Brad Pitt, Christian Bale & Ryan Gosling Up For The Big Short

January 13, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bale-pitt-goslingIt’s all star cast time, as Variety reports that Brad Pitt, Christian Bale and Ryan Gosling are teaming up for the financial drama, The Big Short. Pitt also has his producer hat on for the movie, which will be his second adaptation of a Michael Lewis non-fiction book, following Moneyball.

Part of the reason for the starry line-up isn’t just down to Pitt’s involvement and Lewis’ reputation, but because it will be one of the first studio movies directly about the financial crash in the 2000s. Many have noticed that despite the global ramifications of the credit crunch and its fallout, Hollywood has generally only dealt with it obliquely. Even those films which appear to deal with it, such as The Wolf Of Wall Street, have tended to look at individuals more than the machine itself.

However Lewis ‘book tells the story of the build-up of the housing and credit bubble during the 2000s that led to the financial crisis of 2007-2010’.

Some have suggested Tinsel Town’s reluctance to handle it directly is due to the fact the studios rely on many of the institutions implicated in the crash for funding and financial ‘expertise’, and so haven’t wanted to be too critical. However Paramount is planning to back The Big Short.

It’s expected more major talent will sign up, as it’s planned as a Traffic-style ensemble tale, with lots of characters all who have a roughly similar sized role. However at the moment it’s not known currently involved actors will play.

Adam McKay, who’s best known for his comedy work with Will Ferrell (such as Anchorman, The Other Guys and Step Brothers), is set to write and direct. It’s not clear when it will shoot.

David Fincher & Ben Affleck Set To Reunite For Strangers On A Train Remake

January 13, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gone-girl-slideDavid Fincher, Ben Affleck and writer Gillian Flynn must have had a great time working together on Gone Girl, as THR reports they’re reuniting for a new movie – a remake of the classic Strangers On A Train.

Hitchcock’s 1951 movie – which was based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel – starred Farley Granger as a pro-tennis player who meets a man on a train and they realise they may  have the perfect way to help one another – each wants another person dead, so if they kill each other’s victims it’ll make it far harder for the police to catch them.

However when the tennis player has second thoughts, he not only has to deal with being the number one suspect in the murder his fellow conspirator did commit, but also the fact the other man is mad and rather dangerous.

It’s suggested the new version will update the story somewhat, but Affleck will play someone loosely based on the tennis player. Flynn will write the script with Fincher down to direct. It’s not clear when it might shoot.

Spy Trailer – Melissa McCarthy turns secret agent for Paul Feig

January 13, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Spy-posterI’ve been keen to take a look at Spy even since it was announced (although back then it was known as Susan Cooper), as initial reports had compared it to Casino Royale, but then it was revealed it was a comedy with Melissa McCarthy set to star.

However the first trailers – there’s a green band and a red band version below – suggest a comedic Casino Royale may not be too far off the mark.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Susan Cooper is an unassuming, deskbound CIA analyst, and the unsung hero behind the Agency’s most dangerous missions. But when her partner falls off the grid and another top agent is compromised, she volunteers to go deep undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer, and prevent a global disaster.’

The great cast also includes Jude Law, Rose Byrne, Jason Statham, Allison Janney, Miranda Hart, 50 Cent and Bobby Cannavale.

The film’s due out May 22nd in the US and June 5th in the UK. Take a look at the trailers below. [Read more…]

DJ Caruso May Helm G.I. Joe 3

January 13, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gi-joe-retaliation-shirtless-cut-scene-slideWhile GI Joe: The Rise Of Cobra was seen as a bit of a failure that many thought would doom he franchise before it started, the slightly belated follow-up, GI Joe: Retaliation, was better received (although to be honest, not massive more successful at the box office).

It was good enough to ensure a third film was put in development and now it may have found a director, as THR reports that Paramount and producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura are in talks with DJ Caruso to helm. Initially Jon M. Chu, who made Retaliation, was set to return, but he ended up stepping away, as did Martin Campbell, who was briefly in talks for the film.

Little is known about the plot or which characters might return, although previous suggestions have said they may be trying to find a way to bring Channing Tatum back, despite what happened in Retaliation. Hopefully we’ll know more soon.

New Avengers: Age Of Ultron Trailer – Thor, Hulk, Iron Man & Co. Up The Action

January 13, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

avengers-age-of-ultron-poster1-slideThe new trailer for Avengers: Age Of Ultron may start out fairly quietly, but by the end of its running time it’s certainly upped the action, with plenty of explosions, fighting and perhaps most excitingly for fans, some hulkbusting.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Marvel Studios presents “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” the epic follow-up to the biggest Super Hero movie of all time. When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to The Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for an epic and unique global adventure.

‘Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” stars Robert Downey Jr., who returns as Iron Man, along with Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk. Together with Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and with the additional support of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill, the team must reassemble to defeat James Spader as Ultron, a terrifying technological villain hell-bent on human extinction. Along the way, they confront two mysterious and powerful newcomers, Wanda Maximoff, played by Elizabeth Olsen, and Pietro Maximoff, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and meet an old friend in a new form when Paul Bettany becomes Vision. Written and directed by Joss Whedon and produced by Kevin Feige, Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963. Get set for an action-packed thrill ride when The Avengers return in Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” on April, 2015.’ [Read more…]

Bradley Cooper May Go On Honeymoon With Harry As His Directorial Debut

January 12, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bradley-cooperIn the last few years Bradley Cooper has had plenty of success in front of the camera, but now he’s looking to turn director and according to Deadline he may have found the right project, Honeymoon With Harry.

If he does take it on, he’s also likely to star, and may also reunite with Silver Linings Playbook co-star Robert De Niro for the movie.

