Natalie Portman & Nicholas Hoult Up For Xavier Dolan’s Death and Life of John F. Donovan

February 10, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Nicholas-Hoult

Back in 2014 Jessica Chastain, Kathy Bates, Susan Sarandon and Kit Harington all signed up to star in the first English-language film from queer Canadian writer/actor/director Xavier Dolan. It’s taken longer to get it going than originally planned (largely because he slotted in the upcoming It’s Only the End of the World beforehand), but Dolan has managed to hang on to his cast, along with previously announced actors such as Michael Gambon, Bella Thorne, Chris Zylka and Emily Hampshire.

However, he’s decided that isn’t an impressive enough ensemble, as Variety reports that Natalie Portman, Nicholas Hoult and Thandie Newton have joined The Death and Life of John F. Donovan. The film is about an American TV star (Harington) with everything working out for him who has a secretive correspondence with an 11 year old in London. When a gossip columnist (Jessica Chastain) makes the whole thing look indecent, his life is turned upside-down.

It’s not clear who the newly announced actors will play, but it is known that Kathy Bates is set to be the actor’s high-powered manager, while Sarandon will play his mother.

Film rights are currently being sold at the Berlin film festival, with plans to shoot later this year.

Universal’s Monster Movies Sign Johnny Depp As The Invisible Man

February 10, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

johnny-depp

While Marvel and DC haven’t generally felt the need to cast massive a-list stars as the leads for their interconnected universe of films (even Robert Downey Jr was on the b-list before Iron Man), it seems Universal thinks they need some real star power for the series of monster movies they’re planning. Tom Cruise is attached to a reboot of The Mummy, and now THR reports Johnny Depp is attached to play The Invisible Man.

Ed Solomon (Men in Black, Now You See Me) is writing the script for the film, with Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan overseeing the creation of the universe, which is also likely to include new takes on Dracula and Frankenstein. Over than that there’s very little info on what they plan to do with HG Wells’ classic story.

It’s previously been suggested The Mummy will be set in the present day, so there’s a good chance The Invisible Man will be brought into the modern era too. Universal’s classic 1933 version starred Claude Rains as a scientist who takes an experimental drug and becomes completely invisible. Presumably the new take will follow the same basic set-up.There’s no word on a director or release date.

Charlize Theron In Talks To Be Fast & Furious 8’s Villain

February 10, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

charlize-theron

Charlize Theron showed off her action credentials last year in the excellent Mad Max: Fury Road, and now she may be heading for another franchise full of revving engines and explosions, as Variety reports that Universal has offered her the role of the villain in Fast & Furious 8. However if she does take the role, there’s little info on who she’d be playing.

We do know it will be a ‘new villain’, which suggests she won’t be connected to the Shaw family, who caused so much trouble in the last two movies in the form of Luke Evans and Jason Statham. Although there’s always a chance they’ve got a sister.

Whatever she’s up to, it will inevitably involve the likes of Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, and Chris “Ludacris” Bridges getting into some souped up vehicles and letting rip. F. Gary Gray is due to direct the movie, which is due out April 2017.

It’s All A Bit Where’s Wally In A Quartet Of Posters For Pixar’s Finding Dory

February 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

finding-dory-poster1-slideSomeone in the Disney/Pixar marketing department has decided to take the title ‘Finding Dory’ very literally, with four new posters invite us to look for the Blue Tang, who’s hidden somewhere in the ocean. However, it’s certainly a good way of showing us that this will be new but still taking us to a familiar Finding Nemo world.

Here’s the short synopsis: ‘Disney•Pixar’s “Finding Dory” reunites everyone’s favorite forgetful blue tang, Dory, with her friends Nemo and Marlin on a search for answers about her past. What can she remember? Who are her parents? And where did she learn to speak Whale?’

The movie will in in cinemas this summer. You can take a look at the teaser trailer by clicking here, and have a gander at the new poster below.

High-Rise Trailer – Tom Hiddleston gets naked in a retro-futuristic apartment building

February 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

high-rise-trailer-slideHigh-Rise got slightly mixed reports at its film festival screenings (although some people absolutely adored it), but there’s no doubt it looks like a really interesting movie – and everyone who’s seen it has praised its ambition and visual style. That style is certainly on show in the new trailer for the movie, which you can watch below.

