Rian Johnson To Direct Star Wars Episodes VII & IX

June 21, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rian-johnsonThere had been an assumption that when JJ Abrams signed up to make Star Wars Episode VI, he would also make part VII and IX too. However it turns out he won’t, as it’s been announced that Looper and Brick director Rian Johnson has been hired to write and helm Star Wars: Episode VIII and Star Wars: Episode IX, according to Deadline.

It’s not clear why Abrams isn’t returning, but there’s speculation that while Disney wants Episodes VII and IX in 2017 and 2019, JJ’s tends to like to take his time putting all the pieces in place, so either he or Lucasfilm could have been worried he’d be unable to hit those deadline.

Johnson will also write the movies, which will be his primary focus for the next several years.

Abrams is currently on set helming Star Wars: Episode VII, with Josh Trank (The Fantastic Four) and Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) recently hired to direct to direct Star Wars spin-off movies, which will be released in the years between new instalments of the central story arc.

The Judge Trailer – Robert Downey Jr. reluctantly defends Robert Duvall

June 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

judge-poster1A few days ago the first image from The Judge arrives, which has now been followed up by a poster and a trailer. It looks like it might be pretty good, with Robert Downey Jr. given plenty of opportunity to show off his unique charm.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures comes “The Judge,” starring Oscar® nominee Robert Downey Jr. (“Tropic Thunder,” the “Sherlock Holmes” films, the “Iron Man” franchise), Oscar® winner Robert Duvall (“Tender Mercies,” “Crazy Heart”) and Oscar® nominee Vera Farmiga (“Up in the Air,” “The Conjuring”). The film is directed by David Dobkin (“Wedding Crashers”).

‘In “The Judge,” Downey stars as big city lawyer Hank Palmer, who returns to his childhood home where his estranged father, the town’s judge (Duvall), is suspected of murder. He sets out to discover the truth and along the way reconnects with the family he walked away from years before.’

The Judge is released in UK cinemas on 24th October 2014. [Read more…]

The Wedding Ringer Trailer – Kevin Hart & Josh gad team up for a comedy

June 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The-Wedding-Ringer-pic1Many feel Kevin Hart should be a bigger movie star than he is. Ride Along certainly helped get Hollywood to focus their attention on him, and now he’s got The Wedding Ringer coming, where he teams up with Josh Gad. The trailer is here, which you can watch below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Jimmy provides best man services for socially challenged guys, who – for whatever reason – have no one close enough to agree to stand by them on the day of their wedding. Doug, a groom-to-be, has found himself in just such a situation, but, to make matters worse, he fabricates the names of not only a best man but nine groomsmen as well. When all else fails, Doug seeks out Jimmy’s services to carry out a charade designed to make Doug look his best, but threatens to destroy everything if it fails.’

The Wedding Ringer is due out early next year. [Read more…]

Ewan McGregor Up For American Pastoral Adaptation

June 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ewan-McgregorFor over a decade now Hollywood has been working on an adaptation of Philip Roth’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel American Pastoral. Various directors have come and gone, but it’s never gotten off the ground. The latest to give it a go is Philip Noyce, who suggests to ComingSoon that the biggest issue with getting the film made has been finding the right actor for the lead role.

However now he thinks he done it, as Ewan McGregor is attached to the film.

Roth is definitely one of the great men of American letters, but despite attempts such as Portnoy’s Complaint and The Human Stain, his books have proven very tough to turn into decent films. The 1997 American Pastoral follows Seymour ‘Swede’ Levov, a legendary high school athlete who grows up to marry a former beauty queen and inherits his father’s business. Swede’s seemingly perfect life shatters when his daughter rebels by becoming a revolutionary and commits a savage act of political terrorism during the Vietnam War.

It’s a great book, although Roth’s great strength is in painting the internal lives of his characters, something that can be tough to get across on screen.

Sinister’s Scott Derrickson Is Going To The Outer Limits

June 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Scott Derrickson is massively in demand all of a sudden. Just a couple of weeks after he landed the gig directing  Marvel’s Doctor Strange, it’s been revealed that he’s writing a big-screen adaptation of the classic sci-fi series The Outer Limits alongside his Sinister partner C. Robert Cargill.

THR broke the news, with Derrickson himself confirming it with the Tweet, ‘My screenwriting future has LIMITS’ and the pic below.

scott-derrickson-outer-limits

The original Outer Limits TV series ran from 1963 to 1965, with each episode opening with the cryptic message, “There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission….” Each instalment had a a different, Twilight Zone-ish, story.

Anthologies haven’t tended to work well on the big screen, but rather than trying to mimic the fact each episode of the show was completely different, the movie will be based on the ‘Demon With a Glass Hand’ episode, written by sci-fi legend Harlan Ellison. It starred Robert Culp as a man who wakes up with no memory of the previous 10 days. However he has a computerized left hand that helps him escape from an alien race who believe he is the key to survival.

Community’s Alison Brie Will Find Out How to Be Single

June 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

alison-brieNow that Community has come to an end after years of will it-won’t it get cancelled, Alison Brie has time for other projects. Now she’s in talks to star in the comedy How To Be Single for New Line, according to Variety.

The film is based on a book by Liz Tuccillo novel, which ‘centers on a woman living in New York and searching for love.’

Marc Silverstein and Abby Kohn wrote the script, with Dana Fox working on the latest draft.

Working on both Community and Mad Men, Brie hasn’t had too much time for film, although she did recently voice a character in The Lego Movie. Perhaps this will be her first step into movie stardom.

Final Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes Trailer Arrives & It’s Looking Pretty Epic

June 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dawn_of_the_planet_of_the_apes_poster-slideCaesar and his simian chums have certainly moved on since Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, but their relationship with the few humans that survives a devastating plague isn’t that great.

Indeed it’s pretty much all out war.

Now the final trailer is here and it’s looking pretty epic.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.’

The film hits cinemas next month. [Read more…]

Jamie Dornan Is Looking Fine In The First Official Fifty Shades Of Grey Pic

June 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

fifty-shades-pic1Although we’ve had some staged shots of Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson for Fifty Shades Of Grey, to celebrate Christian Grey’s birthday the first official in-movie pic from the film version has been released, which you can see above.

However while you might hope it would tease some of the film’s kinkier aspects, it’s a pretty safe shot.

The movie follows 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey (Dornan) and his S&M filled affair with young college student Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson). Jennifer Ehle, Victor Rasuk, Eloise Mumford and Max Martini also star. Sam Taylor-Johnson is directing from a script by Kelly Marcel, Patrick Marber and Mark Bomback.

It’s due out February 13th 2015.

Colin Trevorrow Teases Jurassic World Dinosaur With A New Pic

June 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jurassic-world-dino-teaseDirector Colin Trevorrow may have been forced to reveal more about the Jurassic World plot than he’d wanted to, but he still wants to keep teasing us, including with the image he tweeted above.

Last wee we got three pictures from the film, but they were all of the human cast, so this is the first (kind of) look at the actual creatures.

He didn’t say which dino this is. It could be a T-rex, but there’s also the possibility it’s a promised new dino, which is a mix of DNA from different creatures. Hopefully we’ll get a full look summer.

The film is due out summer 2015.
