First Look At Christian Bale As Moses In Exodus Arrives

December 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

exodus-pic1
We don’t get that many biblical epics these days, but that’s changing as we’re soon to get Darren Aronofsky’s Noah, and Ridley Scott is bringing us the Moses movie Exodus. Now the first image from the latter has arrived via Empire, which you can see above.

The story follows Moses (Christian Bale) who goes up against the Pharaoh Ramses (Joel Edgerton) so that he can lead the Israelites out of Egypt and into the Promised Land. As Moses grew up in the royal Egyptian court, he had a close relationship to Egyptian ruler Ramses, which goes sour when he takes up the cause of his people.

Sigourney Weaver, John Turturro and Aaron Paul also star. The movie is due out December 2014.

The Hobbit Tops The Post-Christmas US Box Office

December 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hobbit-desolation-poster3It was a busy weekend for new releases at the US box office, but in the end none of them could beat out The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug, which topped the charts again with $29.8 million. Perhaps more impressive though was Frozen in second place. It’s $28.8 million is the second highest ever (behind Avatar) for a movie in its sixth week of release, and pushes the movie up to be Disney’s second highest grossing animated movie in the US, with only The Lion King beating it.

Of the five big new releases, The Wolf Of Wall Street did best with $18.5 million over the weekend and $34 million since it’s Christmas Day release. Although it only placed fifth on the chart, it’s still considered a good start for an R rated movie that runs nearly three hours.

Ben Stiller’s The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty grossed $13 million over the weekend and $23 million since Christmas. While about in line with expectations, it’s not great for a pretty expensive movie, especially one that had high Oscar hopes earlier this year.

The big disaster though was 47 Ronin, which cost $175 million to make, but only placed ninth with $9 million over the weekend and $20 million since Christmas. Once marketing costs are taken into account, some believe Universal will lose the entire $175 million it spent making the Keanu Reeves movie.

Outside the top 10, the Robert De Niro & Sylvester Stallone boxing movie had a passable $7.4 million opening, which isn’t bad at a packed box office, especially as it wasn’t a particularly expensive movie. Justin Bieber however had less to cheer about, as while his last concert movie, Never Say Never, opened to nearly $30 million, his new one, Believe, grossed just $4 million since it opened on Christmas Day. It certainly seems the Beliebers stayed home for this one, which shows just how fickle the concert movie business can be.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of December 27th-29th 2013.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug $29.8 $190.3
2 Frozen $28.8 $248.3
3 Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues $20.1 $83.6
4 American Hustle $19.5 $60.0
5 The Wolf Of Wall Street $18.5 $34.3
6 Saving Mr. Banks $14.0 $37.8
7 The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty $13.0 $25.5
8 The Hunger Games: Catching Fire $10.2 $391.1
9 47 Ronin $9.8 $20.5
10 Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas $7.4 $43.7

Million Dollar Arm Trailer – Jon Hamm heads for India to attract baseball talent

December 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jon Hamm is leaving the world of 60s advertising and heading into the world of sports for Disney’s Million Dollar Arm. Now we can get a look at the upcoming movie with a trailer.

Here’s the official synopsis: ‘Based on a true story, the film follows JB Bernstein (Hamm), a once-successful sports agent who now finds himself edged out by bigger, slicker competitors. He and his partner Aash (Mandvi) will have to close their business down for good if JB doesn’t come up with something fast. Late one night, while watching cricket being played in India on TV, JB comes up with an idea so radical it just might work. Why not go to there and find the next baseball pitching sensation? Setting off for Mumbai with nothing but a gifted but cantankerous scout (Arkin) in tow, JB stages a televised, nationwide competition called “Million Dollar Arm” where 40,000 hopefuls compete before two 18-year-old finalists, Rinku and Dinesh (Sharma, Mittal), emerge as winners. JB brings them back to the United States to train with legendary pitching coach Tom House (Paxton). The goal: get the boys signed to a major league team.’

The movie is currently due out in May 2014. [Read more…]

Draft Day Trailer – Plus a poster for the Kevin Costner sports movie

December 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

During his 80s and 90s heyday, you couldn’t keep Kevin Costner away from films about sports, such as Bull Durham, Tin Cup and For The Love Of The Game. We haven’t had one for a few years but now he’s back in the sports arena with Draft Day, which has released a poster and a trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘On the day of the NFL Draft, general manager Sonny Weaver (Costner) has the opportunity to save football in Cleveland when he trades for the number one pick. He must quickly decide what he’s willing to sacrifice in pursuit of perfection as the lines between his personal and professional life become blurred on a life-changing day for a few hundred young men with dreams of playing in the NFL.’

Ivan Reitman directs the film, which is due out in April. [Read more…]

Fleming Trailer – Dominic Cooper takes on the creator of James Bond

December 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Over the years there’s been much talk about making a movie about James Bond creator Ian Fleming, who had a rather interesting life beyond writing about 007, however it’s TV that’s come through, with BBC America and Sky Atlantic making the mini-series Fleming, which stars Dominic Cooper in the title role.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Starring DOMINIC COOPER (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Devil’s Double) with LARA PULVER (True Blood, Sherlock), ANNABELLE WALLIS (Hello Carter, The Tudors), LESLEY MANVILLE (Maleficent, Another Year), ANNA CHANCELLOR (The Hour, How I Live Now) and SAMUEL WEST (Mr Selfridge, Hyde Park on Hudson). FLEMING: THE MAN WHO WOULD BE BOND takes a no holds barred look at Ian Fleming, the man behind the James Bond legend whose real life was as exciting, eventful and sexually charged as his famous creation.’

