Frank Trailer – Michael Fassbender hides inside a giant papier mache head

March 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I bet not that many people thought they’d see Michael Fassbender in a film where he spends most of his time wearing a giant papier mache head, but that’s exactly what he does in Frank. The film see Fassbender as Chris Sievey’s creation, Frank Sidebottom.

Sidebottom is a strange figure, who isn’t that well known to the old or the young, but to a certain generation of Brits (and Irishmen, as Fassbender) who were young in the mid-80s through the early 90s, he something of an unexpected icon. With his unique voice, giant spherical head, musical stylings and endless idiosyncracies he became beloved by many. And now he’s got a movie.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Acclaimed Irish director Lenny Abrahamson follows up his award-winning films Adam & Paul, Garage and What Richard Did with an offbeat comedy about a young wannabe musician, Jon (Domhnall Gleeson), who finds himself out of his depth when he joins an avant-garde pop band led by the mysterious and enigmatic Frank (Michael Fassbender), a musical genius who hides himself inside a large fake head, and his terrifying bandmate Clara (Maggie Gyllenhaal).

‘Written by Jon Ronson (The Men Who Stare At Goats) and Peter Straughan (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Men Who Stare At Goats), FRANK is based on the memoir by Jon Ronson. It is a fictional story loosely inspired by Frank Sidebottom, the persona of cult musician and comedy legend Chris Sievey, as well as other outsider musicians like Daniel Johnston and Captain Beefheart.’

Frank is out in the UK in May.

First Look At Dane DeHaan As James Dean & Robert Pattinson As Dennis Stock In Life

March 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

life-dane-dehaan1
When Dane DeHaan was cast as James Dean in Life, it seemed like a good fit, as the actor has more than a whiff of the 50s icon about him. Now we get our first look at him in the role, via EW, opposite Robert Pattinson as Life magazine photographer Dennis Stock.

The first pics features Dean and Stock traveling from the train station to Dean’s childhood home in Indiana.

The movie is a biopic about Dean and the friendship he formed with Life magazine photographer Dennis Stock (Pattinson). Stock was an up-and-coming photographer who took a gig in the early 1950s with the Magnum agency to shoot an emerging actor called James Dean.

The two men soon connected, with their friendship being charted through the iconic photos taken over the course of their friendship, which included a road trip from Los Angeles to New York and Indiana. This trip occurred just before Dean became a star. A few months later, he died in a fatal car accident.

It’s not known if the film will suggest Dean was bisexual (as many believe he was).

Anton Corbijn is directing the movie from a script by Luke Davies. The director comments ‘Rob has an intensity that I think Dennis would have. When I see Rob, I see an inner turmoil that is great for the role. And Dane is really interesting. He has a beautiful face, but it’s a hard face to grasp. It’s hard to see how Dane reads sometimes, and the same thing goes for James Dean.’

It’s currently unclear when we’ll get to see the movie.

Johnny Depp Gets Pixelated In A New Transcendence Poster

March 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

transcendence-poster2
Sometimes Johnny Depp doesn’t seem quite like a normal human, and that’s certainly going to be true in Transcendence, where he puts his mind inside a computer. Now a new poster has arrived in which he gets a little pixelated.

Here the synopsis: ‘Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him. However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed—to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can…but if they should. Their worst fears are realized as Will’s thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown. The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him.’

Transcendence co-stars Morgan Freeman, Cillian Murphy and Kate Mara. The film is due out in April.

Jude Law Joins Melissa McCarthy & Jason Statham In Susan Cooper

March 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jude-lawFor a while Melissa McCarthy has been attached to the spy comedy Susan Cooper, which will reunite her with Bridemaids and The Heat director Paul Feig. More recently Jason Statham signed up to star. Now they have some company as Variety reports that Jude Law is set to join the film.

Not too much info has been released about the movie, other than that it’s about an unlikely female secret agent, played by McCarthy. Statham is a spy on the same side as the title character. There’s not a huge amount more info than that, although it’s previously been said that the film was inspired by the grittiness of Casino Royale, even if it gives a more comedic spin to things.

There’s no news on who Jude Law will play.

Paul Feig is directing from his own original screenplay. Shooting it expected to start this spring, once McCarthy has completed the latest season of Mike & Molly.

The Jolie-Pitt family is on the brink of becoming an acting dynasty as their young daughter, Vivienne – who’s all of three-years-old – is due to make her acting debut as the toddler Princess Aurora in Maleficent. Now thanks to EW we have a look at mother and daughter in the movie – and we hope it didn’t bother the youngster that her mom plays a villain who’s vowed to destroy her.

