First Look At Lily James As Disney’s Live-Action Cinderella

September 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

cinderella-preview-pic1
Disney has announced that their new live action Cinderella has started shooting, and they’ve also taken the opportunity to give us our first look at the movie, with Downton Abbey’s Lily James in the title role, looking suitably fairy-tale as she gallops along on a grey horse.

Here’s the press release that announced the start of filming: Walt Disney Pictures announced today that principal photography has begun at Pinewood Studios in London, on “Cinderella,” Disney’s first-ever live action feature inspired by the classic fairy tale.

Directed by Academy Award®-nominee Kenneth Branagh (“Jack Ryan,” “Thor”), the film stars Lily James (“Downton Abbey,” “Wrath of the Titans”) in the title role, Richard Madden (“Game of Thrones,” “Birdsong”) as the Prince, Oscar®-winner Cate Blanchett (“The Aviator”) as the infamous stepmother Lady Tremaine, and Academy Award-nominee Helena Bonham Carter (“The King’s Speech,” “Alice in Wonderland”) as the Fairy Godmother. Holliday Grainger (“Great Expectations,” “Anna Karenina”) and Sophie McShera (“Downton Abbey,” “Waterloo Road”) play Ella’s stepsisters Anastasia and Drisella, respectively. Stellan Skarsgård (“The Avengers,” “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”) and Nonso Anozie (“Game of Thrones,” “The Grey”) play the Arch Grand Duke and the Prince’s loyal friend, the Captain. Tony® Award-winner Derek Jacobi portrays the King.

“Cinderella” is produced by Simon Kinberg (“X-Men: First Class,” “Elysium”), Allison Shearmur (“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”), David Barron (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” “Jack Ryan”), from a screenplay by Chris Weitz (“About a Boy,” “The Golden Compass”).

The filmmaking team includes three-time Academy Award-winning production designer Dante Ferretti (“The Aviator,” “Hugo,” “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street”), three-time Oscar-winning costume designer Sandy Powell (“The Aviator,” “The Young Victoria,” “Shakespeare in Love”), director of photography Haris Zambarloukos (“Sleuth,” “Thor”) and Academy Award-winning editor Martin Walsh (“Chicago,” “Clash of the Titans”).

The timeless story of “Cinderella” dates back to 1697 when first created by Charles Perrault, although it truly came to life for millions all over the world in 1950 with Walt Disney’s celebrated animated feature.

Director Kenneth Branagh says: “It is impossible to think of Cinderella without thinking of Disney and the timeless images we’ve all grown up watching. And those classic moments are irresistible to a filmmaker. With Lily James we have found our perfect Cinderella. She combines knockout beauty with intelligence, wit, fun and physical grace. Her Prince is being played by Richard Madden, a young actor with incredible power and charisma. He is funny, smart and sexy and a great match for Cinderella.”

The story of “Cinderella” follows the fortunes of young Ella whose merchant father remarries following the tragic death of her mother. Keen to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new stepmother Lady Tremaine and her daughters Anastasia and Drisella into the family home. But, when Ella’s father suddenly and unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Finally relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella, Ella could easily begin to lose hope. Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella is determined to honor her mother’s dying words and to “have courage and be kind.” She will not give in to despair nor despise those who abuse her. And then there is the dashing stranger she meets in the woods. Unaware that he is really a prince, not merely an employee at the Palace, Ella finally feels she has met a kindred soul. It appears as if her fortunes may be about to change when the Palace sends out an open invitation for all maidens to attend a ball, raising Ella’s hopes of once again encountering the charming “Kit.” Alas, her stepmother forbids her to attend and callously rips apart her dress. But, as in all good fairy tales, help is at hand as a kindly beggar woman steps forward and, armed with a pumpkin and a few mice, changes Cinderella’s life forever.

Production on “Cinderella” will take place at Pinewood Studios and locations throughout England.

“Cinderella” will be released through Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures in 2015.

About Last Night Trailer – Kevin Hart and Regina Hall star in the remake

September 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

David Mamet’s play, Sexual Perversity In Chicago, got a loose adaptation as About Last Night – starring Rob Lowe and Demi Moore – in 1986. Now it’s coming back with a largely African American cast, although it’s been suggested that this About Last Night will be closer to Mamet’s original.

Leslye Headland’s script follows two couples, one of whom seem perfectly suited for one another, but things go horribly wrong when they move in together. The other two are the squabbling best friends of the other couple who form their own bond. Michael Ealy, Joy Bryant, Kevin Hart, Regina Hall and Adam Rodriguez star.

Now a new trailer has arrived, ahead on the film’s planned February 2014 release. [Read more…]

September 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

oldboy-poster2After years in development and a lot of people saying Hollywood shouldn’t have even thought of remaking Park Chan-Wook’s Oldboy, Spike Lee’s new take on the 2003 film is due for release in just a couple of months time. Now a new poster has arrived, showing a rather haggard looking Josh Brolin and his hammer!

Here’s the synopsis: ‘OLDBOY is a provocative, visceral thriller that follows the story of an advertising executive (Josh Brolin) who is abruptly kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment. Co-starring Elizabeth Olsen and Sharlto Copley, OLDBOY was directed by Spike Lee, from a script by Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend, The Cell, Thor). The film was produced by Roy Lee, Doug Davison and Nathan Kahane.’

Cate Blanchett To Make Feature Directing Debut With The Dinner

September 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Cate-BlanchettCate Blanchett has directed several stage productions – indeed she’s co-artistic director of the Sydney Theater Company, alongside her husband, playwright Andrew Upton – and now she’s turning her directing skill to cinema, as Deadline reports she’s set to helms an adaptation of Herman Koch’s novel The Dinner. Oren Moverman (The Messenger, Rampart) is writing the adapted screenplay.

The novel’s official description says, ‘It’s a summer’s evening in Amsterdam, and two couples meet at a fashionable restaurant for dinner. Between mouthfuls of food and over the polite scrapings of cutlery, the conversation remains a gentle hum of polite discourse — the banality of work, the triviality of the holidays. But behind the empty words, terrible things need to be said, and with every forced smile and every new course, the knives are being sharpened.

‘Each couple has a fifteen-year-old son. The two boys are united by their accountability for a single horrific act; an act that has triggered a police investigation and shattered the comfortable, insulated worlds of their families. As the dinner reaches its culinary climax, the conversation finally touches on their children. As civility and friendship disintegrate, each couple show just how far they are prepared to go to protect those they love.’

It sounds rather small but intense. She may also star in the movie, but hasn’t decided on that yet.

Adam Sandler May Be The Cobbler For Director Tom McCarthy

September 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Adam-SandlerAdam Sandler is known for being a funny man, and while he’s dabbled of sort-of dramas, such as Punch Drunk Love, he’s mainly stuck with comedies. Now he’s in talks to make a fantasy drama for director Tom McCarthy, called The Cobbler, called THR.

Not much is known about the film, other than it’s set in the modern day and follows ‘a shoe man who has the ability to metaphysically step into the lives of the people whose shoes he repairs.’

McCarthy is best known for The Station Agent and The Visitor, and will start filming The Cobbler very soon, as Sandler wants to fit it in before moving on to Jason Reitman’s Men Women & Children (another less overtly comic venture for the actor).