His father was in the government and during WWII he worked for Naval Intelligence, helping with secret plan to misinform the enemy as well as to steal their secrets, as well as setting up a special Commando Unit specialising in subterfuge. It’s certainly a story worth telling, and it’ll be interesting to see what the BBC & Sky has done with it. [Read more…]

First Official Pic Of Benedict Cumberbatch As Gay Codebreaker Alan Turing In The Imitation Game Arrives

December 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

imitation-game-pic1
A couple of days ago the Queen official pardoned codebreaker Alan Turing for the ‘crime’ of being gay at a time when it was illegal, which led to a criminal record and chemical castration, and many believe also resulted in his committing suicide. It’s a good time then for the emergence of the first official picture of Benedict Cumberbatch as Turing in the biopic The Imitation Game – indeed the pardon is the reason the film’s Twitter account tweeted the pic.

Turing is a pioneer of modern-day computing who is credited with helping crack the fiendish German codes, such as Enigma, during the Second World War. The film will chronicle the nail-biting race against time by Turing and his brilliant team at Britain’s top-secret code-breaking centre, Bletchley Park. Turing, whose contributions and genius significantly shortened the war, saving thousands of lives, was the eventual victim of an unenlightened British Establishment.

Tragically in the 1950s Turing admitted to the police he was gay while reporting a robbery, believing they would protect him and catch those who’d stolen from him. Instead it was him who found himself in court. After he was convicted he was shunned by the establishment and despite his incredible mind he found himself pushed to the sideline. He committed suicide (although some say it was an accident) not too long afterwards.

Cumberbatch stars alongside Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Mark Strong, Rory Kinnear, Charles Dance, Allen Leech and Matthew Beard. The Imitation Game will be out sometime in 2014.

Ben Affleck Isn’t Happy In The First Pic From David Fincher’s Gone Girl

December 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gone-girl-pic1
A new David Fincher movie is always something to keep an eye on, and now we get our first glimpse at his upcoming Gone Girl, as tweeted by 20th Century Fox, with Ben Affleck standing in front of a poster of Rosamund Pike. It’s not the most revealing image, unless you’ve read Gillian Flynn’s novel, which the movie is based on.

Affleck plays a husband whose wife (Pike) goes missing on their fifth wedding anniversary. Inevitably the hubby becomes the primary suspect in her mysterious disappearance, with the signs of a struggle making many assume he has killed her, especially when reasons emerge as to why he might have wanted her out of they. However, as we learn more about the couple’s relationship, things become much more complex than they first appear.

The film is due out autumn 2014.

New Pompeii Poster Sees Kit Harington Having A Romantic Eruption

December 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pompeii-poster1
If I were standing next to a volcano that was spew lava bomb, magma and pyroclastic flows, I don’t think I’d bother to take the time to have a kiss, but it seems Kit Harington and Emily Browning think differently in this new poster for Paul W.S. Anderson’s Pompeii.

The movie is set days before the historic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. It centres on former slave Milo (Harington), who must race to save his true love Flavia (Emily Browning). Jessica Lucas is playing a slave who is a confidante to Flavia. Jared Harris, Kiefer Sutherland, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje also star.

Janet Scott Batchler and Lee Batchler wrote the original screenplay, which was revised by Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes. Paul W.S. Anderson’s movie is out in February. It’s certainly looking pretty epic, although is this poster is anything to go by, it’ll also be a little over the top.

We’re the Millers Director Rawson Marshall Thurber Up For Central Intelligence

December 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rawson-marshall-thurberThe comedy Central Intelligence has been doing the round in Hollywood for several years, but now it’s being given some new impetus as THR reports that Rawson Marshall Thurber (Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, We’re the Millers, Easy A) is set to direct.

Ed Helms has been attached to star for a couple of years, but put the breaks on the project when The Hangover became a hit. With his schedule full of sequels to that movie and The Office, Central Intelligence went on the backburner, however with both of those now completed, he has time for the film. The movie is about a dim accountant who is thrown into a world of international espionage after reconnecting with an old friend on Facebook.

Ike Barinholtz and Dave Stassen wrote the original script, but now Thurber will given it a final polish before it shoot sometime next year.

And is it just me, or is Thurber quite the hottie?

Paul Walker Will Appear In Fast & Furious 7, As A New Release Date Is Set

December 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

fast-and-furious-6-pic1After the tragic death of Paul Walker, it was quickly announced that Fast & Furious 7 would be delayed, although there were conflicting reports over whether the film would restart from scratch and remove Walker’s character, or if they would find some way to incorporate him, even though he hadn’t completed his scenes.

Now THR reports that Walker will indeed be in the movie, although there are no specific details on how this will be achieved.

Vin Diesel has also confirmed a new release date, saying that rather than a July 2014 release, it will be coming out April 10th, 2015, giving the movie time for rewrites and for the final scenes to be completed.

Diesel wrote on Facebook: “The last scene we filmed together…There was a unique sense of completion, of pride we shared… in the film we were now completing… the magic captured… and, in just how far we’ve come… Fast and Furious 7 will be released… April 10th 2015! P.s. He’d want you to know first…”