You can see that pic above, along with a few more new images below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Disney comes “Maleficent”—the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.’

It’s due in cinemas this May.

Daniel Espinosa Will Lay Blood On Snow For Leonardo DiCaprio

March 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

daniel-espinosaBack in October, Leonardo DiCaprio signed up to develop an adaptation of Jo Nesbo’s novel, Snow On Blood, which he was eyeing to star in. He’s still interesting in appearing in the movie and now he’s lined up a director, as Deadline reports that Safe House and the upcoming Child 44’s Daniel Espinosa is in talks to star.

The book is about a hitman who is tasked with killing his boss’ wife. However an unexpected problem arises when he begins to fall in love with his mark. The novel is set to be published this spring, with a sequel, Blood On The Snow 2: More Blood, already planned for in 2015.

To make things a little more interesting, Nesbø wrote both books under the pseudonym Tom Buchanan, who is set to become the victim in his 2016 book, The Kidnapping.

Leonardo DiCaprio is producing alongside his Appian Way Productions partner Jennifer Davisson Killoran, as well as Langley Park’s Jennifer Davisson Killoran. It’s not known when it might shoot.

J.A. Bayona To Helm A Monster Calls Before World War Z 2

March 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Juan-Antonio-BayonaA couple of months ago Juan-Antonio Bayona (The Impossible) signed up to helm the planned sequel to World War Z. However it appears that won’t be for a while as Examiner.com reports that he is first going to helm A Monster Calls, which will shoot this autumn for release in 2016.

The movie will be based on the award-winning children’s fantasy novel by Patrick Ness (the Chaos Walking trilogy). It’s described as ‘a visually spectacular drama about a young boy who attempts to deal with his mother’s illness and the bullying of his classmates by escaping into a fantastical world of monsters and fairy tales that deal with courage, loss and faith.’

Bayona comments, “It is an incredible privilege to bring Patrick Ness’ exceptional book to the screen and I couldn’t have imagined better partners joining me in this endeavor. After The Orphanage and The Impossible, A Monster Calls is the perfect final chapter in a trilogy centered on the extraordinary strength of the mother-child bond.”

March 5, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Karen Gillan’s first filmic step after Doctor Who, Not Another Happy Movie, might not have been great, but these year’s she’s got Guardians Of The Galaxy and the horror movie Oculus coming out, which are both a little more intriguing. Now a trailer for the latter has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Ten years ago, tragedy struck the Russell family, leaving the lives of teenage siblings Tim and Kaylie forever changed when Tim was convicted of the brutal murder of their parents. Now in his 20s, Tim (Brenton Thwaties) is newly released from protective custody and only wants to move on with his life; but Kaylie (Karen Gillan), still haunted by that fateful night, is convinced her parents’ deaths were caused by something else altogether: a malevolent supernatural force—unleashed through the Lasser Glass, an antique mirror in their childhood home. March 5, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Laika has had success with the likes of Coraline and Paranorman and they return this year with The Boxtrolls, which looks like it could be a lot of fun – and as the very first trailer suggested, it’s a movies for all families, no matter the gender make-up of the parents and kids. When the town’s villain, Archibald Snatcher (Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley), comes up with a plot to get rid of the Boxtrolls, Eggs decides to venture above ground, “into the light,” where he meets and teams up with fabulously feisty Winnifred (Elle Fanning). Will Steven Spielberg Remake West Side Story?

March 5, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

west-side-story-600px
Steven Spielberg has made all sorts of movies, but he’s never made a full-on musical. He’s flirted with a few and included musical numbers in several of his films, but he’s never actually gone all the way with it. That may change though as Deadline reports that he’s interested in remaking West Side Story.

It’s very early days though, as all that’s happened so far is that Spielberg has expressed his interest and Fox, which owns the rights, has given him the okay to explore the idea.

If you’re going to make a musical, West Side Story is one of the best, but the 1961 movie version is an outright classic that won 10 Oscars and is remembered as one of the most impressive fusions of film, music and dance ever created. Even if you’re Steven Spielberg, that’s quite something to live up to.

The bearded one may have a particular idea of what he can bring to this retelling of Romeo & Juliet, which is set in New York and follows the romance between Maria and Tony, who are trapped between warring gangs. Leonard Bernstein wrote the music, Stephen Sondheim handled the lyrics and Arthur Laurents came up with the book.

It will probably never happen, but I’m kind of intrigued as to what Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story would look like.