The script has been around for a while and both Cooper & De Niro took part in a table read back in 2010, however it’s only now that Warner Bros. is really trying to push it into production.

He follow is about ‘a formerly self-centered womanizing booze-hound who changed his ways when he met a girl and fell in love. He’s loathed by the girl’s dad, who recognizes himself in the young man. They get engaged anyway. When she dies tragically just before their wedding, the devastated groom heads off on their honeymoon to drown his sorrows and drink himself to death. Who does he meet but his almost father-in-law, who has come to spread his daughter’s ashes on her favorite beach.’

De Niro would play the father.

At the moment it’s just one of several projects Cooper is eyeing as his directorial debut, but currently seems to be the frontrunner.

Matt Bomer & Transparent Win At The Golden Globes

January 12, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

matt-bomerMatt Bomer is certainly having a great week. Just a few days after picking up a People’s Choice award he’s won himself a Golden Globe for his excellent performance as an HIV+ man in The Normal Heart.

That wasn’t the only LGBT interest at the Globes, as Amazon’s original TV series Transparent did well, picking up both Best Television Series – Comedy Or Musical, and Best Actor In A Television Series – Comedy Or Musical for Jeffrey Tambor. Transparent creator Jill Soloway dedicated the show’s award to Leelah Alcorn, a transgender teen who recently took her life, leaving a heartbreaking suicide note online. Tambor meanwhile dedicated his win to the transgender community.

This year’s Oscar race is pretty open, but last night’s Golden Globes have helped point out the frontrunners. The big winners in the Best Film races were Boyhood for Drama and The Grand Budapest Hotel for Comedy Or Musical. Boyhood also took Best Director for Richard Linklater, putting it in good stead for a major showing at this Thursday’s Oscar nominations.

In the film acting races, Eddie Redmayne took best actor in a Drama for The Theory of Everything while Julianne Moore won the Actress award for Still Alice. For Comedy Or Musical Amy Adams won best actress for Big Eyes, with Michael Keaton taking best actor for Birdman. Patricia Arquette won best supporting actress for her role in Boyhood, while J.K. Simmons won Whiplash best supporting actor for.

Despite numerous nominations, The Imitation Game, about gay hero Alan Turing, walked away with nothing, while Pride, which was a surprise nominee in the Best Picture – Musical Or Comedy race, couldn’t continue to surprise with a win. Matt Bomer was the only win for the acclaimed Normal Heart, with Fargo winning the Best TV Movie or Mini-Series award that many thought Heart could walk away with. Orange Is The New Black also failed to pick up a gong, despite scoring three nominations.

New Chappie Trailer – Take a fresh look at Neill Blomkamp’s robot tale

January 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

chappie-posterThe first trailer for Chappie looked like it would be a bit of a charmer, with a little bit of an ET/Short Circuit vibe going on. However this new promo adds in a little bit of a harder edge, with a few echoes of Robocop (barring the violence) and more edge.

Still looks like it could be good though.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Every child comes into the world full of promise, and none more so than Chappie: he is gifted, special, a prodigy. Like any child, Chappie will come under the influence of his surroundings – some good, some bad – and he will rely on his heart and soul to find his way in the world and become his own man. But there’s one thing that makes Chappie different from anyone else: he is a robot. The first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. His life, his story, will change the way the world looks at robots and humans forever.’ Dev Patel, Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver and Sharlto Copley star.’

The film’s due out March 6th. [Read more…]

Melissa McCarthy Circling Ghostbusters Lead

January 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

melissa-mccarthyThe extremely long-gestating Ghostbusters 3 is still ever so slowly creeping closer to the screen, and it appears its now ready to seriously think about casting, as THR reports that Melissa McCarthy is in major contention for the female lead.

That’s not too surprising as director Paul Feig has a long-standing relationship with the actress thanks to the likes of Bridesmaids and The Heat, along with the upcoming Spy. However it’s far from a done deal, as McCarthy has several months more work to complete on the latest season of Mike & Molly, and also plans to shoot her hubby’s movie, Michelle Darnell, this summer.

Sony apparently want to shoot the Ghostbusters movie in June, which is likely to clash with Darnell, but it appears they’re going to try to work something out.

It also seems Emma Stone is a contender for being one of the female-led Ghostbusters team, with Jillian Bell (Workaholics), and Cecily Strong (SNL) also likely to meet Feig.

Expect to hear more soon.

Imitation Game & Pride Lead LGBT Interest Amongst The BAFTA Nominations

January 9, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

imitation-game-poster2-slideThe BAFTA nominations are out, with The Grand Budapest Hotel leading the way (perhaps surprisingly) with 11 nominations. However LGBT interest hasn’t been ignored with The Imitation Game picking up nine nominations, while Pride has three nominations and Lilting picked up a Best British Debut nom.

The Grand Budapest Hotel’s impressive line up of noms include Best Film, Director and Original Screenplay for Wes Anderson, Original Music, Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Costume Design, Make Up & Hair and Sound. Ralph Fiennes is nominated for Leading Actor.

The Imitation Game is nominated in Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Adapted Screenplay, Editing, Production Design, Costume Design and Sound. Benedict Cumberbatch is nominated for Leading Actor and Keira Knightley is nominated for Supporting Actress.

On the Pride front, Imelda Staunton is nominated in Supporting Actress, while the film also receives nominations in Outstanding British Film and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer for Stephen Beresford (Writer) and David Livingstone (Producer).

The nominees for the EE Rising Star Award, announced earlier this week, are Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jack O’Connell, Margot Robbie, Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley. This audience award is voted for by the British public and presented to an actor or actress who has demonstrated exceptional talent and promise.

The EE British Academy Film Awards, hosted by hosted by Stephen Fry, take place on Sunday 8 February at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London.

Take a look at all the noms below. [Read more…]