Some of you will also be pleased to know that the trailer gives us a look at a bit of near nudity from Tom Hiddleston, who seems to have a thing for naked sunbathing in the movie.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘1975. Two miles west of London, Dr. Robert Laing moves into his new apartment seeking soulless anonymity, only to find that the building’s residents have no intention of leaving him alone. Resigned to the complex social dynamics unfolding around him, Laing bites the bullet and becomes neighbourly. As he struggles to establish his position, Laing’s good manners and sanity disintegrate along with the building. The lights go out and the lifts fail but the party goes on. People are the problem. Booze is the currency. Sex is the panacea. Only much later, as he sits on his balcony eating the architect’s dog, does Dr. Robert Laing finally feel at home…..’

Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller, Luke Evans and Elisabeth Moss star, with Ben Wheatley directing this adaptation of JG Ballard’s novel. High-Rise arrives in UK cinemas on 18th March.

Lupita Nyong’o May Team With Selma Director Ava DuVernay For Intelligent Life

February 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lupita-nyongo

It looks like Selma director Ava DuVernay may soon be a very busy woman, as Deadline reports that she’s being courted for both Disney’s A Wrinkle In Time and Colin Trevorrow’s Intelligent Life. And if she takes the latter, she may already have a star, as it’s suggested Lupita Nyong’o is in talks for the movie.

Until recently it looked like Jurassic World’s Trevorrow was going to direct Intelligent Life himself, but now he’s looking to pass the reins and is likely to offer the job to DeVernay very soon. The movie is about a UN worker in a department designed to represent mankind if there was ever contact with aliens, who falls for a mystery woman who turns out to be an alien. Nyong’o would be the alien lady.

A Wrinkle In Time meanwhile is based on Madeleine L’Engle fantasy classic novel, about ‘a young girl whose father, a government scientist, has gone missing after working on a mysterious project called a tesseract, which involves being transported to a fifth dimension with mysterious inhabited planets.’

It’s not known whether DeVernay will have time to make both movies, or whether she’ll have to pick one over the other.

Keira Knightley May Join Will Smith In Collateral Beauty

February 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

keira-knightley

Last June Hugh Jackman signed up to star in Collateral Beauty, with Jason Segel and Rooney Mara soon joining. However, soon Jackman was out and Will Smith was in, and now it appears there’s been another casting shift, as THR reports Keira Knightley is taking on the role it seems was previously filled by Rooney Mara.

The film is about a New York advertising executive (Smith) who experiences a deep personal tragedy. When his colleagues devise an unconventional plan to break him out of his depression, the plan works, but not in a way that anyone imagined. The likes of Helen Mirren, Ed Norton, Michael Pena and Naomie Harris are also attached to star.

THR adds that ‘One of the movie’s conceit concerns actors playing walking embodiments of Love, Time, and Death. Knightley would play Love’.

The movie starts shooting in the next couple of weeks in New York City, with David Frankel directing from a script by Allan Loeb. A December 2016 US release is already set, which suggests they’re already thinking this may be an awards contender.

Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates Trailer – Zac Efron teams up with Adam Devine (and yes, takes his shirt off)

February 8, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mike-and-dave-need-wedding-dates-poster-slide2016 appears to be the year of Zac Efron comedies that don’t look all that good, but which hope to lure people in on the promise that he’s been in gym a lot of working out hard and will show us the results. We’ve already had Dirty Grandpa, and this summer will bring both Bad Neighbours 2 and Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates. The last of those now has a trailer.

And as expected, despite the presence of Efron, Adam Devine and the excellent Aubrey Plaza and Anna Kendrick, it looks a bit naff. But even the poster shows there will be Efron nipples!

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Hard-partying brothers Mike (Adam Devine) and Dave (Zac Efron) place an online ad to find the perfect dates (Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza) for their sister’s Hawaiian wedding. Hoping for a wild getaway, the boys instead find themselves outsmarted and out-partied by the uncontrollable duo.’

The movie will be in cinemas in August.

Jason Bourne First Look – Matt Damon is back kicking ass (and shirtless) as the former spy

February 8, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

jason-bourne-matt-damonIt seems the new Bourne movie is dropping the name convention of ‘The Bourne…’ and will just be called Jason Bourne, but other than that it’s business as usual. As this first look shows (which premiered during the Super Bowl), Matt Damon back in action, with plenty of action and fisticuffs. Indeed, if anything, it wants to show he’s even more badass this time around.

There’s still not too much info on the plot, but do know that it’s set in 2016, 12 years after the 2004 setting of The Bourne Ultimatum. Jason has apparently been off the grid in that time, but comes out of hiding in order to find our more about his past. Although as the First Look suggests, he already has more of his memory back – but that doesn’t mean he knows the full truth. Bourne 5 will be out this summer.

Jason Bourne will be in UK cinemas on July 19th. Watch the First Look teaser below.
