished Sunset Song.
